Hanii Y’s new york debut

Hanii Yoon has been designing her eponymous line, Hanii Y, for about five years, but in some ways, the brand is only now making its debut. For starters, the Hanii Y Spring 2009 presentation yesterday marked the first time one of the designer’s collections has been shown in New York, and the timing isn’t coincidental. Yoon recently shuttered her other label—Y & Kei—and is devoting herself full-time to the line she had originally launched as a side project. And more recently yet, she left Korea and moved to New York—a relocation the designer says has helped to invigorate her creatively. “It was always my dream to be a New York designer,” she explains. “Even when I was a student in San Francisco, that was the goal, to come to the city and be a part of the New York fashion scene.” Y & Kei’s buzzy shows gave the designer a foothold in that scene, and fans of that brand will need little encouragement to embrace the re-energized Hanii Y line, which boasts a similarly detail-driven, urbane prettiness. Yoon, for her part, is just happy to be here. “It’s still very new, and I’m excited. A very good change,” she says.
