An Early Glimpse at Tonight’s Secret Victoria’s Secret Model Lineup

-------

Victoria's Secret rehersal

Walking the annual Victoria’s Secret extravaganza is a milestone in any model’s career. After all, it’s as much about lighting up the stage with your personality (not to mention dance moves—who could forget Jourdan Dunn doing the robot last year?) as it is about having a killer body, and being able to smile while strutting with a pair of thirty-pound wings on your back. While there’s no way to confirm exactly who will be appearing on the VS catwalk this evening alongside Taylor Swift, we’ve come up with an educated guess based on social media clues gathered over the past week, as well as shots from yesterday’s rehearsal (like the one above, featuring Sara Sampaio, Martha Hunt, Jasmine Tookes, and Leva Laguna working the runway).

Victoria's secret

Of course there are bound to be appearances by veteran Angels such as Adriana Lima (it will be her fourteenth time participating in the show), Candice Swanepoel, Alessandra Ambrosio, Behati Prinsloo, Doutzen Kroes, Lily Aldridge, Karlie Kloss, and Cara Delevingne. [Regrettably, Miranda Kerr announced she will be ending her contract with the lingerie megalith to pursue other projects.] Those aforementioned supers are all but givens at this point, and so it’s the remaining twenty-plus coveted slots—selected by casting director John Pfeiffer—that really get us excited. Style.com has learned that several high fashion runway regulars will be making their VS debuts tonight: Sigrid Agren and Josephine Skriver (both posted snapshots of themselves sporting the official Angels bomber jacket on Instagram), as well as Ming Xi, Maria Borges, Kasia Struss, and Jac. We were even more thrilled to hear that some our top Spring ’14 newcomers including Malaika Firth, Devon Windsor, Cindy Bruno, and Sara Sampaio also beat out dozens of more established girls to earn their first pair of wings.

Dean and Dan Caten: Crank Yankers²

-------

Dsquared²‘s Dean and Dan Caten have taken a cinematic approach to showcasing their collections of late (who could forget last season, when the pair dressed up in drag for their Spring ’13 film?). In order to tell the story behind their Pre-Fall ’13 range, the brothers have expanded upon their Resort video, in which Cara Delevingne—dressed in the house’s glam-gone-grunge wares—screams into a gritty pay phone. Lensed by Senio Zapruder, the new short (above) stars Jasmine Tookes, who prank calls Delevingne while wearing Dsquared²’s decadent vintage Hollywood looks. “[Resort and Pre-Fall] are two very different types of collections—Jasmine is all thirties, and Cara is nineties sexy—but it was an interesting way to connect them,” offered Dan, noting that previous Dsquared² girls, including Lindsey Wixson and Jessica Stam, make cameos as x-ed-out images in Jasmine’s diary.

“We have fun and we don’t take ourselves too seriously; that’s what makes our job interesting,” said Dan when asked about he and Dean’s penchant for dramatics—apparent not only in their videos but also on the runway (Spring ’14 menswear, anyone?). “Sometimes we get bitched out about it, but if we had to be serious and political, and think too much, we would get bored. So whatever; we’re not boring like that yet, and when I am, I will probably stop doing what I do,” he added.

The designers feel it’s important to work with young talent on their creative projects—director Zapruder is a student, and Stefano Riva, who wrote the music for the short, is only 17. “Young people have a lot of fresh ideas and energy. And they know stuff! I’m almost 50, I don’t go out as much as I should, and kids keep you attached to the world,” said Dan.

The brand’s next project will be a film for its new underwear line. “It’s going to be super, super hot,” said Dan. “Like hard-core hot. And we just did a baby collection…. I’m sure we could do a couple things for that royal baby.”

Victoria’s Secret: The New Class

-------

Devoted model obsessives pore over the casting for shows like Balenciaga, Prada, and Calvin Klein. But while most models are indeed thrilled to book high-fashion shows, many say the one they most dream of is the annual Victoria’s Secret lingerie spectacular. At last night’s epic show, there were plenty of Angels we’ve already come to know and love including Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio, Doutzen Kroes, and Candice Swanepoel. But there were also 11 new girls, most very recognizable as European catwalk veterans. This year’s rookies included: Style.com/Print cover star Cara Delevingne and her fellow Brit Jourdan Dunn, Hilary Rhoda, Frida Gustavsson (left), Shu Pei Qin, Barbara Palvin, Jasmine Tookes, and Jessica Hart. We’ve got our favorite newcomer. How about you?

Pleats And Leather: Better Together?

-------

Remember Melanie Griffith’s famous quote from Working Girl—”I have a head for business and a bod for sin”? We’re not sure the actress wore a pleated leather skirt in that classic eighties flick, but every time we see one on the runway, that’s the line that goes through our mind. One part lady, another part badass, they turned up at Celine and Prada for Spring and more recently at Calvin Klein Collection—glimpse model Jasmine Tookes working those buttery folds at last week’s pre-fall show. Karl Lagerfeld did one for his new collection, Karl, too. And we’ve got proof positive that these skirts make the cut on the streets. Model-off-duty Sara Blomqvist was snapped wearing a short version between shows in Paris, and we spotted actress-of-the-moment Felicity Jones working the look at the Bulgari holiday party in L.A.

Style.com asked these newcomers (and their agents) to capture a few candid moments of their own during the shows. Here are a few selects from their cell phone camera dispatches.
