Kanye “Cannes” Do Film, Too, And More Of The Day’s Top Stories

-------

Kanye’s at Cannes (Kim Kardashian in tow, naturally), and he’s not going to let the film set steal the limelight. Therapper-slash-designer is debuting his own movie (which he wrote, produced, and directed), entitled Cruel Summer, tonight at Le Palm Beach Casino. The film, described as “unlike anything West has ever attempted before,” stars comedian Aziz Ansari and Lebanese actress Razane Jammal. [Page Six]

Is there another baby Bündchen on the way? Rumors are circulating that the Brazilian beauty and her husband, Tom Brady, are expecting their second child, after various news outlets have reported that the supermodel told Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, who dressed Bündchen for the Met gala, that she was two months along so he could adjust the dress accordingly. If you ask us, there doesn’t seem to be any bump in sight, but then again, she’s Gisele. Stranger things have happened. [Telegraph]

The partnership between Marc Jacobs and Yayoi Kusama first started when the Japanese artist painted her defining dot motif on the Louis Vuitton Ellipse bag in 2006, and now, six years later, Kusama’s dots are going to be on LV goods worldwide. The duo is set to launch a line of clothes and accessories on July 10, just two days before a Kusama retrospective opens at the Whitney Museum in New York. [WWD]

At last, a first look at the trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby, starring Carey Mulligan and Leonardo DiCaprio. Look out for flapper dresses and vintage clothing (many of the dresses are from Ashley Olsen’s personal collection) as well as music by Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Jack White. Oh yeah, and the chemistry between Mulligan and DiCaprio. [Grazia Daily]

Georgia May Jagger, a material girl? Madonna and her daughter Lourdes say yes. Taking over for Kelly Osbourne, the 20-year-old gapped-tooth model has been tapped as the new face of Madonna’s Material Girl fashion line, making her debut in the upcoming back-to-school campaign. [WWD]

Babyoncé Arrives (Maybe), Remembering Herb Ritts, A Roundup Of The New Spring Campaigns, And More…

-------

Has the new Beyoncé/Jay-Z collaboration finally dropped? The rumor mill (and, naturally, the British tabloid press) is buzzing that Beyoncé may have gone into labor, and may have given birth to a daughter whose name may be Tiana-May Carter. No official word yet from mom and pop. [Observer]

Nowness takes a look back through the career of legendary fashion photog Herb Ritts, unearthing a few choice unseen photos and reminiscences from his famous collaborators, including Cindy Crawford (left), Naomi Campbell, and Richard Gere. “All of us experienced pain with Herb, but the pain was worth it,” Campbell said. “You want one of those photographs in your lifetime of modeling.” [Nowness]

Speaking of fashion photographers, the world may have just gotten a new one: Critically lauded contemporary lensman Jack Pierson, who has just shot the new Bottega Veneta Spring campaign with Karmen Pedaru. [WWD]

And speaking of campaigns, here are all the latest from Spring. [Fashionologie]

Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black Dress Goes On The Block, Chanel Iman Gained Weight For The VS Show, And More…

-------

The strapless dress Amy Winehouse wore on the cover of her Back to Black album is being auctioned off (for an estimated £10,000 to £20,000) at the end of the month. The dress, designed by Central Saint Martins graduate Disaya Sorakraikitikul, will benefit a charity in Winehouse’s memory. [Telegraph]

Kensington Palace is getting a whole new look, staff uniforms included. Stuart Stockdale, the design director of Jaeger, has been working with Palace curator Deirdre Murphy on a new uniform inspired by the “Palace’s 1,000-piece dress archive for inspiration, with 19th- and 20th-century men’s court uniforms and the wardrobe of Edward VIII proving highlights.” [Vogue U.K.]

While the rest of the models appearing in today’s Victoria’s Secret runway show have been surviving on “liquids and egg powder,” Chanel Iman has managed to pack on 15 pounds for the show. Iman says, “I drink a lot of protein shakes and do a lot of weight lifting.” [Huff Po]

Kanye West reportedly invited the entire Mercer Hotel staff to his New Jersey “Watch the Throne” performance with Jay-Z last night. He gave all of them complimentary tickets because “‘sources said the stars wanted to return the favor after they took over the second floor of the Soho hotel to produce their album and were well looked-after.” [Page Six]

A Couture-Level Show

-------

“Couture-level flow, it’s never going on sale / Luxury rap, the Hermès of verses.” So promised Kanye West, who performed “Otis” alongside Jay-Z live at the MTV Video Music Awards last night. The two might have kept their stage looks casual last night, but they’re unabashed designer-philes. Unwrap their gold, Riccardo Tisci-designed, record-breaking album Watch the Throne, and you’ll find the duo dropping names—Manolo and Margiela among them. (One day, they may be able to add the name of Kanye’s own label to the mix, too.)

Name-dropping is nothing new in rap and R&B, but more and more, young artists are working in high-fashion references with panache. Sure, some—like Kreayshawn, the 21-year-old Oaklander and recent i-D covergirl, who says “Gucci Gucci, Louis Louis, Fendi Fendi, Prada / Basic bitches wear that shit, so I don’t even bother”—claim not to go for big labels. But the best up-and-comers sound like they’re reading their Style.com. The hipster hip-hoppers at Das Racist, for example (“Tell the interns to shut the Di-or”). Or Harlem MC ASAP Rocky, who says, “Raf Simons, Rick Owens / Usually what I’m dressed in.” Oh, that was you we spotted at Atelier?

And if rappers love fashion, fashion loves them right back. The industry has taken a liking to Salem’s Jack Donoghue, who joins Kreayshawn in the latest i-D, regularly wears Givenchy Rottweiler shirts, and has become a fixture on Terry’s Diary. M.I.A. protégée Rye Rye has appeared in videos for Prabal Gurung; Santigold, for Alexander Wang. (Wang’s been a hip-hop fan for years. Foxy Brown headlined his after-party in 2008.) Theophilus London hit the menswear circuit in Paris last season alongside the likes of Usher and Kanye; next up, he’ll front a Carlos Campos ad campaign and design a shoe with Cole Haan.

Coppola Walks The Aisle In Alaïa, Baby Beyoncé Is On the Way, Hurricane Irene Rains On DVF’s Parade, And More…

-------

Over the weekend, Sofia Coppola married singer Thomas Nars in a custom-made, “chiffon with a blush of lilac” gown by Azzedine Alaïa. He also made a special party dress for Coppola’s daughter, Romy. [WWD]

Designer Walter Van Beirendonck’s clothes have always “bridged the gap between art and fashion, proving that wearable garments could also express extreme concepts and humor.” Through his clothes, he has pushed issues like AIDS activism, war, ecology, and mass consumerism. At last, his influential work will be displayed in a retrospective, Dream the World Awake, at MoMu in Antwerp. [Hint]

One of the biggest stories from last night’s VMA awards: Beyoncé is pregnant. The singer revealed her baby bump and confirmed that she and her husband, Jay-Z, are expecting their first child. Jay-Z also surprised fans when he took the stage for a performance with Kanye West. [Huffington Post]

In preparation for Hurricane Irene, cultural events were canceled and restaurants were closed throughout New York, including Diane von Furstenberg’s screening of Tanner Hall. After speaking with Mayor Bloomberg, DVF and husband Barry Diller called off their screening and party in the Hamptons for their daughter, Tatiana von Furstenberg, and Ringo Starr’s stepdaughter, Francesca Gregorini, who co-directed movie.
