Runway to Red Carpet: Awards Season Fever

-------

Lupita Nyong'oAwards Season is officially in full swing. Lupita, Amy, Emma, and Cate stole the show at Sunday’s Golden Globes, but plenty of other A-listers had their time in the spotlight on the busy party circuit. On Saturday, Sandra Bullock broke red-carpet convention by pairing a white T-shirt etched with iconic edifices with an emerald pencil skirt from Burberry’s fresh Pre-Fall ’14 offering for the BAFTA Los Angeles 2014 Awards Season Tea Party in Beverly Hills. The same day, Naomi Watts took a turn on the red carpet for the G’Day USA Black Tie Gala in an icy blue silk satin Spring ’14 Marchesa gown.

After the Globes, many stars slipped out of their red-carpet wares and into equally glamorous party frocks for some post-ceremony revelry. InStyle and Warner Bros. cohosted a bash that saw notables like Hailee Steinfeld, Emma Watson, and Miranda Kerr slink down the red carpet in their sartorial best. Diane Kruger, who was absent on the Globe’s red carpet, turned up in a black Pre-Fall ’14 Antonio Berardi gown sprinkled with gold crystals.

Silver-screen newcomers Lupita Nyong’o and Adèle Exarchopoulos each took home trophies at Thursday night’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. And they impressed on the red carpet, too. Nyong’o, who has topped countless Best Dressed lists the last few months, donned a statuesque, custom ivory silk crepe bandeau dress from Calvin Klein Collection (she also wore a printed Mary Katrantzou number to the DuJour magazine party this week, left). Exarchopoulos, meanwhile, chose a sheer Spring ’14 Louis Vuitton stunner spangled with beads and feathers. Tune in Saturday evening as the red-carpet excitement continues with the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Golden Girls: Stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris Take Us Inside the Glamorous Globes

-------

Olivia, Amy, and Zooey

As we’re sure you’re aware, last night, Hollywood’s elite walked the red carpet for the Golden Globes. But it wasn’t just a big evening for the actors and directors who took home gilded statuettes—it’s an important affair for fashion folk, too. Mega stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris were not just on the scene, but also behind the scenes dressing co-host Amy Poehler (who looked svelte in Stella McCartney), Elisabeth Moss (who took home a best actress award while wearing J. Mendel), Olivia Wilde (who was radiant in Gucci Première), Zooey Deschanel (who opted for an elegant Oscar de la Renta gown), Robin Wright (who shimmered in Reem Acra while accepting her best actress honor), Hailee Steinfeld (who partied in Andrew Gn), and more. Here, Welch shares the pair’s Golden Globes diary and gives Style.com a firsthand account of what it’s like to dress leading ladies for one of Hollywood’s most glam-packed events.

For Amy’s opening look, we went for Neil Lane vintage gold. Our mantra was, “What would Carol Burnett do?” Sometimes, more is more and it’s always better to have fun! Continue Reading “Golden Girls: Stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris Take Us Inside the Glamorous Globes” »

Runway to Red Carpet: Stars Step It Up for Awards Season

-------

Sandra BullockWith the Golden Globes only three days away, Awards Season is officially here. And this week, we saw stars aplenty strutting down red carpets at various pre-Globe ceremonies. For instance, Golden Globe Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, nominee Amy Adams stepped out in a black-and-white polka-dot Juan Carlos Obando Spring ’14 halter gown at the Palm Springs International Film Festival Awards gala on Saturday, where she and her American Hustle castmates were honored with the Ensemble Performance Award. Cate Blanchett, who is up for a Best Actress Globe in the Drama category, started the season off swinging by winning the Best Actress honor at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards on Monday. The Blue Jasmine star wore a silver brocade gown with a full high-low skirt and matching jacket from Antonio Berardi’s Pre-Fall ’14 lineup to accept her accolade. On Wednesday, many A-listers, including Gravity leading lady and Golden Globe nom Sandra Bullock, headed to the People’s Choice Awards. Bullock, the night’s big winner, stepped out in a green, white, and navy floral Peter Pilotto Resort ’14 frock, and accepted awards for Favorite Movie Actress, Favorite Comedic Movie Actress, Favorite Dramatic Movie Actress, and Favorite Movie Duo alongside Gravity costar George Clooney.

