Snoop, Top Dogg At Coachella

-------

Top models (Karlie Kloss, Hanne Gaby Odiele, and Raquel Zimmermann), designers (Alexander Wang), and celebrities (Kate Bosworth, Katy Perry, and Lily Collins) decamped to Indio this weekend for Coachella. Photographer David X. Prutting was on the scene for Style.com, capturing the crowd as they took in the headline acts and hit the party scene. What musician proved to be this year’s biggest draw? Two words: Snoop Dogg. The likes of Fergie, Josh Duhamel, Rose McGowan, and Chanel Iman all told us they were there to catch the rapper in action. There was also, of course, a large contingent there for Radiohead—including Alek Wek, Kloss, Jessica Szohr, and Ruby Aldridge—and the Black Keys, Wang and Zimmermann among them. In case you weren’t about to make the trek to the desert this weekend, here is Style.com’s postcard from Coachella.

Tommy Hilfiger’s Prep House Touches Down In New York

-------

Muffy, we’re not in East Hampton anymore. Those planning a Meatpacking District shopping excursion this weekend can’t possibly miss the out-of-place beach cottage plonked Wizard of Oz-style across the way from the Gansevoort Hotel. The tornado responsible: Tommy Hilfiger, who is on a mission to spread the gospel of prep to every corner of the world this year. The designer told Style.com last night, “Prepsters aren’t too serious about fashion. They want to be casual about fashion, a bit rumpled, but still fun and put together. It’s more a state of mind, and I think that’s why it has become so widespread.” Hilfiger has pulled out all the stops with his prefab, 800-square-foot pop-up house, which will rove from city to city, bringing with it the new, 60-piece Tommy Hilfiger Prep World capsule collection. Also for sale are select vintage pieces including lace-up, striped sundresses for the girls and cool letterman sweaters for guys, as well as accoutrements like dog leashes and “Prepgammon” board games.

Hilfiger brought in friend and collaborator Lisa Birnbach, expert on all things preppy and author of True Prep: It’s a Whole New Old World, to consult on the shop’s decor. It’s fitted out with anything and everything you could imagine turning up in an Andover alum’s summer digs: a wall of a colorful decoy ducks, Adirondack chairs, croquet sets, and even a tennis racket chandelier. There’s also an iPhone app for shoppers, which can superimpose images of the clothing or of the ficitional “The Hilfigers” clan onto camera phone pictures. Jessica Szohr, Krysten Ritter, and John Legend (who engaged in a lively Ping-Pong match) were just a few of the guests who came out to kick off the Prep World tour last night with a preview party at the Standard hotel last night; after New York, the pop-up house will travel to L.A., London, Paris, Madrid, Milan, and Stockholm this summer. So much for traveling light—the house requires three tractor-trailers to transport and four days to set up for each location.

The Prep World pop-up house, located in Gansevoort Plaza, is open to the public today through Sunday (college students get a 15 percent discount), and the collection is also available in Tommy Hilfiger retail stores and online at www.tommy.com/prep.

A “1, 2 Step” Makeover

-------

Most like to keep a facelift a secret. Not Lord & Taylor. The oldest department store in New York City celebrated its $25 million makeover last night, with Mayor Mike Bloomberg (who declared it Lord & Taylor Day), Gossip Girl‘s Jessica Szohr, and Denise Richards all in attendance. “It was 35 years in the making, so we are thrilled to have been able to renovate the store in such a current format and yet be respectful of our great tradition,” said CEO Brendan Hoffman of the yearlong remodel that updated the first level and the men’s floor, and a new home section.

Designers like Anna Sui and Elie Tahari roamed the party—spanning ten floors—to check out aerial dancers, sounds from a 20-piece Latin jazz band, a beer garden, and Swarovski crystal tattoos. The entire evening benefited VH1′s Save the Music Foundation, which promotes musical education in schools. It’s a cause close to the heart of the evening’s entertainment, Ciara (left). “Without music, we have nothing,” she said. “It means a lot to be able to help young kids from all over the world express themselves through music.” Having done her part, the singer was ready to head home, kick off her Alaia leopard-print platforms, and watch basketball. “I am missing the Miami Heat game tonight—that’s the team for me,” she said. Careful what you say in New York, Ciara.

Blasblog: One Weekend, Two Birthdays

-------

No one needs to be told of the weather that New York experienced this weekend: the first fully sunny, fully warm couple of days of 2009 in this busy city. But while every single tourist in town seemed to stop and admire the city on my block, the real fun happened after dark. Jessica Stam’s birthday party was Friday night at a new club—”it’s not even open yet,” she explained—on Eighth Avenue called The Gates. Joining her were a good smattering of fashion folk (current Chanel campaign girl Heidi Mount), downtown types (DJ Harley Viera Newton), and the requisite Gossip Girl shout-outs (Chace Crawford and Jessica Szohr). The model, who turned 23, went all out with popcorn machines, a cotton candy stand, and a photo booth that got a little racy for some of the guests. On Saturday, the Thompson Hotels’ Jason Pomeranc hosted his own birthday party at his Thompson LES hotel; his group was similar to Stam’s but expanded into more social genres, like pop music (Jesse McCartney) and society (Byrdie Bell). Ever the businessman, Pomeranc timed his fête with the opening of Shang’s second-floor terrace. “I just did it to look popular,” the hotelier jested. “This way it looks like I have a lot of friends, but I’m sure everyone just came for the cocktails and food.” He was being modest. Several hours later, his pals Paz de la Huerta, Yigal Azrouël, and Crawford were still partying at Above Allen, the club on the hotel’s 7th floor.
