Rauwolf Of The Future, Right Now
Carry a clutch by New York-based designer Kristine Johannes and people are sure to ask you about it (and, most likely, they will attempt to use it as a mirror to check their lipstick, too). Since she unveiled her line of Plexiglas and mirrored bags (called Rauwolf) for Spring ’12, Johannes’ designs have landed in the hands of starlets like Anna Kendrick and Elizabeth Banks and on the pages of Vogue Japan and Vogue Latino America, among others. For Spring ’13, she’s lightened things up a bit, offering some of her now signature styles in saturated colors and more muted metallics. She’s also added smaller styles for more petite women. “The aesthetics were inspired by part doyenne of high society mixed with a touch of alien and a dash of Ziggy Stardust—always with an eye to the future,” she tells Style.com. “For shape inspiration, I really focused on gemstones and outer space.” Here, a look at one of our favorite pieces from her latest collection.
Lucky In L.A.
“Bloggers have changed the fashion industry.” So opined Lucky editor in chief Brandon Holley, and that’s the guiding wisdom behind her magazine’s FABB Fashion and Beauty Blogger conference. The third annual conference took place yesterday, but for the first time, Holley chose L.A. as its home. “There’s a really neat intersection between fashion, bloggers, and celebrity; L.A. is kind of the center,” she explained. Proving her point were the the panelists set to speak: L.A.-based bloggers including WhoWhatWear’s Katherine Power and HelloGiggles’ Sophia Rossi; online-savvy celebrities like Jessica Alba (pictured), Cat Deeley, and Elizabeth Banks; fashion businesspeople like J Brand’s Jeff Rudes; and Hollywood insiders such as Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant and Easy A screenwriter Will Gluck.
How did the day’s speakers see the change that blogs have wrought? Celebrity stylist-turned-A.L.C. designer Andrea Lieberman suggested that they’ve brought the stars down-to-earth—and in so doing, made them relatable to millions. Casual shots of celebrities on their off-hours, tirelessly chronicled by celeb-focused blogs, have “as much of an impact on fashion and style and image as the red carpet does.”

The Choo-sen Ones

Tamara Mellon brought some extra buzz to Cecconi’s, the new Italian restaurant on Melrose at the old Morton’s address. Her pre-Oscars luncheon on Thursday, co-hosted by fellow Brit Diana Jenkins, had the place packed. “A lot of ladies! Tamara attracts the best,” Elizabeth Banks concluded after a quick scan of the room. Debra Messing, Jamie Tisch and other done-up Angelenos chit-chatted over Champagne and lobster salad; with so many girls in the room, the burden of masculinity was left almost entirely to bear by Valentino and Elton John. During dessert, Mellon, who has temporarily set up shop at the Peninsula, mused over which proven Jimmy Choo fans might swing by for some Oscars footwear (Charlize Theron, Hilary Swank, newcomer Freida Pinto?). Mainly, though, the London-based entrepreneur was taking a break from her busy schedule to catch up with LA friends. “I love to do things that are intimate, where I can see everybody,” she explained. The paparazzi swarming outside Cecconi’s by the end of the three-hour get-together couldn’t have agreed more.
