Like the George Gershwin song goes, “Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” Especially if your workweek is cut short thanks to “Summer Fridays.” The extra hours go a long way in making every weekend seem like a holiday. If you’ve ever tried to read into Mad Men teasers for clues, you know how important the clothes are. In the vague previews that run in between each episode—which have become a kind of inside joke among fans—you can tell more about a character’s future based on what they’re wearing than what they actually say. That’s testament to how great Janie Bryant’s work is. The Emmy-winning costume designer has made the clothes one of the show’s main attractions throughout her five-year tenure, receiving plenty of recognition along the way, including collaborative deals with Banana Republic, QVC, and Maidenform. When she’s not iconically outfitting the cast, Bryant fittingly frequents Palm Springs, a vacation spot outside of Los Angeles renown for its mid-century architecture. Here’s how Bryant is spending her Summer Fridays:
“If I could take off for Summer Friday, I would head out to a place that I love: Palm Springs, California. It is just a two-hour drive to sunny paradise and a great escape for a weekend of fun and relaxation. I would begin my Summer Friday with my husband and our two standard poodles, Lucie and Vali, by having a delicious breakfast and a Bloody Mary in a glass boot at Cheeky’s. On a satisfied belly, we’d stroll down Palm Canyon Drive to do some shopping at Flow Modern and Bon Vivant. Both shops always have gorgeous and unique mid-century home furnishings and accessories. Then it’s a wonderful day of lounging by the pool at the Colony Palms Hotel. My new favorite discovery is a trip out to Joshua Tree for a relaxing and rejuvenating sound bath at the Integratron. To end the perfect Summer Friday, it’s time to take in, breathe in, and appreciate the beautiful backdrop of the desert mountains with sunsets of pinks and corals like no other.”
“It’s not cheap,” Decades proprietor Cameron Silver said at the Crosby Hotel. “That’s the amazing thing about costume jewelry. I rejected it for years at first because I thought, ‘Who wants to spend $2,000 on a glass necklace?’ It requires education. It’s the design, the final product, that is incredibly valuable.” The retailer (and soon-to-be Bravo reality TV star) has since swung to the other side, so much so that Silver was even talking men’s costume pieces. But he was in like-minded company last night: Silver joined fellow panelists Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant, Candy Pratts Price, and Miriam Haskell president Gabrielle Fialkoff in a CFDA-sponsored discussion on the heritage and business of costume jewelry.
Moderated by Town & Country accessories director Stellene Volandes, the conversation steered from a beginner’s history lesson (Coco Chanel and Miriam Haskell were chummy costume jewelry colleagues) to the modern-day obsession with celebrity (Michelle Obama created an online ordering frenzy for the Miriam Haskell chandelier earrings she wore to the State Dinner this past March). Bryant, for one, was well accustomed to celebrities and the role costume jewelry can play. “For Joan, she has this pen necklace and I think of it as her sword,” the costume designer said of the character the actress Christina Hendricks plays in Mad Men. “It’s funny because Christina never wants to part with it. The actress can become attached to the jewelry, too.”
A tip for the AMC show’s many fashion followers: Bryant found the signature piece in an unlikely “dirty little tin of jewelry at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.” And despite delays and some nail-biting negotiations, it looks like there were will be plenty of episodes with vintage finds ahead. “I was never worried,” Bryant told Style.com post-discussion, about the show being renewed for Season 5. “I had faith.”

Mad Men returns this Sunday on AMC, and to celebrate the much-anticipated return of Don, Betty, and their martini-swilling cohorts, AMC and Banana Republic hosted a splashy Hollywood premiere last night at Mann’s Grauman’s Chinese Theatre. After a word from creator Matthew Weiner—no cell phones and no giving away plotlines; “I really don’t want to see it on the front page of The New York Times,” he explained—the lights dimmed and we were in Mad world. And after the credits rolled and the guests headed for the Chateau Marmont for the after-party, we still were. There were all the period touches: cigarette girls, a jazz quartet, and, of course, stiff martinis. The only slightly jarring bit was the cast—Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks (in Dolce & Gabbana), and Elisabeth Moss (in Oscar de la Renta)—stripped of their sixties accoutrements, appearing in twenty-first-century dress. But then, show-vs.-life confusion is par for the course. “People sometimes come up to me and say, ‘you’re so much prettier in real life,’ ” said Moss, who plays no-nonsense career girl Peggy Olson.”I’m not really sure how to take that, so I just politely say thank you.”
The following afternoon, Mad Men mania continued: Banana Republic hosted a lunch at the Sunset Tower Hotel in honor of a video blog collaboration between its creative director, Simon Kneen, and the show’s costume designer, Janie Bryant. The short videos, which feature Kneen and Bryant chewing the sartorial fat and discovering a shared love of menswear, will go up on AMC’s Web site this Sunday. They’re part of BR’s “Mad About Style” campaign, which includes a casting-call opportunity for customers to win a walk-on part on the show. Over chicken paillard and watermelon sorbet, Bryant revealed that some of the Mad Men wardrobe pieces are actually direct hand-me-downs from her mother and grandmother. She also attempted—without much success, as it turned out—to single out her favorite character to dress. “Rachel Menken. I also loved Bobbie Barrett. And Trudy, Joan, and Peggy. And of course Betty. Oh, don’t make me choose!”
Mad Men costume designer Janie Bryant is launching her own line, Mod by Janie Bryant, on QVC. It’s inspired by fifties and sixties fashions, like those on Mad Men, but Jon Hamm, sadly, doesn’t come with purchase. [WWD]
Isabella Rossellini has designed a new bag for Bulgari (pictured), a rectangular tote available in four versions, including ponyskin and patent. The bag has a snail-print lining—”We chose the snail, just because my bag is a little bit like my home,” Rossellini said—though presumably not snails in flagrante as in the ageless actress’ “Green Porno” series for Sundance.
