Following the CFDA and eBay’s first collaboration on one-of-a-kind designer tote bags promoting anti-counterfeiting, the two have partnered up once more for another “You Can’t Fake Fashion” campaign. After the first round of bags, designed by labels including Rodarte, The Row, and Rebecca Minkoff, sold out within hours, over 75 designers signed on to create a bag this time around. For good reason—it’s a cause very close to the designers’ hearts.
“Authenticity is a big part of what we do,” Billy Reid, who is on the roster of participating designers along with Maria Cornejo, Thom Browne, Tory Burch, and Prabal Gurung, tells Style.com. “We strive to make the best-quality goods that we can and we take a lot of pride in our work, so we are 100 percent behind supporting the CFDA and our fellow designers through You Can’t Fake Fashion.”
The bags ($200 for the customized totes, $45 for the standard) go on sale exclusively on eBay March 20, with all proceeds going to the CFDA. Above, an exclusive first look at one of the new bags from Milly. We suggest you order fast.
Coach’s latest trump card? Hugo Guinness. To celebrate its recent teamwork with the British linocut artist, the brand threw a casino-themed bash at the Jane Hotel ballroom last night, complete with a blackjack table, an illusionist, and a house-of-cards builder—a nod to the fact that the collaboration, in addition to leather goods, includes a very covetable deck of hand-drawn Coach playing cards. Guinness quietly occupied a banquette area while Maria Cornejo chatted with friends nearby and Lisa Marie Fernandez tried her luck at roulette. (She only recently got the bug, Fernandez said: “I just got back from the Chanel party in Las Vegas and I won big!”)
For the collaboration, which makes use of both original and archival images, Guinness explained that he’d briefly given up his normal routine of working at home in Brooklyn in order to take meetings at Coach’s Madison Avenue headquarters. Office life, he confessed, seems like a world apart. “It’s very different, isn’t it? There’s a whole protocol there—people come in, and then they disappear again, and you don’t know why they’ve come in,” he said. “It’s just weird, it’s a different world.” But it may start to feel familiar soon enough—Guinness and the brand are already thinking about doing a second project, potentially for the holiday season.
In 2011, vibrant colors made their bold return to the runways. While the Spring ’12 and pre-fall collections have shown no sign of the color trend disappearing, black and white is popping up in a big way. Designers including Monique Lhuillier, Maria Cornejo, and Phillip Lim all worked the classic color combo into their pre-fall collections. Karl Lagerfeld even managed to make black and white looks a centerpiece of his Indian-inspired Chanel presentation. (Black and white might be quintessentially Coco, but in Bombay, that’s not so much the case.) As pre-fall collections continue to roll out, we’ll be watching to see if the trend carries on.
Better known are its compatriots Black Friday (11/25) and Cyber Monday (11/28), the two bookends that begin the holiday-shopping season. But American Express’ Small Business Saturday (11/26), which returns for its second iteration this year to bring awareness (and hopefully, customers) to local businesses, may be the weekend’s best shopping bet. American Express is offering Rewards Points to its customers who shop small on Saturday; and many retailers are offering promotions of their own to sweeten the deal. One is Maria Cornejo, who is planning a gift for those who shake off the post-Thanksgiving haze to make it into one of her stores in New York or L.A. The designer spoke with Style.com about the challenges and rewards of staying small.
How important is it to you to be a small business?
It’s important for me, for my own creativity, to have our own point of view in the whole market. Being a small business, you’re offering a different a point of view that hasn’t been offered everywhere else. Having a so-called small business allows us to move quickly and respond to clients and what they need, rather than by trends. When things get too homogenized, everything [becomes] very corporate. You can find the same store in every major capital in the world.
By contrast, your three Zero stores don’t follow that corporate-store model.
Every [Zero] store looks different. The same elements are at play, but it’s not a standard shop-fit, like corporate companies have. It’s much more about fitting the area and having something that’s more personal to that space. Right now, people want a more personal experience, rather than something that looks…too standardized, especially our clientele. We compete by being more niche and more special. That’s our standpoint in the whole fashion business. To be quite honest, there’s 20 million collections out there—how do you differentiate yourself right now?
