Before a model hits the runway—and before she snags her first editorial, her first ad campaign, and her first billboard—she’s got to make it past the sharp eyes of fashion’s casting directors, who are tasked with finding the perfect girls for designers’ exacting visions. In our fashion week series, the industry’s top casting gurus share their thoughts on who we’ll be seeing this fashion week and beyond.
Natalie Joos casts Zac Posen, Yigal Azrouêl, Charlotte Ronson, and United Bamboo in New York this season. Below, she weighs in on a few of her favorite new and new-to-us faces.
Kelly Mittendorf at MARILYN (left): “She has a more than intriguing look, with slanted, wide-set eyes, a full head of curly chestnut hair, and a big smile at all times. Kelly, a proud American girl from Arizona who can be seen in the new Prada ads, is sure to shoot straight to the top this season.”
Gertrud Hegelund at IMG Paris (center): “Gertrud hails from Sweden and is the younger sister of Agnete (also a model). I booked her for a Turkish Vogue editorial that came out a few months ago. She’s super-tall and regal, and a little bit of an enigma, as she’s being kept very exclusive.”
Josefien Rodermans at SUPREME(right): “[Josefien] has been on my radar since she was a new face at Union models in London. I gave her a spot in my top 30 faces for V last season, and she’s been shooting more and growing into her own modeling skin. She’s working with one designer exclusively in New York. Could it be Calvin? Either way, I’m very proud of her.”
This season, Prada threw a curveball with its Fall campaign, selecting a cast of almost-unknowns for its Steven Meisel-shot ads. But according to the company, innocence was the point. Frida Gustavsson (the most recognizable of the bunch), Kelly Mittendorf, Julia Zimmer, Ondria Hardin, Antonia Wesseloh, and Dorte Limkilde lounge in what the label calls “a dressing room of contemporary desire disguised as a playroom of childhood dreams,” wearing grown-up takes on childhood staples. The fun goes on in Meisel’s accompanying film, debuting above.

After leaking last week, images from Steven Meisel’s Prada Fall ad campaign were officially released today. And leave it to Miuccia (and casting director Ashley Brokaw, of course), to throw a curveball: After tapping some of the modeling world’s biggest for her recent campaigns, she went for lesser-known beauties this time around. Statuesque Swede Frida Gustavsson is the only remotely recognizable face in the bunch. The other five mystery girls making their big splash—Kelly Mittendorf, Julia Zimmer, Ondria Hardin, Antonia Wesseloh, and Dorte Limkilde—are unknowns…for now. They’re all but guaranteed to be in-demand at the Spring ’12 shows, despite the fact that some of them have never set foot on a runway. The one attracting the most buzz is 17-year-old Kelly Mittendorf. The Arizona native, recently signed by the Marilyn agency, has that strong and unique, expressive look that is distinctly Prada. (She’s already been making her fashion chops known on her Tumblr and Twitter pages.) The label’s endorsement is hard to match, let alone to beat. Mrs. P launched careers of many of the top models today, including Sasha Pivovarova, Daria Werbowy, Lindsey Wixson, and Daphne Groeneveld.
