Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays one half of a gay couple on the hit sitcom Modern Family, took to Twitter yesterday to announce two new but related projects. One is a marriage. The other is a new collection of bow ties—which, he hopes, will help to make that marriage possible.
Ferguson’s been a bow tie wearer since the success of Modern Family set him on the red-carpeted path to fame. He began collecting the ties but bemoaned that great ones were hard to find—which sent him to the online tie boutique The Tie Bar and, eventually, to a collaboration with them on a capsule collection of his own. “I thought, wouldn’t it be interesting if I created a line of bow ties for them and kind of dipped my toe into the fashion world,” he said. Boyfriend-turned-fiancé Justin Mikita (right, with Ferguson)—the couple used the occasion of the collaboration to announce their engagement publicly—suggested donating the proceeds from the collection’s sales to benefit marriage equality. Hence the duo’s new foundation, Tie the Knot, was born.
The collection includes 20 ties in custom fabrics inspired by Ferguson and Mikita’s home and belongings, and will go on sale at TheTieBar.com in November. Naturally, they won’t be the only political statement made in November; Election Day is November 6. Given that Modern Family has been name-dropped by Republicans including Ann Romney—generally not the party to advocate for marriage equality—we wondered if the timing was a rejoinder of sorts. (Modern Family producer Steven Levitan already tweeted at Mrs. Romney that he is glad she’s a fan, and offered her a role as an officiant at the wedding of Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet’s characters Mitchell and Cameron—as soon as it’s legal.)
“The timing just felt right,” Ferguson said. “I think a lot of people watch our show who aren’t terribly comfortable with a gay couple living together and raising a kid together…I think maybe a lot of people’s minds are being opened up. I think that could extend all the way up to some of our presidential candidates who are saying they’re not for marriage equality.”
And, he added, “I know that the Obamas also really like [the show]. I feel like it’s the one thing they agree on, that they both like Modern Family.”
