Breaking Daytime’s Hourglass Ceiling

-------

What with all those fussy stays and complicated seams—not to mention the fact that they’ve historically required a strong-armed servant and a fainting couch, to boot—décolleté-enhancing corsets have been an after-dark affair. But for Resort, designers are showing the shapers in a comparatively casual context—seems that sometimes our days require more than just a caffeine boost. Joseph Altuzarra and Burberry Prorsum‘s Christopher Bailey layered lingerie-inspired, strapless bustiers over a relaxed button-up and T-shirt, respectively, while Australian up-and-comer Dion Lee nixed the wiring but stuck with the molded bust detail on a sheer blouse. Christine Centenera was spotted wearing it during Sydney fashion week last month.

On Our Radar: Mitchel Primrose

-------

Crocodile was everywhere on the Fall runways. No great surprise, then, to find that the forward-thinking types attending Sydney fashion week are early adopters; Tommy Ton spotted Christine Centenera, for example, wearing a croc choker.

It reminded me of several similar pieces from the latest Mitchel Primrose accessory collection. The Los Angeles-based designer launched his line in 2010, but it was only during Spring 2012, when he introduced exotic skins, that the collection ($163 to $995) really took off. The exotic-skin cuffs and chokers with¬†24 karat gold plated brass¬†all caught my eye, especially in alligator. They’ll be at Code C in Sunset Plaza, Calif., this fall.

Gingham Goes Gray

-------

I’ve been crazy for gingham lately, and I’m not alone. Take Isaac Mizrahi. As he told us at his Resort presentation, gingham “is like a solid with a lot of personality.” The usual country red and royal blue ginghams have their place, but they don’t feel as fresh to me as the soft, floaty grays (and their near cousins, washed-out blacks and even watery blues) that have been cropping up everywhere, from street-style blogs to runways. There’s something so much more ethereal about the silvery tones, almost neutral; they’ll transition seamlessly from summer sun to the fall wardrobe. I love how Harper’s Bazaar Australia’s Christine Centenera pairs her gray gingham skirt with nude colors, or how the models Tommy Ton captures throw it on over whatever they’re wearing (pictured). Karl showed some lovely gingham looks at Chanel’s big Resort bash in Saint-Tropez, too, and Eva Mendes is a fan—she wore Dior’s version to the premiere of her movie The Other Guys in Cancún.
