Runway to Red Carpet: Fashion’s Award Shows and a Dressed-Up European Tour

-------

Jennifer LawrenceThis week was highlighted by a whirlwind European press tour for the cast of Hunger Games: Catching Fire, with photo calls and premieres in London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, and Oslo. Leading lady Jennifer Lawrence donned a bevy of gorgeous gowns to promote the second film of the trilogy. And while she mostly stuck to her red-carpet favorite, Dior (she is the face of the brand, after all), the actress did throw in a sprinkling of Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton, and Proenza Schouler. At Tuesday’s Berlin premiere, Lawrence wore a pale blue double-breasted coat-dress with printed guipure panels from Dior’s Resort ’14 range, which was a perfectly chic way to battle dropping temperatures (remember Leelee Sobieski’s black version last week? We sense a trend coming on). Elizabeth Banks also shined on the red carpet, choosing two shimmering Elie Saab Fall ’13 Couture dresses for the Berlin and Oslo premieres.

On Monday, the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards and Glamour‘s Women of the Year Awards brought out a stylish crowd. Lily Collins walked the red carpet at the WOTY Awards in a silk flesh-toned gown with a plunging neckline from the Julien Macdonald Spring ’14 runway, while Lady Gaga paired a pearl-adorned jacket with a cargo-pocketed pencil skirt and tall, pearl-encrusted platform shoes from Thom Browne’s asylum-themed Spring ’14 lineup. At the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Awards, Ciara wore her first Calvin Klein Collection ensemble, stepping out in a tweed wrap vest and cotton twill painter’s pants, with a jacket draped around her shoulders from the Spring ’14 runway. Considering the result, we have a feeling there’s more Calvin in the singer’s future.

Runway to Red Carpet: Black and White, but Not a Bit of Boring

-------

Lara Stone in Christopher KaneIt seems the stars picked up on Resort ’14′s black-and-white cues on the red carpet this week. Wednesday afternoon, Taylor Swift mixed and matched Elie Saab separates at a press event in L.A. She paired a white blouse with a sheer lace panel on the front from Fall ’13 with black pleated shorts from the Resort ’13 collection. On the opposite coast, funny girl Tina Fey exited Late Show With David Letterman wearing a black-and-white body-con Reed Krakoff dress with a printed bodice that was perforated at the shoulders.

Tuesday night featured an appearance from model and new mom Lara Stone, who helped hubby David Walliams celebrate his birthday in London while wearing a gray camo minidress from Christopher Kane’s Fall ’13 runway. While she’s technically wearing it on the sidewalk (left), we figure that, when you’re a supermodel, the world’s your red carpet.

That same night, Lily Collins continued to shine on the red carpet at the Berlin premiere of her film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, in a black Paper London crop top and floor-length Halston Heritage skirt, accented with a chunky gold-chain necklace and gold cuff. Lady Gaga had a very busy Monday, stepping out in four different outfits while traveling to and from several TV and radio appearances throughout the day to promote her new single, “Applause.” To start the day, Mother Monster arrived at ABC’s studio in New York for Good Morning America looking decidedly smart in a conservative (for Gaga, at least) black Balenciaga Resort ’14 frock. Her newly sophisticated style is a welcome change from the queen of sartorial shock. But fans of her more eccentric looks need not fret—she later changed into a white sculpted paper Mathieu Mirano ensemble for her on-screen appearance.

Runway to Red Carpet: A Saint Laurent Special and a Lady in Plaid

-------

Lily CollinsFrom the Teen Choice Awards to movie premieres, red-carpet-watchers had a lot to keep them busy this week. Saint Laurent was a popular choice with the weekend crowd, with several A-listers attending Saturday’s events in all-black looks by the Parisian powerhouse. At Disney’s D23 Expo, Angelina Jolie looked the epitome of casual elegance in a light wool sweater paired with tailored pants and ankle boots, all by Saint Laurent. That same evening, Rachel McAdams continued her About Time premiere circuit with a screening in Munich, walking the red carpet in a quietly sexy dress from Saint Laurent’s Resort ’14 offering. In L.A., Miley Cyrus played up her rocker image at the Teen Choice Awards, opting for a Saint Laurent see-through blouse and buckled-up skirt from Fall ’13‘s grunge-inspired collection.

Lily Collins (above) is quickly becoming one to watch on the red carpet, and had several strong sartorial picks this week. Among her best was a white cutout Cushnie et Ochs Resort ’14 sheath, which she wore to the L.A. premiere of her film The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones on Monday. The following evening, Diane Kruger put a ladies-who-lunch spin on tartan, donning a midi from Carven’s Resort ’14 collection at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Installation Luncheon. Finished off with barely there gray sandals and a side ponytail, the actress made plaid look effortlessly chic.

Paris men’s fashion week just got a little bigger. Band of Outsiders and Hardy Amies have both been confirmed to show for the first time during the June lineup. And in true Band of Outsiders fashion, the label’s designer, Scott Sternberg, has taken matters into his own hands, tapping one model to act as a living mannequin, who will show off all the looks during the course of a 60-hour period and live in a cardboard and wood plank box. Amies will show as part of the official calendar. [WWD]

A month after parting ways with former designer Manish Arora, Paco Rabanne has promoted its young studio design director, Lydia Maurer, to creative director of its womenswear. German-born Maurer, just 29, will present her first collection for the house during Paris fashion week in October and will also oversee accessories. [WWD]

Are Shaun White and Lily Collins a thing? Following Monday night’s CFDA Awards, rumors have been flying that the Olympic snowboarder is pursuing the young Mirror Mirror actress after a short stint with model Bar Refaeli. Reps for both had no comment. [Page Six]

Dita Von Teese Antiques In Antiques

-------

“I’m always looking for eclectic, interesting pieces that go in my style of house,” said Courteney Cox Arquette at the opening-night preview party of the L.A. Antiques Show. Though, she conceded, “I don’t even know what that is.” Whatever it may be, odds are good she’ll find something at the annual show. She was playing hostess as well as shopper last night, alongside Decades’ Cameron Silver, Dita Von Teese, Kimberly Brooks, and jeweler Jennifer Meyer, at the fête to kick off the four-day show. Her fellow browsers—Marcia Cross (in YSL), Lily Collins, and Chris Klein among them—braved the unseasonable cold to shop for a cause. (The evening raised money for the L.A. arts organization P.S. ARTS, which serves 12,000 students.) Some were on the hunt for specifics: Amber Valletta (in Jenni Kayne) just remodeled her home and was after a dining room table, some chairs, and a desk. Others eyes turned to the fashions. “I didn’t think I’d be wearing fur at this time of year,” said Silver, in a custom Funtastic Furs jacket and Jaspare python tie. Did it lack pockets? “I left my credit card in the car,” he admitted. “But I’m good for it.” His friend Dita Von Teese opted for a vintage, full-skirted dress.”I figured, why would I wear something new to an antiques gala?” she said. “The word ‘gala’ doesn’t mean anything in California, but I don’t care.”
