Chelsea Leyland Raves On

Waris Ahluwalia and Chelsea LeylandTwenty-five is a pretty big birthday, and Chelsea Leyland had no doubts that the quarter-century mark was something she wanted to celebrate. Last night, the deejay teamed up with DKNY Jeans to throw a bash, and invited friends such as Hannah Bronfman, Dree Hemingway, Waris Ahluwalia, and Fiona Byrne to fete her special day. The girl-about-town donned a custom second-skin catsuit for the affair and transformed Studio 450 into a nineties-style rave, complete with lasers and smoke. “During my downtime, I like to go to Brooklyn raves,” she told Style.com. “So tonight I’m trying to create a more manicured, chic Brooklyn rave for Manhattan.”

And what’s a rave without great beats? Leyland (who, of course, knows a little something about music) handpicked deejays Mess Kid and Brenmar to spin, and asked her friend Kilo Kish to perform. As the night began to wind down, the singer led the crowd into “Happy Birthday,” and the rave transitioned into the expected hugs, cheers, and well-wishing. It seemed that the evening was a success—but wait a minute: Isn’t it a faux pas for a lady to reveal her age? Leyland shrugged off the old adage. “It’s not like I’m turning thirty-five,” she laughed. Although we have no doubt she’ll throw an equally impressive party for that milestone, too.

Summer Recess With The Cools

Picture a Web site that is eBay meets Pinterest with a dash of Instagram thrown in for good measure, and you’ve got a pretty good idea of what The Cools (www.thecools.com) is. It’s a personalized online bazaar curated by likeminded tastemakers, no weeding through pages of junk necessary. “I get e-mailed so much stuff and one thing I happened to click on was this site. I saw like three things I hadn’t seen before that I wanted and one of the three that I could afford, so I thought ‘cool,’ ” The Hole gallery founder Kathy Grayson told Style.com last night at The Cools’ first Jamboree event, which brought the online experience to life. For the occasion, site founder Olivier van Themsche took over the sprawling 15,000-square-foot Old School in Nolita and gave local designers and restaurants, including Grayson, Erin Fetherston, Bing Bang’s Anna Sheffield, What Goes Around Comes Around, Selima, and Miss Lily’s each a classroom to take over and market their offerings. “The offline events are a key part of The Cools,” van Themsche said. “The nature of creatives is to engage with other creatives—I plan to make the Jamboree recurring and it will evolve into a sort of ‘curated’ cool kids’ flea market, which will pop up in New York and also in Paris, Milan, etc.”

The result was a laissez-faire bash that drew a line of people (including Hanne Gaby Odiele, Waris Ahluwalia, Fiona Byrne, and Scott Lipps) wrapped around the block on Mott Street waiting to get in. At one point, the police even arrived to break up the festivities. Things were indeed getting a bit rowdy in the space Miss Lily’s restaurant turned into a Jamaican dancehall complete with dance lessons, reggaeton beats, and an emcee. Across the hall, skateboarders were tearing up a half pipe set up by aNYthing, and a floor below, The Hole was selling $100 psychedelic drawings and Sheffield was teaching guests to knit friendship bracelets. Grayson’s favorite part was the room devised by indie film director Adam Green (who was dressed kind of like Captain Crunch), which featured large video game props from his feature film The Wrong Ferrari. “I have a soft spot for anything analog versus digital, and I thought the movie was funny,” said Grayson. “Plus, he was dressed cool and I can pretend in my head he is my new boyfriend.” Overall, it was a rollicking success, and van Themsche plans to hold court over similar events on a monthly basis. Erin Fetherston, who displayed sketches of her ethereal dresses, said, “Olivier has created the ultimate hipster social-commerce platform. There is nothing comparable in the social/e-commerce space that provides the taste level, art direction, or community that the The Cools offers.”

Byrne Baby Byrne

The Byrne Notice—a brand-spanking New York lifestyle site—may be monikered after Fiona Byrne (pictured, left), but it’s not another personal branding exercise. “I don’t want to put my diary on there,” says Byrne, the British expat journalist whose last project was Naag.com, which she launched with Agyness Deyn. “It’s for me and my friends and people who are growing up like us, but it’s also authoritative. We say ‘we,’ not ‘me.’ “

Judging by the flock at last night’s Byrne Notice launch, co-hosted by J Brand, it’s a very royal “we” as far as downtown sovereignty goes. The designer posse that turned out to Acme for the fête included Eddie Borgo, Chrissie Miller, Rebecca Minkoff, and Christian Siriano, whose Chelsea lodgings were just featured on the site. “I didn’t mean it to be as fashion-y,” Byrne said as Jenne Lombardo and Opening Ceremony’s Kate Foley passed by, “but it just seems to come to me.” Though good old fashion makes up the bulk of the content, Byrne seeks to make the site a comprehensive guide to the styled life. Of her epicurean philosophy, she said, “If you have a salted caramel anywhere on your menu, I will go there. I like Laboratorio di Gelato, I love Miss Lily’s. But I’ll also go to Starbucks and get one of those caramel iced things—I’m not a Blue Bottle snob.” Swag aspirations tempered with populist good humor? Noticed.

A Big Sister, Maybe, But Never A Nag

The gilded elevator gates that divide the bar from the dining room at the back of the new Lower East Side restaurant Mary Queen of Scots are retractable. It’s a feature the guests at the AllSaints-sponsored launch party for Agyness Deyn’s new fashion site, Naag, discovered at the dinner Aggy threw with editor Fiona Byrne, Coco Rocha, Karen Elson (both pictured, left, with Deyn), Zachary Quinto, and SNL‘s Seth Meyers. Guests invited to the rocking after-party (where, later, Miike Snow singer Andrew Wyatt deejayed and an all-but-incognito Marion Cotillard danced) but not to the dinner peered through the grate, like visitors at a couture safari.

Naag is the brainchild of Deyn and veteran journalist Byrne, who serves as its editor in chief. It covers fashion, food, and culture, with an eye to up-and-coming young talent. “It all started with me and Fiona at a music festival. It was raining and we were in the tent waiting for the music to start. And I was scanning the Internet,” Deyn explains. “We were like, we should do a site that has all the stuff that we think is rad. We want it to be kind of like a big cultural sister.”

And, it goes without saying, a fashionable sister, too. “It’s funny—at my job I managed to get the one position where you have to wear a suit and tie,” says Meyers, SNL‘s head writer who also helms the Weekend Update segments. “I’d like to think that if I was so far out of bounds fashion-wise, Fiona or Aggy would tell me. But now this site saves me the awkwardness of their having to do that to my face.” For the record, he was wearing a plaid shirt and baggy pants. If Big Sister minded, she didn’t let on.
