A Moment With J.Lo

-------

In between a nine-city American Idol tour and filming two movies, Jennifer Lopez found a little time to debut her first collection for mass retailer Kohl’s last month, inspired, she said, by “old Hollywood glamour combined with an upbringing in the Bronx.” Unlike the many celebrities trying their hand at fashion design, Jenny is not new to this particular block. Her previous line, Sweetface, launched in the early aughts and shuttered not long thereafter. Despite some high-profile runway theatrics—case in point, Naomi Campbell in a mink hat the size of a pool cover—the line was ultimately criticized for lacking substance behind its style. “I learned a lot from the other fashion endeavors that I did,” Lopez reflects. “What’s different this time is that I didn’t want to compromise quality and fit for price point and I knew there had to be a way to do it right.”

The collection retails from $22 to $150, and Lopez reports that it’s “doing amazingly well, thank God. People really like the fit, the quality, and the stylishness of the line—I couldn’t be more pleased.” She remained tight-lipped about the specifics of the upcoming deliveries for November and December, except to say that the former would include plenty of coral and army green. “I am not really a ‘black’ girl,” she said of her palette preferences. “I feel like other colors flatter you so much more.”
