Eco-Fashion Challenge: Accepted

Amber VallettaOn the one-year anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, it’s only appropriate that the Council of Fashion Designers of America should turn its attention to the environment. At a New York luncheon yesterday, the CFDA and Lexus announced the winners of the Eco-Fashion Challenge—an annual event that rewards designers for their environmentally responsible fashion. “It’s only the tip of the iceberg,” said Amber Valletta, who, wearing a Daniel Silverstein dress cut from zero waste, predicted that there will be a major shift in eco-friendly design in another five years. “It’s necessary, responsible, and economical. Luxury is about being thoughtful and sustainable from the beginning.”

Guests including Coco Rocha, Steven Sebring, Maria Cornejo, and Steven Kolb filed into ABC Kitchen for the affair. Over shared plates of locally sourced crab toast and braised mushroom, they applauded top winner Natalie “Alabama” Chanin for her organic, handcrafted wares. “Hand embroidery is very engrained in rural communities in America,” Chanin said. She pointed to the hand-sewn skirt from her namesake label that she was wearing, explaining how she sources the organic cotton from Texas, then has it processed and dyed in North Carolina before it’s sewn by Alabama artisans.

The selection committee, which included Valletta, fashion consultant Julie Gilhart, and CFDA’s Lisa Smilor, among others, also gave awards to Mark Davis for his jewelry, and SVILU’s Britt Cosgrove and Marina Polo for their environmentally sound, understated womenswear.

Everyone knows their Marcs from their Calvins. But as fashion month kicks into gear, we’ll be spotlighting the up-and-coming designers and indie brands whose names you’ll want to remember.

Need to Know: Hot off the celebration of Dannijo’s fifth anniversary, the designing sister duo took Spring ’14 to the dark side with their aptly titled collection Noir, which they presented at Industria Studios in the West Village last night. The range, which models wore while lounging around a midcentury-style movie set, is a departure from the label’s consistently cheerful, colorful baubles. And as the name reflects, it’s an homage to the women of black-and-white film noir. Railroad-track chokers, pendants, and signature Dannijo cuffs featured contrasting shades of black and white muted stones, with pops of teal and pink. On hand to fete the line were such Dannijo supporters as Annabelle Dexter-Jones, Rashida Jones, Samantha Ronson, and a bevy of models straight off the runway, including Hilary Rhoda and Coco Rocha.

She Says: “We’ve always worked off this concept of duality,” said Danielle Snyder. “This woman is elegant yet bold, romantic yet dangerous. It’s black contrasting with a pop of spring.”

Steven Sebring, Now in 4-D

“I’ve been keeping it very secret,” explained fashion photographer and filmmaker Steven Sebring of his latest project, Revolution, which debuted at New York’s 69th Regiment Armory last night. “Just testing the Rig and seeing what it can do—there isn’t anything else like it.” The “Rig” is Sebring’s name for the new massive “geodome” he created—a silver sphere lined with a hundred cameras on wheels. It took three years of personally funded development to complete the apparatus, which is designed to capture the so-called fourth dimension (or the “truly true,” as the artist defines it), and record its subjects’ every move—from every angle—as it spins.

 

Model Coco Rocha is the star of Sebring’s vision (although longtime friend and onetime subject Patti Smith, as well as a tai-chi master from his building, also make appearances), and is shown dancing, leaping, and shifting in a series of videos, photographs, and sculptural works. “This is the first art exhibition I’ve ever been a part of,” offered Rocha. “I put my Irish dancing shoes on and came into Steven’s studio again and again.
