Destination Summer: 10 Models Take Us on Vacation

-------

Looking to soak up the last few rays of summer sun (fashion month is only a few weeks away), models swapped their stilettos for sandals as they flocked to sand and sea to unwind—and luckily for us, they Instagrammed every moment along the way. Sporting a scuba mask, Josephine Skriver cozied up with a sea turtle, while Cora Emmanuel snapped a selfie from the clear aqua waves of her native Martinique. Anja Rubik chilled out #onaboat, inspiring a case of serious desk-side envy. Check out 10 of our favorite models’ vacation snapshots from the week, below.

Seven Fresh Faces From the Elite Model Look Boot Camp

-------

Mary, Ross, and Ruth

For thirty years running, the Elite Model Look competition has given aspiring mannequins a chance to break into the industry. Past participants who beat out hundreds of thousands of beautiful people from more than sixty countries and went on to make it big include Gisele Bündchen, Isabeli Fontana, Constance Jablonski, Sigrid Agren, Dorothea Barth Jorgensen, Fei Fei Sun, and Cora Emmanuel, to name a few. After narrowing down this year’s U.K.-based contestants to eleven girls and eleven boys, the mega modeling agency’s London branch invited the finalists to attend a four-day boot camp, during which they received catwalk and posing training, confidence coaching, nutrition and fitness advice, styling tips, and—most important—met the bookers. Style.com asked Elite Model Look Process’s Amelia Trevette (formerly the head of image and special bookings for Elite London), who was judging and mentoring the fresh faces throughout the week, to call out her seven favorites. Learn all about the top up-and-comers and this year’s U.K. winners—May and Ruth Bell, and Ross Trevillion (above)—who will go on to compete in the international finals this November, below.

May and Ruth Bell (competing together):
“May and Ruth, our ethereal twins from Dover, are like porcelain dolls: flawless skin, ash-blond hair, and delicate features. They look almost otherworldly and are captivating both on the catwalk and in front of the camera.”

Ross Trevillion:
“Ross has an amazing look that is diverse enough to be commercial or editorial. At only sixteen, he has a maturity and presence that not a lot of his peers possess.” Continue Reading “Seven Fresh Faces From the Elite Model Look Boot Camp” »

Mega Watts

-------

Photographer Ben Watts (pictured, left) knows how to throw a party—and last night was no exception. Despite the threat of thunderstorms, a line of guests snaked around the block from Milk Gallery for his latest project, the Ben Watts’ Mix Tape exhibit co-hosted by HTC and MADE Fashion Week. The exhibition, which features Watts’ signature sun-drenched shots of Montauk surfers and beach-bound models, drew a packed audience including sister Naomi Watts (pictured), Liev Schreiber, Alessandra Ambrosio (pictured, below), DJ Chelsea Leyland, and Emilie de Ravin. “Today it’s all about instant gratification,” said Watts, who created the techno-hued collages using his phone and his new “WattsUpPhoto” app, which launched last week. “I used to use Polaroids, but we’re living in a digital world—I like to share what I do with as many people as possible.” When partygoers started snapping their own pics of the work, Watts quipped, “When I see people using their phones creatively, it makes me smile.”

Among the crowd favorites? Surfboards flaunting life-size shots of barely-clad beauties including Behati Prinsloo, Chanel Iman, and Dree Hemingway (pictured, below)—the latter of whom revealed her personal mantra for fashion week. “The less serious you are about it, the better,” she demurred. “Fashion is all about having fun.” To that end, around 10 p.m., Hemingway and her boyfriend, The Fat Radish’s Phil Winser, decamped to the Standard Hotel for the celebratory dinner, where André Balazs, Sean Avery, Andy Cohen, Constance Jablonski, and Waris Ahluwalia fêted the photographer.

As for Watts’ sister Naomi, who has been filming in London and flew in for the occasion, runway shows were far from her mind. “I had no idea it was fashion week,” admitted the Diana star to Style.com. Has playing the style-savvy Princess of Wales crept into the Aussie actress’ personal wardrobe? “The double-breasted, shoulder-padded suit has been featuring heavily in my life, but it’s really not my thing. I don’t think I’ll be bringing that one back.”

Supermodels MATE For Life, And More Of The Day’s Top Stories

-------

Top models Karlie Kloss, Lily Donaldson, Constance Jablonski, Isabeli Fontana, Izabel Goulart, and Edita Vilkeviciute were among the guests who flocked to Peru to celebrate the opening of Mario Testino’s Asociación Mario Testino—a.k.a. MATE—a non-profit organization promoting Peruvian art. While Testino’s work will be on permanent display, an inaugural exhibition will open to the public on July 17. [MATE]

When supermodel Doutzen Kroes saw the recent cover of Vogue China, she was surprised at what she saw. The magazine had photoshopped her image so that she looked as though she only had one leg. “I think photoshopping is OK until something like that happens,” she said. “You don’t want to lose one of your limbs.” Agreed. Raf Simons’ Couture debut at Christian Dior had everybody talking. The floral arrangements were just as head-turning as the clothes. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the million-flower setup of peonies, goldenrod, dahlias, and more, which were cut and arranged to decorate five salons. [Telegraph]

The men of Brazil are in for a treat. Gucci is opening a men’s store in São Paulo on July 21. The 3,600-square-foot shop will be Gucci’s sixth men’s-only outpost and will include a full range of menswear, accessories, and luggage, as well as a made-to-measure tailoring program. [WWD]

Taylor Swift just gave Lady Gaga a run for her money—literally. The country pop singer has taken reign as the highest-earning star under 30 years old, taking in an impressive $57 million. Gaga’s earnings dropped from $90 million to $52 million (still not too shabby), landing her the fourth spot on the list, along with Adele, Rihanna, Katy Perry, and Kristen Stewart. [Vogue U.K.]

Fontana On Her Faith: “Rock ‘n’ Roll Meets Sophia Loren”

-------

“I feel like a grandmother of the models right now because they are all so young,” 28-year-old model Isabeli Fontana (pictured) told Style.com last night. “I am not that young anymore and I have two kids, and I want to spread wings and try something new.”

Not to worry, the Pirelli calendar girl is not calling it quits on modeling just yet, but last night it was one of her new endeavors, a capsule collection she designed for French brand Faith Connexion (the label collaborated with Annabelle Dexter-Jones back in February), that she was celebrating at Cipriani Downtown. Of the collection, due out in November, the Brazilian stunner (who has been a muse to the label for several years) told Style.com, “I love rock ‘n’ roll style, but cool, not too punk. So, I mixed a little of my style with Sophia Loren and the result is a collection of subtle, sensual pieces in beachy colors.” She added, “It’s summer, so it can’t be too much rock ‘n’ roll, but I still had to put some leather in there.” (As a testament to her leather love, she was wearing ample doses of it last night.) It’s not, however, her first turn as a designer. “I have done something for the Brazilian label C&A. I also did a kids’ collection in Brazil because there aren’t enough cool clothes for kids (I don’t like cutesy stuff), and my fiancé has a charity and he wants me to be an ambassador for that—I am doing T-shirts to help the charity and a sexy little bikini line,” she said, in between greeting the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Constance Jablonski, and Mario Testino.

For those out of the loop, her fiancé is Rohan Marley (son of the late reggae legend Bob Marley), who was standing nearby. Of the wedding, which is taking place in the birthplace of the Rastafarian movement (Ethiopia), she said, “He wants to get married there—it’s a way of life, it’s about taking care of your body, your soul, your experience.” More importantly, of her dress, she revealed, “I talked to Dolce about it already and they are going to do my dress, inspired by Sophia Loren, of course.”
