We never thought we’d see denim on a Valentino runway. But there it was, paper-thin, deep indigo, and spliced into shirtdresses and a shorts suit. Valentino‘s Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli weren’t the only ones to dress up the forever-practical fabric. Stella McCartney, Celine‘s Phoebe Philo, and Thakoon Panichgul cut it into full trousers, tunics, and tailored vests. For Derek Lam, who was inspired by all things California, denim was a natural, even though his ultra-chic trench is a long way, baby, from Levi Strauss dungarees. Part of the draw is the material’s versatility. “It’s a very honest fabric,” Lam told Style.com. “It stands the test of time in its endurance and functionality.” If you ask us, it just might be one of the hardest-working wardrobe investments you could make come spring.

If you’ve ever bemoaned the gulf between premium denim and Forever 21′s $9.50 jean (yes, you read that right), a trip to your local mall could be in order. The latest in Banana Republic’s efforts to gently reshape its image centers around the New Blues, a well-rounded collection of classically cool—and American-made—denim staples. The brand sent us back to the office with a pair of the $120 sandblasted slouchy skinnies, and after a test drive, we can attest that the roomy-but-still-slim fit is one we’ve only seen on pairs at double the price. Other options for women include a trouser pant, straight leg, boot cut, boyfriend, and an ultimate skinny.

Why: Being pregnant makes it no easy task to find a good pair of pants, or at least a pair that fits, especially if, like me, you refuse to shop at maternity stores. Luckily for us, Vince is launching a small denim collection for Spring, including the perfect pair of dark denim leggings. I can’t wait to wear mine during fashion week and the months ahead.
