Even Kimye Will Come Out for a Good Cause

-------

Gelila Puck, Franca Sozzani, Kanye West, Kim Kardashian

Last night in L.A., some of the biggest names in fashion, music, film, and food came together at the inaugural gala and auction for Wolfgang and Gelila Puck’s Dream for Future Africa Foundation. Gelila, who was born in Ethiopia, founded the organization in 2010 in order to help the children of Africa. Indeed, it’s a good cause—one that drew everyone from Karolina Kurkova, Angela Lindvall, and Dita Von Teese to Quincy Jones, Smokey Robinson, and Reed Krakoff. “Tonight as I was getting ready, standing in my closet, this white gown called out to me,” the hostess said of her Deco dress. “I chose to wear white to represent our organic spirit in honor of our mission.”

As guests including Ali Larter, Maria Sharapova, Devon Aoki, and Rachel Zoe mingled, a newly engaged Kanye West and Kim Kardashian arrived just in time to greet the evening’s honoree, Vogue Italia editor in chief Franca Sozzani. “I doubt Franca knows this, but my first modeling job was with Vogue Italia,” said Amber Valletta while introducing Sozzani to the crowd. She later added that the editor changed the course of her career. Taking the stage to accept her accolade, Sozzani coined the night’s catchphrase: “Giving back is the new luxury.”

East Meets West at New York Fashion Week

-------

vivienne tam and liu wen“No sleep, no sleep tonight!” said Vivienne Tam on Friday evening, moments after arriving at the China Beauty Charity Fund’s inaugural gala. The designer, who had taken a break from her own show’s fitting in order to attend the event, scooped up an honorary award for her support of emerging Chinese design talent. Dubbed “China Fashion Night,” the affair drew guests including Liu Wen, Miroslava Duma, and Carmen Dell’Orefice to the St. Pierre Hotel for a dinner and auction that culminated in the presentation of Chinese haute couturiere Guo Pei’s fantastical clothes.

Over cocktails, Pei’s lavish wares certainly had partygoers talking. “I want to know exactly how heavy it is,” said Karolina Kurkova, admiring a bell-shaped ball gown made entirely from gold threading. So heavy were the dresses, and so ridiculously high were the platform shoes, that the models had to be hoisted onstage.

It seemed many of those in attendance came out of admiration for Yue-Sai Kan, the fashion doyenne who, as the charity’s founder, raises funds for Chinese graduates to study at FIT. It was Kan’s idea to bring Chinese haute couture to New York. “In China, Pei is a legend, but here you haven’t heard of her,” said Kan. She then added, “I think this is a good time for us to show her off.”

Pirelli Buttons Up for Fifty

-------

A preview of the new Pirelli calendar

The annual Pirelli calendar—famed for showcasing saucy shots of supermodels in the buff—celebrates fifty this year with a megawatt lineup, including Helena Christensen, Alessandra Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr, Alek Wek, Karolina Kurkova, and Isabeli Fontana. But judging by the series of tribute images —reportedly lensed not by the yet-to-be-revealed 2013 calendar photographer, but by Pirelli vets Patrick Demarchelier and Peter Lindbergh to build hype around the half-century milestone—the calendar’s stars are decidedly more dressed up than usual—well, by Pirelli standards, anyway. The catwalkers were snapped in black lingerie, as well as white shirts and their Skivvies. The full calendar, which has, in the past, been shot by the likes of Bruce Weber, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Karl Lagerfeld, and Inez and Vinoodh (just to name a few), will be unveiled thisNovember—no word yet if the final images will be more, ahem, stripped-down.

From the Catwalk to the Carpet: Models Take Over at Cannes

-------

Doutzen Kroes, Joan Smalls, and Barbara Palvin in Cannes

Every year, the crème de la crème of the film industry get glammed up to hobnob and vamp for the paparazzi at the Cannes Film Festival. While A-listers such as Jessica Chastain, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Carey Mulligan, and Zoe Saldana have made an impressive showing thus far, they’ve arguably been eclipsed by the contingent of top-tier catwalkers who have flocked to the red carpets en masse. Yesterday, in particular, was a model-watcher’s paradise, with the likes of Joan Smalls, Petra Nemcova, Barbara Palvin, Chanel Iman, Jessica Hart, and Erin Heatherton posing for the cameras like the pros that they are. Milla Jovovich, Liya Kebede, and Doutzen Kroes were snapped multiple times earlier in the week, and Yasmin Warsame and Irina Lazareanu made some memorable cameos, too. Presumably, even more runway regulars will turn up at the amfAR blowout on Thursday—we’ve got it on authority that Liu Wen and Karolina Kurkova are already in town. Sorry, starlets. When it comes to posing and strutting in borrowed gowns, models simply do it best.

Rag & Bone’s Double DIY

-------

Rag & Bone’s Spring ’13 campaign may have featured polished Alasdair McLellan-lensed images of Kate Moss, but that doesn’t mean designers Marcus Wainwright and David Neville have gone all glossy on us. Today, Rag & Bone revives its DIY Project for the rag & bone/JEAN line. Having originated in 2011, the experimental ads have previously starred the likes of Miranda Kerr, Karolina Kurkova, and Candice Swanepoel (just to name a few), each of whom were given a digital camera, a bag of rag & bone/ JEAN clothes, and free range to shoot and wear whatever they pleased.

“We think [the DIY Project] is a unique way to show the styles of these cool girls, and it also gives people the opportunity to see their respective personalities and experiences,” says Neville. This season, the designers offer a DIY double whammy, having asked both Camille Rowe (above) and Poppy Delevingne (below) to document their rag & bone/JEAN experiences. “I shot my campaign in Mustique, where I was with my boyfriend, sister and friends for New Year’s. I also took some photos in London, which is where my home and heart lie. The final part was taken by my boyfriend in the fields of West Sussex,” said Delevingne. French-born, New York-based Rowe also had her boyfriend snap some images, which show the model in her Soho loft. “I think he’s a pretty talented photographer,” says Wainwright. The girls’ (and their boyfriends’) Spring ’13 DIY handiwork debuts here, exclusively on Style.com.
