After a well-received debut last season, L.A.-based ready-to-wear line Haber is back for Spring ’14 with a feminine, art-fueled collection. Twenty-six-year-old designer Heather Goldberg, who worked with Threeasfour and Band of Outsiders before launching her own label, was inspired by artist Richard Tuttle, whose recent residency at The Getty in Los Angeles provided the perfect reference point. For instance, Tuttle’s wire pieces directly informed a single pink line of delicate silk cord embellishing a white dress, while new fabric treatments are the result of a study of Tuttle’s Mei Mei’s Lamp.
Equally compelled by Jean-Michel Basquiat’s modus operandi, Goldberg married her two references in a video about a young artist. “I was connecting the two and looking at the paradox between those very different ways of being and working,” the designer said of the short, in which the model mimics Basquiat’s process while dressed in Haber’s ornate wares. As the model changes into different Spring ’14 looks, they ignite new waves of creativity. “It creates a different mood and inspiration for her to continue working,” Goldberg notes. Indeed, the collection is a fitting homage to Goldberg’s muses. But, filled with shimmering embellishments, pleats, and smoky pastels, Haber’s soft Spring range delivers artistry in its own right, too.
