Fontana On Her Faith: “Rock ‘n’ Roll Meets Sophia Loren”

“I feel like a grandmother of the models right now because they are all so young,” 28-year-old model Isabeli Fontana (pictured) told last night. “I am not that young anymore and I have two kids, and I want to spread wings and try something new.”

Not to worry, the Pirelli calendar girl is not calling it quits on modeling just yet, but last night it was one of her new endeavors, a capsule collection she designed for French brand Faith Connexion (the label collaborated with Annabelle Dexter-Jones back in February), that she was celebrating at Cipriani Downtown. Of the collection, due out in November, the Brazilian stunner (who has been a muse to the label for several years) told, “I love rock ‘n’ roll style, but cool, not too punk. So, I mixed a little of my style with Sophia Loren and the result is a collection of subtle, sensual pieces in beachy colors.” She added, “It’s summer, so it can’t be too much rock ‘n’ roll, but I still had to put some leather in there.” (As a testament to her leather love, she was wearing ample doses of it last night.) It’s not, however, her first turn as a designer. “I have done something for the Brazilian label C&A. I also did a kids’ collection in Brazil because there aren’t enough cool clothes for kids (I don’t like cutesy stuff), and my fiancé has a charity and he wants me to be an ambassador for that—I am doing T-shirts to help the charity and a sexy little bikini line,” she said, in between greeting the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Constance Jablonski, and Mario Testino.

For those out of the loop, her fiancé is Rohan Marley (son of the late reggae legend Bob Marley), who was standing nearby. Of the wedding, which is taking place in the birthplace of the Rastafarian movement (Ethiopia), she said, “He wants to get married there—it’s a way of life, it’s about taking care of your body, your soul, your experience.” More importantly, of her dress, she revealed, “I talked to Dolce about it already and they are going to do my dress, inspired by Sophia Loren, of course.”

All About Annabelle

For her debut capsule collection for French brand Faith Connexion, Annabelle Dexter-Jones didn’t have to look far for inspiration—she dug through old family photos of she and her siblings wearing their private school uniforms. “They are all clothes that you didn’t want to wear as a child, but you want to wear now,” she explains of the collection. The 25 pieces, including bow headbands, straight-leg jeans, a classic little black dress, and a red raincoat, are complete with a special “Annabelle” label designed by Dexter-Jones’ other half, André Saraiva. Here, a sneak peak at the actress in the design studio putting it all together.

The Faith Connexion

Of the Faith Connexion lexicon, brand ambassador Maria Buccellati says, “Chic, glamorous girls with a strong sense of rock ‘n’ roll.’” That’s a fitting description of the brand’s loyal shoppers, a group that includes Jennifer Lopez, Géraldine Saglio, and Karolina Kurkova. The “Left Bank cool” line from Paris brings Balmain to mind, with its glam-rock metallic gold pants and leather jacket offerings in the Spring 2012 collection. There’s a reason for the similarities to the storied French house; the Faith Connexion design team is made up of designers hailing from Balmain, along with Lacroix and Azzaro.

For Spring, “the collection follows the Faith girl on a Paris-to-L.A. route,” Buccellati says. The result is reflective of their “boyish versus feminine” aesthetic that is both nonchalant and glamorous. There are cotton T-shirts and light, distressed denim shirts that look fit for a stroll down Melrose, and cigarette pants and button-up blouses that make the French connection clear. As for the gold sequined pieces, “glammed-up clubber looks,” as Buccellati calls them, those are fit for nightclubs on all continents.
