Cameron Silver’s Journey Through The World Of Chanel

-------

My typical response when receiving an invitation to an out-of-town party is “send a plane.” Amazingly enough, that’s exactly what Chanel did for the opening night of Numéros Privés: A Journey Through the World of Chanel at the Wynn Las Vegas on Friday. The label chartered five planes from New York, six from Los Angeles (I was on a G4), and one from San Francisco, with a fleet of Escalades waiting to pick up the almost 200 VIPs—including Jessica Alba, Diane Kruger, Dree Hemingway, and Anouck Lepère—they invited for the grand affair this weekend.

“Nothing is more glamorous than being inside a Chanel pocketbook,” Rachel Zoe told me while we hung out in the Wynn’s leather-lined room—just one part of the ultimate luxe fun house, a temporary installation celebrating the iconic codes of Chanel. China Chow begged to differ. When I asked her what her favorite was, she asked, “Is that a rhetorical question? The couture room, of course,” she said. It was difficult to pick a personal favorite. Between the rooms with pearl curtains containing bejeweled bags and bijoux, the black lacquer room devoted to the J12, and the children’s room filled with Karl Lagerfeld-designed dolls and Le Petit Coco wallpaper, they were all pretty magnificent.

Alexa Chung deejayed during a Chinese New Year dinner of dim sum (where mostly just Champagne was consumed), and afterward came a killer rockabilly performance by Ireland’s Imelda May, who got Shiva Rose and Tierney Gearon swinging on the dance floor. Dancing wasn’t the main attraction, however. Everyone was focused on the Coco vending machine. Liz Goldwyn tried to get the claw to catch a leather cuff, but like most of us what she ended up with was a lipstick. That’s not nothing, and in that sense everyone seemed to get lucky in Vegas last night. I would feel more lucky, though, if Chanel would send me on a private plane to Paris. Couture starts Monday.
