Every season, Stefano Pilati extends the YSL vision by sending it out farther than the end of the runway. With his Manifesto, the Saint Laurent look gets all the way to the street. Starting this Tuesday, September 14, the Manifesto—an extended lookbook starring Daria Werbowy packaged in a Pilati-designed bag (below)—hits the streets of New York, where they’ll be distributed to 2,000 passersby. (Following that, they’ll hit Paris, London, Milan, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and for the first time, Beirut, on September 18.) Inez and Vinoodh shot both the lookbook and the accompanying teaser video, debuting exclusively on Style.com. If you’ve ever wanted to watch Daria slowly descend some stairs (and, hey, who hasn’t?), today’s your lucky day. The short has a hypnotic, trippy elegance—think Last Year in Marienbad with faster costume changes.
YSL-philes may be lamenting that the new Chyc won’t arrive in time for fashion week, but here’s your first look at a bag that will: It’s Stefano Pilati’s tote for the sixth YSL Manifesto, which arrives in New York next Tuesday, February 16. Two thousand of them will be handed out—free of charge—in New York, followed by similar drops in Paris, London, Milan, Tokyo, Hong Kong, and, for the first time, Berlin. The newspaper-sized Manifesto inside has all the Inez and Vinoodh shots of Natalia Vodianova in the Spring 2010 collection, but we’re just as into the pixelated, strawberry-printed bag itself. Expect to see more than a few, crammed with invites, bottled water, and all the other fashion week sundries, on your trips from Milk to the tents.

It’s that time of year again, when the house of YSL gears up to pull on its patch-pocketed revolutionary garb and issue its Manifesto to the masses on city corners ’round the globe—Paris, New York, London, Tokyo, Milan, and Hong Kong. It’s the fourth time that Casa Pilati is doing this little promotion—which usually involves a broadsheet advert (this one shot starring Claudia Schiffer and shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin) and a limited-edition logoed tote. One fun piece of news: this season’s handout will have stickers. Also, for Spring 2009, Manifesto Day coincides with Valentine’s—an overlap that’s resulting in another highly coveted little item: a heart-shaped USB key. The official word from YSL is that the USB key encourages the viral exchange of information and generally fits into the promotion’s “democratic foundation.” That’s all well and good, but this techy little trinket has given me an acute (and probably unrevolutionary) case of I-Want-It-itis. But alas, I probably won’t have time on February 14, also the second day of New York fashion week, to be one of those lucky 2,000 passersby. Sigh.
