Postcard From Hong Kong: 48 Hours With Rare Vintage’s Juliana Cairone

Rare Vintage owner Juliana Cairone (pictured) recently jetted off to Hong Kong to curate an exhibition for Lane Crawford’s flagship. Below, she reports on her first visit to the city, the best head massage worldwide, and the pains of wearing a cool few million on your neck.

48 hours in Hong Kong, 32 hours on the plane. But business class on Cathay Pacific eases that pain and gives me a good chance to catch up on films, like The Informant! with Matt Damon (loved his Michael Moore-sounding voiceover) and An Education, which is brilliant! So nice to see a film where the female lead is smart, funny, and engaging. There are too few smart roles for women in Hollywood. And now Carey Mulligan is a multi-nominee!

I wake up in the morning at the “old” Mandarin Oriental Hotel, and I rush for a shampoo and blow-dry at the salon. I could have stayed there all day! It is the best head massage I have ever had, and between that and the jet-lag, I am so relaxed I can’t think how I’m supposed to focus on my interviews at Lane Crawford for The New Vintage exhibit I am curating at their flagship store. But when I arrive, I am really happy to see couture pieces from Rare Vintage mixed with jewelry from Vera Wang, Erickson Beamon, Miriam Haskell, and a new favorite, Shourouk. It made the couture pieces from the 1950′s through the 1990′s look edgy and modern, which is exactly my philosophy on how vintage should be worn.

And what do I learn today at Lane Crawford? That I could never be a celebrity. My lips actually quiver by the end of the day after so many interviews with the Hong Kong press and posing for photographers. I have a newfound respect for and awe of actors on press junkets.

French Kissing With Stacey Bendet

Stacey Bendet’s been crushing on some girls lately, namely the French pop band the Plasticines. So to get it out in the open, she booked them to play at the Alice + Olivia presentation-slash-party at the Mick Rock photo gallery by the High Line last night. Since the brand’s inception, its customer has always been a party girl, but now there are even more reasons to celebrate. First there’s Bendet’s collaboration with Erickson Beamon jewelry, then there’s her new hair accessories line, and finally, of course, her new limited-edition, high-end collection. Bendet likes to work around a theme: This time it was springtime in Paris. Multiple tableaux of models—in ethereal dresses and shrunken leather jackets, and T-shirts and sexy minis—flanked one side of the gallery. Clad head-to-toe in Bendet’s spring collection, It girls Ashley Greene, AnnaLynne McCord, and Heather Graham checked out the wares while the Plasticines sang their hit “Bitch.” Despite the lyrics, it seemed like everybody there had nothing but love for each other.

Checking In With Ikram Goldman, Michelle Obama’s Go-To Gal

Ikram Goldman, the Chicago boutique owner whose role as Michelle Obama’s wardrobe consultant has made her one of the fashion world’s biggest influencers, is an elusive figure. She doesn’t trot around the fashion circuit and rarely give interviews. But she’s in New York until Sunday, buying pre-collections, and opened up to us a bit at last night’s Prospect Park Summer Soiree (click here for a slideshow from the party). “I always love what I see in pre-collections because I think they have a much longer shelf life, and it’s good for us,” Goldman said. It’s not the same as seeing shows, she added. “For me right now, this is pure business. It’s more about buying things that I know are going to be fillers for every piece, whether it’s from Gaultier or Moschino or Viktor & Rolf or McQueen.” Goldman was mum on how her itinerary this week might affect what her number-one client wears in coming months, but she did say what she liked: “I thought McQueen had beautiful dresses this season. In terms of really pretty finds and jewelry and things like that, I’d have to say Erickson Beamon did some really fun pieces. And I always love the Prova collections from Irini Arakas.” And MObama favorites Jason Wu (“we keep in touch all the time”) and Thakoon (“probably my favorite collection that I’ve seen so far, in terms of ready-to-wear, for pre-collections”) are both still very high on her list. She’d also spotted a trend. “I’m seeing a lot of biker jackets. Whether they’re laser-cut or leather or knit, a lot of biker jackets,” Goldman noted. The obvious question: What are the chances we’ll see the First Lady in one? “No comment.”
