Aritzia Launches Its #FallForUs Social Media Campaign

-------

Samira Wiley-blog
In today’s social-media-addicted culture, launching a successful brand campaign doesn’t require a blockbuster advertising budget or smooth-talking ad man, à la Don Draper. After all, who pays attention to billboards now when we’re all glued to our iPhones? These days, all it takes to go viral is a creative concept, a catchy hashtag, and engaging the right people (with good looks and lots of followers, of course) across multiple digital platforms.

Aritzia is the latest company courting selfie-obsessed Millennials with its new #FallForUs campaign that will be rolled out on Instagram this week. To kick off the conversation, the popular Canadian retailer—which has been building up its presence in the U.S.—tapped more than 150 cool girls to style and share their favorite pieces (through Olapic, all looks will become instantly shoppable) from the brand’s Fall collection, hitting stores now.

christina-blogAritzia cast a wide net for the project, shooting a dynamic mix of young influencers, including fresh-faced actresses (Jamie Chung; Rachel Brosnahan from House of Cards; and Samira Wiley, who plays our favorite character on Orange Is the New Black), musicians (Estelle and Soko), bloggers (among them, Leandra Medine and Christina Caradona), editors, and more.

“I was thrilled when Aritzia asked me to be a part of its campaign,” Chung told Style.com. “I filmed in Vancouver for years and would blow a good portion of my paycheck there on classic pieces with an edgy tweak.” Meanwhile, Greta Lee, who regularly makes appearances on Girls and Inside Amy Schumer, couldn’t get enough of her outfit for the shoot. “I think you can really see each woman’s individual personality come through. They let me go for this whole fuzzy Eskimo vibe that I was really feeling for some reason on an unbelievably humid day in New York,” she said.

Aside from getting to play dress-up, the best part of Brosnahan’s Aritzia experience was “shooting alongside some strong, badass young women whom I admire.” Caradona concurred: “I loved the diversity of women who were a part of the campaign. So many rad and unique individuals making an impact in the world!” With outspoken advocates like that, we’d estimate #FallForUs just might give #MyCalvins a run for its money.

Style.com’s Dirk Standen, Man Repeller’s Leandra Medine Debate the Future of Fashion

-------

92Y Future of Fashion

The “future of fashion” was the topic last night at the 92Y, where our editor in chief Dirk Standen hosted a panel discussion with Leandra Medine, of Man Repeller fame, and Lizzie Tisch and Kim Kassel, cofounders of Suite 1521, a luxury shopping destination that allows its members to meet up-and-coming designers like Mary Katrantzou, Rodarte, and Creatures of the Wind and shop their collections in an intimate setting. The evening’s wide-ranging discussion took in the pros and cons of fast fashion, the feasibility of wearable technology, and the ever-expanding influence of platforms like Instagram. “If the metric of success was once measured in dollars, in 2014 it’s measured in social following,” noted Medine, who was, it turned out, quoting her dad.

Perhaps the liveliest part of the conversation came after Standen suggested that women were still underrepresented in the ranks of designers and wondered when that would change. “I don’t feel like we have more men than women [designers]. I think we’re divided. But I do find that with men, the skirts are up to here, the pants are a little too long,” said Tisch. “And, well, what about if fabric is itchy? I don’t think [a male designer] cares, but if a woman puts it on, she could be like, ‘Oh, get this off me immediately.’”

The evening concluded with a question from the audience about a more immediate future concern: What one item did the panelists want for fall? Kassel said she was in the market for a cape, while Tisch was on the lookout for a great pair of boots. Medine, meanwhile, had something even more essential on her wish list: “A Vitamix.”

Who Needs a CFDA Swarovski Award When You’ve Got Bold-Faced Brand Ambassadors Like These?

-------

Hood by AirWith just four days to go until the 2014 CFDA Awards, the editors here at Style.com are placing bets on what Rihanna will be wearing on the red carpet and who will be taking home the big prizes. Many of the nominated designers already have a growing collection of CFDA trophies in their respective offices (Marc Jacobs clocks in at seven), so it’s the announcements of the three Swarovski Awards for Emerging Talent that we’re most eagerly anticipating. Whether they come out on top or not, all ten of these noms have already won the endorsements of influencers ranging from A-listers to industry insiders alike. Where would Shayne Oliver’s game-changing Hood by Air label be without A$AP Rocky’s early support? Or Rosie Assoulin without her pal Leandra Medine (and The Man Repeller’s 590,000-plus Instagram followers)? Our own award for best ambassador of up-and-coming brands goes to Lily Aldridge. At an amfAR event back in February, the model earned bonus points for rocking Assoulin’s ethereal, off-the-shoulder number in addition to a sculptural choker by jewelry nominee Marc Alary.

Here, a slideshow of tastemakers wearing designs by this year’s CFDA Swarovski nominees.

Happy Birthday, Dear Outnet: Celebrating Five Years of Designer Deals

-------

“Coulda, woulda, shoulda.” Thanks to The Outnet, that phrase rarely leaves our lips—when it comes to shopping regrets, at least. The designer discount site operated by Net-a-Porter brings you the best pieces from seasons past, meaning not only can you snag those Alexander Wang shoes you sorely missed out on, but you can get them for a bargain, too. To celebrate its fifth birthday, The Outnet is reissuing some of its top designers’ greatest hits—think Alexander McQueen’s patent bow clutch, J.W. Anderson’s paisley top, and Roland Mouret’s iconic wool dress. It also put together an adorable video, above, debuting exclusively here on Style.com. Chic shoppers like Alexandra Richards, Leigh Lezark, Garance Doré, Leandra Medine (who just filmed her own video series for Style.com), and Harley Viera-Newton discuss their favorite pieces while grooving to our new favorite jam, “Love Letters” by Metronomy. “Balmain for me is the Parisian brand,” Doré insists. As for Viera-Newton, “Oscar de la Renta is the dream” and Jason Wu is for “the confident, strong woman.” If you want to look “adorable,” Lezark suggests Preen by Thornton Bregazzi’s pastel pencil skirt. We’ll take it from the experts. The full collection will be available only at TheOutnet.com starting April 29—killer dance moves not included.
