Duran Duran, Super-Sized
The eighties gave us supermodels, and they gave us Duran Duran. Fast-forward to 2011 and they’re all making headlines again. The band recruited five über-supers for a video for “Girl Panic!,” its new single off the album All You Need Is Now, released earlier this year. In the nine-minute clip directed by Jonas Akerlund (the Grammy Award winner behind Lady Gaga’s “Telephone”) and made in collaboration with Swarovski Elements, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Eva Herzigova, Helena Christensen, and Yasmin LeBon play Simon, John, Nick, Roger, and an “anonymous guitarist,” while the real members of the group appear as bellhops, waiters, chauffeurs, and paparazzi. Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana even make cameos as Harper’s Bazaar U.K.‘s guest editors during a photo shoot scene, images from which can be found in that magazine’s actual December issue. “It’s all daft stuff, but it’s fantastic daft stuff,” says John Taylor in a “making of” video that Style.com is debuting exclusively here. Carine Roitfeld: Agent Provocateuse
Today we published a preview of Carine Roitfeld’s new book Irreverent, which Rizzoli is releasing in mid-October. Roitfeld watchers will recall many of the images we’ve posted. There’s Carine as arch provocateur, staging a portrait of the luminous Eniko Mihalik with an octogenarian’s hands, and another with a nude model sipping from an enormous bottle of Chanel eau de cologne. And then there’s Carine in career-maker mode. We’ve included her first shoots with Crystal Renn and Lara Stone, both of whom owe no small part of their fame to the visionary editor in chief of Paris Vogue. “I love how she’s almost naked here,” Roitfeld says of the Terry Richardson-lensed shot of Stone. “It seems like a good beginning.”
To my eyes, the most striking shots depict Roitfeld combining both instincts. I’m talking about Eva Herzigova playing a butcher for a Mario Testino portfolio in The Face circa 1997. Nothing says man-eater quite like a gorgeous blonde with a bloody pile of gnawed bones in her lap. Roitfeld has included a thank-you note from the model alongside the spread. “The ‘Butcher’ story we did gave me the chance to be seen and understood as a model with a much vaster potential…” writes Herzigova. “I had this pin-up label attached to me for so long that it seemed impossible to shed it. Thanks to your and Mario’s imagination you helped me to be liberated from this.”

Talk Supe At Hakaan’s After-Party
When Naomi Campbell swept into Le Montana last night for ANDAM winner Hakaan Yildirim’s after-party, she pursed her lips and gently shook her head at an intrepid reporter’s tape recorder in a gesture at least as old as Garbo. But no matter. The stonewalling supermodel’s presence itself spoke volumes. It may not have been the party of the night—an honor reserved for a veteran, not a relative rookie—but it was a required stop for the girls who made the show a hit both on the runway and in the front row. That includes Eva Herzigova, Anja Rubik, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Natalia Vodianova (who came by early with Jefferson Hack), as well as fashion folk like Giambattista Valli, Charlotte Dellal, and Hidetoshi Nakata. Also taking in the dark, smoky scene were visiting New Yorkers Thakoon Panichgul, Lorenzo Martone, and Suno duo Max Osterweis and Erin Beatty.
Campbell commandeered the best downstairs booth with a perfect view of the dance floor, where she sat with boyfriend, Vladislav Doronin, and Bar Refaeli, the latter keeping an eye on beau Leonardo DiCaprio. (Though Leo, with baseball cap pulled low, wasn’t so much dancing as swaying with the shoulder-to-shoulder crowd.) For his part, Yildirim (above, with Arizona Muse and Lindsey Wixson) pronounced himself “happy but just very tired.” That wasn’t entirely the case with the line’s creative director (and photographer), Mert Alas, who played the host. “I liked it, but I’m never happy,” said Alas, half in jest. “You know when you have a perfect vision of how it should be? So I hate it all.”
If Only All Ambassadors Dressed Like This
Browns has been an English institution for four decades now. Mrs. B isn’t one to let an occasion like that go under-celebrated. For the store’s 40th anniversary, the pioneering retailer—who brought Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, and Sonia Rykiel to England and was an early booster of Hussein Chalayan and Marios Schwab—put together an exhibition, opening tomorrow, of 40 Browns “ambassadors” in finery pulled from its archives.
