Rodarte’s Night At The Museum
It’s a Black Swan kind of week in L.A., as Natalie Portman looks likely to clinch the Oscar on Sunday. So what better time for her pals at Rodarte, Laura and Kate Mulleavy, to debut their first solo exhibition—of their Black Swan designs, no less? L.A. MOCA’s Jeffrey Deitch snagged the sisters’ designs for Rodarte: States of Matter, which opens March 4 at the museum. The tightly edited collection of Swarovski crystal-dusted costumes and other sculptural designs was brought to life by the duo’s longtime collaborator, French producer Alexandre de Betak, who also works on their runway shows. “We wanted to express the duality of dark and light,” de Betak explained at a preview of the exhibition last night, referencing the strict color theme and extreme lighting design. “It’s in the different textures they use and it was important to express that in the way we brought it all together—the fluorescent and then the moody lighting, the beautiful white costumes and the drama of the dark.”
Hot on the heels of their Fall ’11 show, the critical darlings attracted an impressive showing considering Oscar week’s tight social calendar. In town for Barry Diller’s pre-Oscar luncheon, CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg stopped in to congratulate the sisters and spent time with André Balazs, while guests like China Chow, Liz Goldwyn, and Audrey Marnay milled. Even crosstown rival LACMA’s Michael Govan arrived with his wife, Balenciaga’s Katherine Ross, in Rodarte for the occasion.
Of their first solo exhibition, Kate Mulleavy felt they’d found the perfect home. “It’s so amazing because MOCA is such a special cultural place in Los Angeles and even globally now. Having grown up here, it’s such an honor. We’ve never really done anything like this before in Los Angeles.” And it appears collaborating with de Betak was key. “It makes it even more special to do it with Alex. He’s such an incredible artist and what he does allows us to build these worlds. The fact that he took a chance on us even though we’re still relatively younger and independent is amazing, and being able to continue to work together so many seasons is special.”
Who, What, Where, And When At Art Basel
We’re at that time of year when the party winds blow south—to Art Basel Miami Beach. Two of the week’s busiest spots are starting things off tonight: At The Webster, the Brazilian footwear company Melissa is throwing a dinner in honor of Italian designer and architect Gaetano Pesce; meanwhile, at brand-spanking-new Soho Beach House, Jay Jopling’s big-time gallery, White Cube, will be tippling until 3 a.m.
This time around, erstwhile gallerist Jeffrey Deitch will be at Miami Basel as director of L.A.’s Museum of Contemporary Art. As usual, though, he’s hosting a big backyard party at the Raleigh (whose famous pool is pictured, above) on Wednesday, and this year he’s booked LCD Soundsystem. Other Wednesday night options include cocktails with The Last Magazine at The Webster and a party in a car park designed by Herzog & de Meuron—home of the new boutique The Alchemist, which has partnered with the art-world Web site Art Ruby for its inaugural Basel party.
But the real circus night is shaping up to be Thursday. Naturally, both Schnabel men are involved. Papa is doing a star-studded screening of his latest film, Mistral, in collaboration with Maybach and J/P HRO, Sean Penn’s Haiti charity; son Vito, meanwhile, is hosting a late-night bash at Wall with pals Stavros Niarchos and Alex Dellal. In between, there are fashion-heavy dinners for W and Interview magazines (at Cecconi’s and the Delano’s Solarium, respectively), not to mention one at The Webster hosted by La Mer. Across the bay, Bally is celebrating its pop-up shop and collaboration with Swiss artist Philippe Decrauzat. They Wish They All Could Be California Artists
New York tends to think of itself as the art capital of the U.S. That it may be—but it’s getting a little competition from Los Angeles, which, not too long ago, poached one of NYC’s most respected gallerists, Jeffrey Deitch, to direct its Museum of Contemporary Art. And for his new show at MOCA, The Artist’s Museum, he’s drawing on L.A.’s own resources—namely, the work of area artists, both established and emerging. Longtime art supporters Lubov and Max Azria hosted a fête for the new show (set to run through January) last night at their L.A. home. “I think for a long time MOCA has been pushed to the side. But if you look at the Whitney Biennial, so many of those artists are from California,” Lubov explained. “California always has something different to say than New York, so to see so many of the newer and established artists together—and in my own home—is incredible.”
The crowd included fashionable Angelenas, including transplanted New Yorkers like Eva Amurri and Jessica Joffe, as well as artists Barbara Kruger, Kenny Scharf, and Bill Viola. “Los Angeles is a creative capital, and so this is where a lot of the ambitious and creative people want to be,” Deitch said of the art/fashion overlap (both at the party and at the show, which is sponsored by BCBG). “What’s so exciting is that the creative people in these different fields are now connecting with one another.”