On Thursday evening, W magazine held a pre-Golden Globes fete in L.A., giving the “Best Performance” nominees a chance to celebrate before the big reveal. Best Supporting Actress nom Lupita Nyong’o attended the event in a black satin-back crepe Proenza Schouler dress from the Resort ’14 collection. Downton Abbey star Michelle Dockery made an appearance to celebrate her show’s nomination, turning up in a multichecked frock from Altuzarra’s fresh Pre-Fall ’14 range. With the nominees continually hitting it out of the sartorial ballpark, we can hardly wait to see what they have in store for the main event this weekend. Any predictions? Tune in Sunday night for our complete coverage of the 71st Annual Golden Globes.

2014′s Golden Globe Nominees Announced

-------

Jennifer Lawrence The 2014 Golden Globe nominees were announced today, and it looks like 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle—two movies that deftly capture two very different moments in American history—are the top contenders. With seven nominations each, the dramatic films are neck-and-neck competitors for Golden Globe (and, most likely, Oscar) glory.

Other notable nods in the Best Motion Picture lineup include blockbuster hits Gravity and Captain Phillips, as well as the Venice Film Festival winner for Best Screenplay, Philomena. Upcoming films Her and The Wolf of Wall Street also made the cut, rounding out a list of dramas and tearjerkers.

And let’s not forget our favorite (and most stylish) leading men and ladies. Cate Blanchett received a Best Actress nod for her role in Woody Allen’s acclaimed Blue Jasmine. (Her character’s collection of Chanel jackets may or may not deserve its own award.) Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for Best Actor for The Wolf of Wall Street, and rising red-carpet star Lupita Nyong’o is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 12 Years a Slave. Jennifer Lawrence’s turn as a sexy housewife in American Hustle also earned her a Best Supporting Actress nomination. Lawrence will likely step out in Dior for the awards show, but we’re really feeling the messy updos and plunging halter dresses she wears in the film.

See the full list of nominees below, and tune into NBC on Sunday, January 12, to see our favorite funny girls Tina Fey and Amy Poehler host the show live.

Red Carpet Ready: Elizabeth Stewart’s Golden Globes Diary

-------

In the days leading up to January 13′s Golden Globes, L.A.-based celebrity superstylist Elizabeth Stewart is giving Style.com an exclusive behind-the-scenes account of what it takes to dress Hollywood’s hottest starlets. This season, she’s working with best actress nominee Jessica Chastain, Les Misérables star Amanda Seyfried, Julia Roberts (who’s presenting), and Cody Horn on their red-carpet looks. Below, Stewart gives us a glimpse into the first few days of the process.

Thursday, January 3

On Thursday, I flew to New York for a day to fit Jessica Chastain for awards shows. I like to do one big fitting at the beginning of the season to get a plan in place. Which, of course, changes a million times, but at least there’s a plan!

Jessica’s schedule is so busy, but when I see her, we get a lot done. This time around, we received several awards-show options, met with a designer to look at sketches, and chose dresses for a few other upcoming events. We found her a dress for her Mama premiere (left), which was a few days later. We also found a Harry Winston collar for Jessica to wear with the dress, and it was brought by a guard! I headed straight to the airport after the fitting.
Tuesday, January 8

This is me and my bestie, Matthias Vriens-McGrath (above). We’re on a fashion editorial shoot that has nothing to do with awards-show season, but it illustrates perfectly how crazy this time of year is for me. My regular schedule stays the same, with awards-season craziness added in!

Wednesday, January 9

Today, I ran around pulling while waiting for Amanda Seyfried’s plane to land. Here is Carlos Souza from Valentino (above) showing me some dresses for Julia Roberts, who is presenting at the Globes. Afterwards, I ran to the fitting.

Here, I’m showing Amanda (above) sketches designers made for her on my laptop.

Still Wednesday! I could send you hundreds of pics of accessories, but this is the real nitty-gritty—my assistant Katie is holding a box of candy that Amanda grabbed as sustenance for our fitting!

And the boxes…my studio is my converted garage, but the boxes the dresses arrive in (from around the world!) spill out all over the house. By now, it’s 8:30 p.m., but we are still not done. I have to prep for fittings with Brit Marling (for Sundance) and Cody Horn (for Globes parties) tomorrow morning, before running off to help Amanda and Jessica get ready for the Critics’ Choice Awards.
