The Week in Look of the Day Winners Chosen by You: Americana Fashion, Fall’s Best New Sunglasses, Models-Off-Duty, and More

-------

Look of the dayWhat was on Style.com editors’ minds this week? After celebrating Memorial Day (along with the rest of our U.S. readers), we paid tribute to the national holiday with our Look of the Day poll on Tuesday, rounding up our favorite girls rocking American flag motifs. In the end, you voted for Kate Bosworth wearing a stars-and-stripes tank top with cutoffs at Coachella, but Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s bikini cover-up (those stems!) was a close runner-up. Now that sunny summer days have finally arrived, we mined the recent runways for some new sunglasses inspiration. Your top pick? Tom Ford’s visor-like shades, as seen on Kati Nescher backstage at the designer’s Fall ’14 show. Keeping our eyes on the streets, Thursday’s LOTD highlighted out models-off-duty (including Joan Smalls and winner Chanel Iman) wrapping shirts and jackets around their waists. And with Resort season ramping up next week, we used the opportunity to call out some of the coolest bomber jackets spotted in the new collections.

Runway to Red Carpet: Sparkles Galore and a Courageous Katniss

Jennifer LawrenceWhile the subtle sparkle of diamonds is often the finishing touch on a red-carpet look, a few of the best ensembles of the week were doused with glittering crystals. Elizabeth Banks continued to hit the sartorial nail on the head as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire tour came to a close in New York on Wednesday. She shimmered in a bedazzled black ensemble from Jenny Packham’s Fall ’13 runway. The same evening in Las Vegas, Kate Bosworth chose a scintillating Spring ’14 Fendi frock completely covered in geometric Swarovski crystals for the premiere of her new film, Homefront.

Before finishing its whirlwind press tour in New York, Catching Fire held a star-studded premiere in Los Angeles on Monday, which brought out notables including Kiernan Shipka, Zoë Kravitz, and Sarah Hyland. Shipka charmed in a black silk sleeveless blouse and skirt embroidered with green and blue floral beading from Miu Miu’s Spring ’14 collection, and Kravitz opted for a Balenciaga Spring ’14 LBD with a wide neckline and buttons up the side. The nod for best dressed of the evening goes to the film’s leading lady, Jennifer Lawrence, in a daring sheer Dior Fall ’13 Couture gown with a full skirt over a strapless black bodysuit. We appreciate that Katniss is as fearless on the red carpet as she is in the arena.

Runway to Red Carpet: Glittering Lips and the Couture Treatment

Diane Kruger, in ChanelWhile the red-carpet circuit began with a slow start over the weekend, the premieres and parties kicked into overdrive as the week continued. Thor: The Dark World‘s leading lady, Natalie Portman, was a vision in white at the film’s Berlin premiere on Sunday, walking the red carpet in a strapless Christian Dior haute couture gown with a full skirt accented with a black ribbon around the waist. On Tuesday evening, Diane Kruger also opted for a haute couture number, choosing a black sequined cocktail dress embroidered with florals from Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring ’13 runway at the brand’s Little Black Jacket event in Brazil.

As the premiere circuit continued into the week, Hailee Steinfeld donned a Saint Laurent ensemble straight from the Spring ’14 runway, pairing a white one-shoulder top covered in sequined red lips with tailored black pants at the Hollywood premiere of her film, Ender’s Game. The same evening, Kate Bosworth chose a black Christopher Kane gown accented with crystal flowers at the neckline and waist from the Spring ’14 collection for the New York premiere of her flick Big Sur. And Naomi Watts took to the red carpet at the New York premiere of Diana, in which she plays the title role, in a blue-and-white floor-grazing dress that was ruched at the waist below a keyhole cutout from Michael Kors’ Spring ’14 runway.

Runway to Red Carpet: Stars Swathed in Spring, and a Flurry of Dior

Carey MulliganWith the last days of fashion month still fresh in our minds (has it really been over two weeks since we left Paris?), we’re already seeing some of the season’s buzzed-about collections on red-carpet A-listers. The New York Film Festival closed this weekend with a screening of Her, and all three of the flick’s screen sirens stepped out in looks fresh off the Spring ’14 runways. Leading lady Amy Adams wore a figure-hugging Spring ’14 Prabal Gurung lavender sheath with a wide, plunging neckline. Olivia Wilde chose a white blouse and khaki palazzo pants from Michael Kors’ Spring ’14 runway, and Rooney Mara opted for a textured leather top and a black and cream pleated skirt bonded with black and silver foil from Proenza Schouler’s Spring ’14 offering. Last but certainly not least, red-carpet newcomer Lupita Nyong’o impressed in a fresh Spring ’14 Miu Miu frock with a kitschy parrot print at the L.A. premiere of her new film, 12 Years a Slave, on Monday evening.

Dior also made a strong showing on the celebrity circuit this week. Allison Williams, Kate Bosworth, and Carey Mulligan all chose frocks from the Parisian house; the latter donned a sunny yellow cocktail dress with a structured bodice. It was refreshing to see the (currently) brunette bombshell, who has been working with neutral tones in her wardrobe and makeup lately, play it up in a vibrant hue and striking red lip.

The Fashion Friendly Guide to Los AngelesCarole Sabas’ in-the-know guides to such cities as Miami, Paris, and New York are joined this week by The Fashion Friendly Guide to Los Angeles. The Paris Vogue contributor interviewed nearly forty fashion insiders to get their tips on everything from the perfect wood-fired pizza to painless facial extractions. Johnny Depp’s tattoo parlor of choice? Shamrock Social Club. The Rodarte sisters’ favorite cult movie houses? You’ll have to pick up the book.

Both Sabas and those she consulted for the guide (among them Angela Lindvall, Kate Bosworth, and Rachel Zoe) are quick to dispel misconceptions of a city often filtered through the lens of TMZ. “The most open city [I've written about] is definitely Los Angeles,” Sabas told Style.com. “I was amazed at how generous the people are! They like when people love the city and try to understand more than the celebrity culture.”

The tome’s cover features art from Sabas’ regular collaborator Caroline Andrieu. The illustrator created an ethereal portrait of quintessential L.A. It girl (and Mark “The Cobrasnake” Hunter’s girlfriend), model Diane Rosser. “I just love having her on the cover. To me she really represents this West Coast lifestyle,” Sabas says. “[Los Angeles] is very wild and very inspirational. It’s about freedom. You can be whatever you want.”

Below, Sabas consults her new release to map out a perfect L.A. day, exclusively for Style.com.

The Fashion Friendly Guide to Los Angeles is now available online and in-store at McNally Jackson, and later this week at Colette.
