The Spring 2013 issue of Du Jour, the online and print magazine that caters to Gilt Groupe‘s top spenders, has an unlikely cover girl. Out today online and the first week of March in print, the new issue features Kim Kardashian, who, shot by Bruce Weber, appears in her first pregnancy photo shoot. Weber lensed two covers: The first, which debuts above, shows Kardashian dressed up like a Tahitian princess (although, with a floral Du Jour crown hovering about her head, she looks uncannily like a Madonna), while the second depicts her, sans makeup, emerging from a pool. The pared-down photographs were taken at Weber’s Miami home. “We had come off this moment where we launched with Christy Turlington and were lucky enough to have Nicole Kidman on the second cover, with Patrick Demarchelier shooting, and we wanted to try something a little bit different,” says Nicole Vecchiarelli, who serves as the magazine’s co-editor in chief, along with Keith Pollock.
Now one might not think a reality-TV star would appeal to the magazine’s high-net-worth readers, but Vecchiarelli believes Kardashian will capture their interest. “We realized that everyone has an opinion about her. Our idea was that any audience would be able to appreciate seeing someone who they may view in a certain way reshape her image. It was an artistic endeavor, and I think there’s a lot for our audience to really delve in to, whether they’re personally into her or not.” Vecchiarelli adds that the interview with Kardashian, written by Du Jour‘s editor at large Alyssa Giacobbe, reveals that as she approaches motherhood, the reality queen is rethinking her approach to privacy and how she connects with her fans. What’s more is that Weber chose do draw visual comparisons to Kardashian and Elizabeth Taylor (there are even a few images of Kardashian leafing through books about the actress). “Could she ever be an Elizabeth Taylor or Marilyn Monroe personality of her generation? If she [were to become that] it would be because she’s continued down the road that she did with Bruce—opening herself up to different ideas and pairing herself with different kinds of people.”
Mugler creative director Nicola Formichetti can multitask with the best of them. In 2012, the designer styled Lady Gaga, launched his Nicopanda streetwear line and guest edited an issue of Dazed & Confused . Somehow, on top of all that, he still found time to conceive six collections for Mugler and launch the brand’s first collection of luxury handbags.
Ranging from $1,050 to $18,000, the thirty new Spring ’13 purse styles boast Formichetti’s sculptural, futuristic aesthetic. Structured top-handle satchels in a variety of leathers and exotic skins, like patent crocodile and rubber alligator, come with silver hardware accents shaped like talons, while evening clutches have a “weaponlike” appeal. The boxy Agent bag (left)—which, along with the rest of the collection, will be available in Barneys New York, Opening Ceremony, and other select stores from February—has already made rounds on the celebrity circuit, having been spotted on the arms of Kim Kardashian and Gwen Stefani. Naturally, Formichetti is keeping up the pace in 2013. Later this month, Mugler will present their pre-fall collection and unveil a whole new batch of accessories.
Kanye’s at Cannes (Kim Kardashian in tow, naturally), and he’s not going to let the film set steal the limelight. Therapper-slash-designer is debuting his own movie (which he wrote, produced, and directed), entitled Cruel Summer, tonight at Le Palm Beach Casino. The film, described as “unlike anything West has ever attempted before,” stars comedian Aziz Ansari and Lebanese actress Razane Jammal. [Page Six]
Is there another baby Bündchen on the way? Rumors are circulating that the Brazilian beauty and her husband, Tom Brady, are expecting their second child, after various news outlets have reported that the supermodel told Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, who dressed Bündchen for the Met gala, that she was two months along so he could adjust the dress accordingly. If you ask us, there doesn’t seem to be any bump in sight, but then again, she’s Gisele. Stranger things have happened. [Telegraph]
The partnership between Marc Jacobs and Yayoi Kusama first started when the Japanese artist painted her defining dot motif on the Louis Vuitton Ellipse bag in 2006, and now, six years later, Kusama’s dots are going to be on LV goods worldwide. The duo is set to launch a line of clothes and accessories on July 10, just two days before a Kusama retrospective opens at the Whitney Museum in New York. [WWD]

Maybe the much talked-about new White House social secretary, Jeremy Bernard, had something to do with it, or perhaps it’s because it’s an election year, but this weekend’s 98th annual Correspondents’ Association Dinner was its most star-studded ever. Everyone from Reese Witherspoon and Charlize Theron to Kim Kardashian and Lindsay Lohan made appearances, mingling with the President and the First Lady, as well as the usual array of politicians and journalists. At the top of our best-dressed list stand Kate Hudson in a dazzling purple Jenny Packham gown, Dakota Fanning (pictured) in an embellished, sky blue Prada number, and Elizabeth Banks, who sported a bright red Antonio Berardi column with a peplum waist.
