Balmain Gets Social; Ryan McGinley On His Exhibitions, Opening Tonight; Outtakes From Marilyn Monroe’s Last On-Set Photo Shoot, And More…
Balmain wants to be your friend. The French brand launched Facebook and Twitter accounts today in an effort to be less “closed to the consumer,” according to Balmain CEO Emmanuel Diemoz. The brand’s 25-year-old creative director, Olivier Rousteing, tells WWD, “It’s an experience. I will reply, and be the first to check it and see if there are a lot of ‘likes.’ ” [WWD]

CNNCTD+, the creative agency run by DJ Roman Grandinetti and Bibi Cornejo Borthwick (the daughter of designer Maria Cornejo), has commissioned 100 of its favorite people to record bits and pieces of their daily lives for a special NYC audio diary. Participants include the likes of Cindy Sherman, Santigold, and André Saraiva, who chose to recite French poetry on girlfriend Annabelle Dexter-Jones’ voicemail. Awwww. [Nowness]
Artist Ryan McGinley is set to open dual exhibitions, Animals and Grids, tonight at the two NYC Team Gallery locations. If it’s anything like his last opening (“3,000 people showed and the police shut it down,” he says), then it’s sure to be a rock star affair. During an interview with the team at Opening Ceremony, he admitted, “I don’t consider myself a rock star but I take advice from them. Mick Jagger once told me, ‘Anything worth doing is worth overdoing.’ ” Wise words. [OC Blog]
Vanity Fair‘s June issue will certainly not go unnoticed. The magazine features outtakes of Marilyn Monroe’s last on-set photo shoot with photographer Lawrence Schiller, who photographed the bombshell in the nude, and also reveals a strong rivalry between Monroe and the late Elizabeth Taylor. Following the CFDA and eBay’s first collaboration on one-of-a-kind designer tote bags promoting anti-counterfeiting, the two have partnered up once more for another “You Can’t Fake Fashion” campaign. After the first round of bags, designed by labels including Rodarte, The Row, and Rebecca Minkoff, sold out within hours, over 75 designers signed on to create a bag this time around. For good reason—it’s a cause very close to the designers’ hearts.
“Authenticity is a big part of what we do,” Billy Reid, who is on the roster of participating designers along with Maria Cornejo, Thom Browne, Tory Burch, and Prabal Gurung, tells Style.com. “We strive to make the best-quality goods that we can and we take a lot of pride in our work, so we are 100 percent behind supporting the CFDA and our fellow designers through You Can’t Fake Fashion.”

Coach’s latest trump card? Hugo Guinness. To celebrate its recent teamwork with the British linocut artist, the brand threw a casino-themed bash at the Jane Hotel ballroom last night, complete with a blackjack table, an illusionist, and a house-of-cards builder—a nod to the fact that the collaboration, in addition to leather goods, includes a very covetable deck of hand-drawn Coach playing cards. Guinness quietly occupied a banquette area while Maria Cornejo chatted with friends nearby and Lisa Marie Fernandez tried her luck at roulette. (She only recently got the bug, Fernandez said: “I just got back from the Chanel party in Las Vegas and I won big!”)
For the collaboration, which makes use of both original and archival images, Guinness explained that he’d briefly given up his normal routine of working at home in Brooklyn in order to take meetings at Coach’s Madison Avenue headquarters. Office life, he confessed, seems like a world apart. “It’s very different, isn’t it? There’s a whole protocol there—people come in, and then they disappear again, and you don’t know why they’ve come in,” he said. “It’s just weird, it’s a different world.” But it may start to feel familiar soon enough—Guinness and the brand are already thinking about doing a second project, potentially for the holiday season.
In 2011, vibrant colors made their bold return to the runways. While the Spring ’12 and pre-fall collections have shown no sign of the color trend disappearing, black and white is popping up in a big way. Designers including Monique Lhuillier, Maria Cornejo, and Phillip Lim all worked the classic color combo into their pre-fall collections. Karl Lagerfeld even managed to make black and white looks a centerpiece of his Indian-inspired Chanel presentation. (Black and white might be quintessentially Coco, but in Bombay, that’s not so much the case.) As pre-fall collections continue to roll out, we’ll be watching to see if the trend carries on.
