Yea, Nay, Or Eh? Teen Angel

OK, so we’re not exactly teens, but our choice at last night’s Teen Choice Awards: Leighton Meester—more familiar as the usually demonic Blair Waldorf—looking positively angelic in white Emilio Pucci. The Gossip Girl star paired Peter Dundas’ embroidered minidress from Resort 2011 with Cathy Waterman jewels and pompom-covered Louboutin peep-toes. We’ll have to wait for tonight’s telecast to see if she nabs a surfboard trophy this year (she did last year, for Choice TV Actress in a Drama), but she does get our best-dressed nod. Even the too-cute-by-half shoe choice doesn’t throw off her vibe. (We’d prefer to see her in a flat, strappy sandal, like the ones Dundas showed the dress with in his lookbook.) What do you think? Do you like the white-on-white style, or would you prefer a little more color for the red carpet?

Carla Fêtes The Little Black Dress,
Daphne Vs. The U.S. Military, Gossip Girl‘s Latest Cameo Star, And More…

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, no stranger to the L.B.D., is patroness of an auction of them. She’ll be in New York this September for Phillips de Pury’s auction of commissioned dresses by Lanvin, Givenchy, Armani Privé, Vivienne Westwood, and more, the sale of which will benefit U.S. and French cancer charities. [WWD]

Speaking of good works, Diane von Furstenberg has pledged to donate half her fortune to charitable causes for the “Giving Pledge” initiative, founded by Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. The wrap dress just keeps on giving! [Vogue U.K.]

Daphne Guinness (pictured) is battling the military for first crack at a special fabric similar to an LCD screen, on which films could be projected. (She’d like to watch Sunset Boulevard on her chest; no word from the military, but we imagine they’d be more into Platoon.) [WSJ]

And finally, Robert Geller has some tips for guys looking to wear shorts: Keep them basic, keep them fitted, and keep them through the fall. [WSJ]

Yea, Nay, Or Eh? Leighton Meester’s Fringe Appeal

At the premiere of her new film Date Night last night, Leighton Meester wore one of the fringed stunners from Giambattista Valli’s well-received Spring 2010 collection. The front of her dress is a pretty standard Valli super-mini—his fans no less than his models have got legs for days—but the back is a full panel of suede fringe. We love the look, which Meester paired with chunky, multi-strap boots from the much-missed Phi. We happened to sit next to her stylist at a dinner last night, who confided that Meester cleaned up at the label’s 90-percent-off closing sale, where she’d copped the boots and much else besides. He also let drop that she’s scored a pretty sweet invitation to this year’s Costume Institute Gala. She’ll be at the table of one of the most sought-after designers in the business—young, ultracool, and (befitting the evening’s theme) all-American. What do you think? Does Meester make fringe work, or is this a look better left home on the range?

Gossip Girl‘s Secret Staple Revealed!

In his new book You Know You Want It, Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman goes boldly into some of the styling trade’s most intimate regions: “underwear and breasts and bras and things that can push and pull,” he explained last night at Henri Bendel, where Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester were co-hosting a launch party.

“It was a battle with the publisher to get the book to where I wanted it to be—very in-your-face. But that’s who I am,” Daman said, adding that at his Tyra taping earlier that day, the America’s Next Top Model girls had been all over it. What’s his secret? “The text is really big.”

Give Daman credit for practicing what he preaches—he had duct tape under his bowtie and tuxedo shirt—and for educating Jessica Szohr, among others. “I’m a girl from Wisconsin,” Szohr said. “Everything I know about fashion is because of Eric and Gossip Girl.” What she now knows—and the rest of the cast, too—may have much to do with that pushing and pulling. “Spanx are on the set every single day,” Daman dished. “Who’s wearing them, I’m not gonna tell you.”

The Eagle Has Landed In Times Square

We can almost hear Gossip Girl’s announcement now: “B. spotted checking out trucker hats at American Eagle in Times Square last night.” Not to worry, obsessed fans: Blair isn’t losing her trademark headbands—it was just actress Leighton Meester, at the shop’s opening party to belt her new single “Good Girls Go Bad.” (Onstage, she opted for a not-very-Waldorf outfit of black bra, open vest, streaked tights, and studded black Beatle boots.) It’s a new side to Meester, but one that found plenty of famous fans. “I actually really love it, don’t judge me!” Christian Siriano confessed. “I was just watching her video before I came.” AE’s new four-floor flagship, meanwhile, had plenty to interest shoppers, from stations to personalize sweatshirts and hats to an instant photo booth to great people-watching, with Adrian Grenier, models Hyoni Kang and Tiiu Kuik, and the evening’s DJ, Pete Wentz, all in attendance. Michelle Trachtenberg and Jessica Szohr also stopped by to support their cast mate but preferred to leave the pop-star moonlighting to Meester. “I would probably go more into movies that have musical elements in it as opposed to an album,” Trachtenberg said. “But I’d be too scared to do it all on my own.” Szohr was more doubtful. “If I started to sing or tried to do a music career, they would stop all music, all labels, all everything,” she said with a laugh. “I can’t sing to save my life.”
