Douglas Hannant Heads Uptown

Designer Douglas Hannant was on hand last night at the annual Hale House benefit and silent auction, hosted by Marcia Gay Harden and Law & Order‘s Tamara Tunie, where his partner, Frederick Anderson (pictured, center, with Gay Harden and Hannant), was among the honorees. The charity will open its second shelter house in Harlem in the coming months, and it’s on track to be arguably the most aesthetically forward yet. “We’re having everyone from Douglas to Nicole Miller to Catherine Malandrino guest-design rooms in the new center,” Anderson said proudly. Hale House has been well supported by the fashion and art community for years; last night alone, donated auction items like a Hunt Slonem painting and a custom Tiffany pendant earned thousands for the cause. Hannant, for his part, considers beautifying Hale House an exciting mission. “If you look at Geoffrey Bradfield’s design of my boutique, it’s classic and modern, and I’m excited to approach this particular interior space in the same way,” the designer said. “After all, shouldn’t a sanctuary be not only safe, but beautiful?”

In Memoriam: The It Bag

Is the It bag’s long, slow death finally over? While also in mourning, Suzy Menkes drives the final nail. Rising from the once highly coveted tote’s fresh grave? The Fantasy Shoe, the Bang-Up Bauble, and even actual clothes.

Model-turned-photog Christina Kruse thinks that all publishing went downhill after the Gutenberg Bible. Oh Christina, you’ve no idea how low it can go.

When the going gets tough, the tough buy lunch for everyone soigné in Palm Beach. Douglas Hannant is taking a road trip to wine, dine, and woo the ladies who lunch.

Don’t hate on awards season overload; embrace. The BAFTAs are next, and, for now, the Brit under-30 set is untarnished, talented, and refreshingly underexposed. For now.

It looks like someone at the Academy put his thinking cap on: “There has been a whisper as well that some celebrity arrivals on Oscar night might not walk the red carpet at all—a twist that would force the curious actually to watch the show itself…” So that’s how you’re going to play it? Game on.

The marmot speaks: six more weeks of winter. Awesome.
