Juice, Fast: Orange Emerges as the Surprise Color Trend of the Moment

Now Trending: OrangePantone may have named Radiant Orchid—a dusty magenta—its color of the year for 2014, but judging from the latest Pre-Fall lineups, designers beg to differ. The hue that’s cropped up time and time again is orange, from true, juicy shades to red-tinged bricks and rusts. Pastel outerwear was all the rage in 2013, but now Narciso Rodriguez, Joseph Altuzarra, and Gucci’s Frida Giannini have pumped things up with tailored coats in spicy shades. Proenza Schouler added fire to the tonal trend with wrap dresses and separates done in paprika-colored buttery suede. Bottega Veneta’s Tomas Maier did his part, too, showing a cozy Creamsicle sweater and complementary tangerine trousers (and on It redhead Magdalena Jasek, no less). A Seductive Resort Short, Courtesy of Altuzarra

Joseph Altuzarra debuted his romantic Resort ’14 collection earlier this month, and while shooting his lookbook, he and photographer Simon Cave had a thought. “We came across the idea of wanting to make something that was atmospheric and more of a visual manifestation of the Altuzarra woman,” the pair told Style.com. Enter Altuzarra’s heady black-and-white Resort ’14 film, which, styled by Vanessa Traina and Melanie Huynh, stars models Magdalena Jasek, Manuela Frey, and Kayley Chabot. Directed and set to some moody beats by Cave, the short sees its heroines dressed up in pieces that, as Altuzarra explains, “were very strong in silhouette and details. We wanted to create something that was very classic in mood, and highlight the masculine and feminine contrasts.” Blindfolds and fluttering veils of sheer black and white chiffon lend an air of mystery to the spot that, we have to admit, is seriously sexy. “A large part of the collection was about exploring the idea of seduction and sensuality, with lace details and lingerie elements in many of the pieces,” said Altuzarra. “The blindfolds and veils were an extension of this concept of seduction and provocation.” Catch the sultry film’s debut above, exclusively on Style.com.

Models In Demand: Pre-Fall’s Top New Faces

New models’ careers are often made on the runways, but posing for pre-fall lookbooks can really build up a girl’s momentum. Several fresh faces in particular have been making waves this season. First up is Tilda Lindstam, whose star continues to rise. Casting directors’ favorite Swede-of-the-moment walked down the runway at Oscar de la Renta and Calvin Klein, and also appeared in lookbooks for A-list labels like Givenchy, Acne and Prabal Gurung. Meanwhile, pouty French beauty Marine Deleeuw, one of Spring’s top ten catwalk rookies, showed off her editorial chops at Cßline, Lanvin, Narciso Rodriguez, Rag & Bone, Donna Karan, and Barbara Bui. Another up-and-comer who’s made an impact over the past several weeks is redhead Magdalena Jasek. She recently scored the Louis Vuitton Spring campaign, walked in Calvin Klein’s show, and turned up on the pages of lookbooks for Cßline, Thakoon Addition, and Escada. Finally, we can’t get enough of Valery Kaufman. The model debuted at Alexander Wang’s Spring ’12 show, logged an impressive number of Spring ’13 runways, and really hit her stride during pre-fall, posing for 3.1 Phillip Lim, Narciso Rodriguez, and Carven. Be sure to keep an eye out for these ladies on the Fall ’13 catwalks—the shows start February 7.

Paris Fashion Week’s Queen Bees

After three cities and hundreds of shows, Paris fashion week is where the most influential designers crystallize the season’s message and the major models stalk the runways. Miuccia Prada certainly delivered on the latter yesterday with arguably the best cast we’ve seen this month at Miu Miu. The lineup was bookended by Raquel Zimmermann, who opened, and closer Karen Elson. In the mix were plenty of other catwalk veterans including Malgosia Bela, Iselin Steiro, Jessica Stam, Hilary Rhoda, Delfine Bafort, and Diana Dondoe. It was a refreshing cap to a season that, for the most part, lacked big-name models. On that note, Miu Miu also illuminated some of the top newcomers including Irina Kravchenko, Marine Deleeuw, Esther Heesch, and Manon Leloup (pictured), who each had impressive freshman seasons. We’ve had our eye on Kravchenko since she opened Alexander Wang during NYFW, and the edgy redhead truly blasted off in the City of Light, where she opened Haider Ackermann, Viktor & Rolf, and Sacai and also walked Balenciaga, Givenchy, and Valentino. Meanwhile, Deleeuw’s Paris highlights included Céline, Balenciaga, Dior, and Chanel—out of all the fresh faces, Deleeuw won the numbers game with 36 shows total. After skipping New York and London, Heesch kept the momentum from her Prada debut going with turns on top Paris runways, including Valentino (which she opened), Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Céline, Chanel, Chloé, and Dries Van Noten. For her part, Leloup did many of those same top shows (15 total in Paris), and both opened and closed Nina Ricci.

Saint Laurent was another highly anticipated moment that delivered on noteworthy newbies. Grace Mahary closed the show and also did Balenciaga, Givenchy (where she was an exclusive last season), Balmain, and Isabel Marant earlier in the week. Hedi Slimane also plucked Kristen McMenamy’s daughter Lily as an exclusive, and she turned up at Chanel the next day. Others at SL included Juliana Schurig, who built upon her success from the first three weeks in Paris, walking Lanvin, Giambattista Valli, and Alexander McQueen, among others; Magdalena Jasek, who opened Céline and did Louis Vuitton, Valentino, and Viktor & Rolf; and Alexandra Martynova, who we first saw as a Calvin Klein exclusive and really capitalized on her androgynous appeal in Paris, closing Dior and also showing up at Rick Owens and Alexander McQueen, among others. Overall, it was a season full of promising newcomers who will be top contenders for the season’s forthcoming ad campaigns.
