With his idolatry of all things rock ‘n’ roll, Hedi Slimane has lensed the likes of Marilyn Manson, Courtney Love, and Kim Gordon for the Saint Laurent Music Project. But for the latest addition to Slimane’s moody, ongoing photo portfolio, he’s tapped Marianne Faithfull, singer, actress, and Mick Jagger’s former better half. At 67 years old, Faithfull is still plenty chic and doe-eyed, with her signature blunt fringe. We can only speculate as to what other Stones paramour Hedi might draft next: Bianca, Jerry, or Anita?
If the Super Bowl XLVIII halftime show didn’t solidify Saint Laurent’s place as the official fashion house of the music biz, we don’t know what will. Creative director Hedi Slimane has long dressed (and been pals with) mega pop and rock stars. If you’ll remember, Courtney Love, Marilyn Manson, Beck, and Sky Ferreira have all starred in campaigns for the brand. The Kills’ Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart are Saint Laurent front-row fixtures come fashion week, and Slimane has crafted custom onstage outfits for the likes of Daft Punk and Keith Richards. The label’s latest stint in the spotlight came yesterday evening, when Bruno Mars and his band wore custom metallic Saint Laurent jackets, skinny ties, and black trousers during their performance. Looks like the Grammy Award-winning pop prince has officially been inducted into the SL club of cool.
“I am an interiors geek—I have been slightly obsessed with homes since childhood, and that’s why this project just came naturally to me,” said creative director and now author Rob Meyers on the eve of his book launch. The tome in question is Behind Closed Doors, which catalogs images of twenty-five creative people’s homes, with a twist: They were all taken by the creatives themselves.
Olivier Theyskens, Nicola Formichetti, Courtney Love, Marc Quinn, and Gary Card are among those who participated in Meyers’ first book, which was five years in the making. “I worked with all these crazy talented people and I thought, Hey, I wonder what their homes look like,” said Meyers, whose résumé includes stints with Arena Homme+, POP, Wallpaper*, World of Interiors, and Nylon. “I gave them all disposable cameras and asked them to take pictures of their fave bits in their homes,” said the author of his subjects. “And amazingly, they came through. The cameras came back fully loaded.”
Jeremy Scott’s incredible eighties post-Memphis furniture pieces (above, top) and surreal Ronald McDonald collection; Martha Stewart’s bank of fridges, jars of spatulas, and bowls of eggs; and Courtney Love’s assortment of wedding cake figurines (above, bottom), which includes a pic of her own wedding topper with Kurt Cobain, are just a few of the images included in Meyers’ book. But he insists that this is not what you think: “It’s not like these people have been papped or violated in any way. These pictures are not at all intrusive because [the participants] took the pictures of their homes themselves, and showed as much or as little as they wanted. This comes from their hearts.”
Priced at $29.95, Behind Closed Doors will be available from Rizzoli in March 2014.
Even those lucky ladies leading the most charmed of lives—filled with cocktail parties and red-carpet events every night of the week—have their dressed-down moments. And now, designers Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig are addressing their glamorous customers’ day-to-day needs with a new contemporary collection, Marchesa Voyage, which they officially launched last night with a celebration on the Gramercy Park Hotel rooftop. “We always wanted Marchesa to be a lifestyle brand,” Chapman told Style.com. Craig added, “For us, Voyage is all about creating clothes for the global-minded woman and the global-minded traveler, whether she’s going somewhere exotic or just venturing to the office.” The designers mingled with a posh crowd, including Courtney Love, Sami Gayle, Michele Hicks, Rachel Roy, and Lorraine Schwartz, all of whom sipped cocktails and checked out select looks from the premiere Fall and Resort ’14 collections. Many of the wares, like the sequined shift Chapman herself was wearing, are arriving in stores such as Saks, Bloomingdale’s, and Neiman Marcus this week (prices will range from $260 to $1,000). Other highlights displayed on mannequins included a cool biker jacket and matching kilt skirt with allover artisanal embroidery, as well as a bohemian pleated silk maxi dress, printed with celestial moons and stars, paired with a tailored tuxedo jacket. Chapman’s jovial studio-exec hubby Harvey Weinstein also made the rounds. “I actually inspired the entire collection,” he joked, adding, “I love seeing Georgina being able to finally do the kinds of clothes she really wears most of the time.”
