Despite the seemingly endless controversy surrounding Jay Z’s collection for Barneys, news broke this week that the pricey range, which includes black and gold clothes and accessories created in collaboration with houses like Lanvin and Balmain, raised a whopping $1 million for charity. Who knew that Big Pimpin’ and altruism could make such lovely bedfellows?
There’s another rapper falling into fashion’s favor. Today, WWD reports, Alexander Wang has teamed up with Dr. Dre to turn out a pair of limited-edition black and gold Beats by Dr. Dre headphones. It’s been a rap-filled year for fashion, what with Kanye West’s A.P.C. collab, A$AP Rocky’s cameo on the Hood by Air runway, and Jay Z’s Picasso Baby shoot, but for Wang, it would seem, it’s all about the D.R.E.
Mario Testino has photographed everyone from Joan Smalls and Gisele Bündchen to Jay Z and Jennifer Lawrence—plus, he’s lensed countless covers and editorials, for everyone (and we mean everyone) from V Magazine to Vanity Fair. The legendary Peruvian photographer was not, however, on Instagram—until now, that is. We well know that if there’s any place to leak behind-the-scenes footage, it’s on the Internet. And with his esteemed roster of collaborators, who knows what filtered finds Testino’s account might bring. Needless to say, he deserves a “Follow.”
Artist collaborations are a dime a dozen in fashion, but transgressive photographer Andres Serrano (if you’re not familiar with his controversial works like Piss Christ, perhaps you recognize him from Jay-Z’s Picasso Baby music video) was one of the last creatives we’d expect to see popping up in the mainstream market. So we were shocked to see Serrano team up with Altamont Apparel on a new range of T-shirts featuring some of his envelope-pushing images, including Piss Christ, Black Baby Jesus, America, and The Morgue. The coolest part is the accompanying video, which delves into Serrano’s methodology. “Sometimes art that is not completely understood is the best art of all, because it has a dynamic and push and pull,” he says in the short. “I like to find beauty in the most unexpected places.”
If you’re looking to give your loved ones a set of gilded brass knuckles this holiday season, look no further than Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter’s collaboration with Barneys. Following in the footsteps of Lady Gaga, who designed a holiday workshop for the retailer in 2011, Hova has worked with labels such as Proenza Schouler, En Noir, Rick Owens, Acne Studios, Lanvin, Balenciaga (above, top right), Balmain (above, bottom left), Hoorsenbuhs (who had a hand in the aforementioned ring, above, bottom right), and more to create a series of limited-edition products—all of which will be displayed and for sale in a special gallery in Barneys’ Madison Avenue flagship, beginning November 20. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds from the project, which the pair have dubbed A New York Holiday, will be donated to the Shawn Carter Foundation. We’ve got 99 problems (give or take), but, thanks to this team-up, holiday shopping ain’t one.
