Girls To Watch—Breakthrough Model Predictions For Spring 2013

-------

If you’ve been walking around Soho this week, you’ve probably noticed the mob of lanky girls clad in black, clutching portfolios, and rushing from one open call or fitting to the next. Casting director Andrew Weir (who works with Thakoon, Viktor & Rolf, and Jen Kao) estimates there are over 1,000 models in town for NYFW, and predicted that out of the hundreds of fresh faces he’s seen the past few days, there are “maybe a handful of rookies with the potential to actually break through.” Of the brand-spanking-new girls, Weir called out Russian beauty Lena Lomako (Women) and Caroline F. (Elite Management), who he says “looks perfect for Celine.” We’ve got our eyes on several girls, too. Icy Dutch blonde Stef Van Der Laan (pictured, top right) and Grace Mahary (pictured, top left), who previously starred in a Trey Songz music video. Both made a splash as exclusives on the Givenchy Fall runway, then went on to rack up key Couture appearances in July (Van Der Laan walked Chanel and Atelier Versace, while Mahary popped up at Givenchy again). We wouldn’t be surprised to see each of them do upwards of 50 shows this time around. Others on our radar include 18-year-old South Carolina native Madison Headrick (pictured, bottom right), who made her catwalk debut at Prada, then turned up in the label’s latest ad campaign, and Margita Zuchova (pictured, bottom left), who recently did the Alexander McQueen Resort lookbook and stalked the Dior Couture catwalk. Still, you can never pinpoint just who is going to blast off until the shows get under way, so check back in for our model updates at the end of each city’s fashion week.

Chess To Impress: Steven Meisel Shoots Prada’s Fall 2012 Campaign Video

-------

Continuing with Miuccia Prada’s “virtual princess” theme from her Fall 2012 show, Steven Miesel shot the ad campaign as a fantastical chess game. Here’s your first look at the accompanying campaign video, featuring models Vanessa Axente, Magdalena Frackowiak, Madison Headrick, Elza Luijendijk, Iselin Steiro, and Anne Vyalitsyna. Check, mate. The video debuts on Style.com, above.

Which Models Are Making The Grade For Resort?

-------

For most models, the Spring and Fall runways are the battlegrounds where all the glory is earned, so to speak. But as we’ve witnessed over the past few weeks with Resort, the pre-collections are becoming increasingly important, particularly for those fresh faces looking to sustain momentum (and possibly nab ad campaigns) going into their sophomore seasons.

By the books, Ava Smith (pictured, left) and Mackenzie Drazan (pictured, right), who both had breakout Fall ’12 seasons, are Resort’s top contenders. So far, Drazan has posed for six top-tier lookbooks including Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Richard Chai, and Bottega Veneta, and turned up on the Salvatore Ferragamo catwalk at the Louvre. On her end, Smith has caught the eye of downtown designers like Altuzarra, Derek Lam, and Yigal Azrouël, and walked for Chanel, Calvin Klein, and Ferragamo as well.

Naturally, veterans like Julia Nobis (who was Fall’s top catwalker with 72 shows under her belt) and Caroline Brasch Nielsen have been getting plenty of work this season, too. Both did Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta, and a slew of others. As for our favorite Resort highlight, well, that’s a tie between androgynous nineties supermodel Erin O’Connor‘s surprise appearance in the Zac Posen lookbook and spotting Madison Headrick (a Prada runway exclusive back in February) in the Altuzarra and Donna Karan lineups. Just this week, Headrick landed the coveted Prada campaign shot by Steven Meisel, and we have a hunch we’re going to be seeing a lot more of her come Spring.

Prada’s Princesses

-------

Is it fantasy or reality? For Prada’s Fall ’12 campaign, Steven Meisel photographed Miuccia Prada’s “virtual princesses,” models Iselin Steiro, Madison Headrick, Elza Luijendijk, and Vanessa Axente, in a futurist enclosure and shifted camera angles to create playful illusions. With their strong gazes, dip-dyed hair, and embellished, geometric-print clothes, these fashion avatars look fit for a video game. Here, Style.com has an exclusive look at the new campaign.
