Runway to Red Carpet: The Stars Shine Post-Cannes and Miley Covers Up

-------

Elle FanningFor the past two weeks, all eyes have been glued on the red carpets of the Cannes Film Festival, but the post-Cannes fashion has been packed with well-dressed Hollywood elite, too. On Tuesday, A Million Ways to Die in the West costars Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron kicked off their press tour across the pond with a photo call in London. The duo posed in a pair of LBDs—Seyfried chose a gold-embroidered Pre-Fall ’14 Alexander McQueen mini, while Theron opted for a Stella McCartney frock with exaggerated sleeves.

On Wednesday, the leading ladies of Maleficent looked to their characters for sartorial inspiration. At the film’s world premiere in Hollywood, leading villainess Angelina Jolie stepped out in a black Atelier Versace ball gown, while Elle Fanning looked every part the princess in a lilac beaded Elie Saab Spring ’14 Haute Couture gown.

In a rare move, Miley Cyrus chose a conservative and—dare we say it—sophisticated ball gown for a performance during the World Music Awards in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Her Giambattista Valli Fall ’12 Haute Couture was covered in delicate flowers, another unlikely move for the sassy songstress. If you’re like us and are hoping this is a sign of a new leaf for Miley, don’t count on it—she was back to her scantily clad, tongue-wagging self during a concert the next day.

Runway to Red Carpet: The Celeb Circuit Steps Out for Two Blockbuster Press Tours

-------

Shailene Woodley While much of the Hollywood set tends to enjoy a little break after the awards season finale, the stars of March’s blockbusters have been busy promoting their high-profile flicks. The A-list stars of the biblical epic Noah have been trotting around the world promoting the film, and the picture’s leading ladies have been continually knocking it out of the sartorial ballpark at each premiere. In Madrid, Jennifer Connelly chose a nude Giambattista Valli Spring ’14 Haute Couture frock embroidered with pale leaves and a crystal neckline. Her equally chic costar Emma Watson opted for a black-and-white J. Mendel ensemble, featuring a draped white blouse and tapered black pants fresh off the Fall ’14 runway.

Stateside, the stars of the buzzed-about Divergent have had a busy premiere week of their own. Shailene Woodley, the film’s heroine and a rapidly rising star, stepped out in a black figure-hugging jumpsuit with a sheer detailed bodice from Elie Saab’s Pre-Fall ’13 lineup for a screening in New York on Thursday. In true Hollywood fashion, a bevy of notables turned up for the film’s world premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday, including Kiernan Shipka, Ellie Goulding, and Zoe Kravitz. Shipka attended the L.A. premiere of Divergent in Valentino’s tulle frock covered with armor-like patchwork from the Spring ’14 runway, while Kravitz turned up in a white off-the-shoulder frock from BFF Alexander Wang’s Spring ’14 Balenciaga collection.

Runway to Red Carpet: Elegant Award Shows and a Dressed-Down Film Fest

-------

Brit MarlingBetween the continued Awards Season craze and the laid-back glam of the Sundance Film Festival, the celebrity set had plenty of red-carpet moments this week. America’s new darling (fashion and otherwise) Lupita Nyong’o and Helen Mirren, who both picked up trophies at Saturday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, strutted their stuff at the Producers Guild Awards the following evening. Nyong’o chose a figure-hugging Stella McCartney dress with an asymmetrical shoulder, while Mirren opted for a long-sleeved silver Fall ’13 Elie Saab gown embroidered with crystals. The ladies were joined on Sunday’s red carpet by Nyong’o's 12 Years a Slave castmate Sarah Paulson, who donned a sequined Marc Jacobs frock with floral embellishments from the designer’s memorable Spring ’14 runway.

While many celebrities opt for the casual sweater-and-jeans look during the chilly Sundance Film Festival, actresses Elizabeth Banks and Brit Marling’s red-carpet appearances struck the perfect balance between comfort and glamour. Banks paired a black-and-white grid-patterned Spring ’14 Ralph Lauren dress with black knee-high boots for an event on Tuesday, and Marling chose a black Proenza Schouler pantsuit with chalk-white details from the brand’s Spring ’14 lineup at the premiere of I Origins on Saturday. Marling continued to be a red-carpet highlight throughout the week, stepping out in Christopher Kane and Mulberry at another pair of events. No doubt, this duo is upping the festival’s sartorial game.

-------

Olivia, Amy, and Zooey

As we’re sure you’re aware, last night, Hollywood’s elite walked the red carpet for the Golden Globes. But it wasn’t just a big evening for the actors and directors who took home gilded statuettes—it’s an important affair for fashion folk, too. Mega stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris were not just on the scene, but also behind the scenes dressing co-host Amy Poehler (who looked svelte in Stella McCartney), Elisabeth Moss (who took home a best actress award while wearing J. Mendel), Olivia Wilde (who was radiant in Gucci Première), Zooey Deschanel (who opted for an elegant Oscar de la Renta gown), Robin Wright (who shimmered in Reem Acra while accepting her best actress honor), Hailee Steinfeld (who partied in Andrew Gn), and more. Here, Welch shares the pair’s Golden Globes diary and gives Style.com a firsthand account of what it’s like to dress leading ladies for one of Hollywood’s most glam-packed events.

For Amy’s opening look, we went for Neil Lane vintage gold. Our mantra was, “What would Carol Burnett do?” Sometimes, more is more and it’s always better to have fun! Continue Reading “Golden Girls: Stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris Take Us Inside the Glamorous Globes” »

Rooney MaraWith the SAG Award and Golden Globe nominations announced this week, award season is nigh. Between galas, film festivals, and worldwide promo tours for their nominated films, this year’s well-dressed contenders have been pulling out all the sartorial stops.
