They Wish They All Could Be California Artists

New York tends to think of itself as the art capital of the U.S. That it may be—but it’s getting a little competition from Los Angeles, which, not too long ago, poached one of NYC’s most respected gallerists, Jeffrey Deitch, to direct its Museum of Contemporary Art. And for his new show at MOCA, The Artist’s Museum, he’s drawing on L.A.’s own resources—namely, the work of area artists, both established and emerging. Longtime art supporters Lubov and Max Azria hosted a fête for the new show (set to run through January) last night at their L.A. home. “I think for a long time MOCA has been pushed to the side. But if you look at the Whitney Biennial, so many of those artists are from California,” Lubov explained. “California always has something different to say than New York, so to see so many of the newer and established artists together—and in my own home—is incredible.”

The crowd included fashionable Angelenas, including transplanted New Yorkers like Eva Amurri and Jessica Joffe, as well as artists Barbara Kruger, Kenny Scharf, and Bill Viola. “Los Angeles is a creative capital, and so this is where a lot of the ambitious and creative people want to be,” Deitch said of the art/fashion overlap (both at the party and at the show, which is sponsored by BCBG). “What’s so exciting is that the creative people in these different fields are now connecting with one another.”

Miley Cyrus and Max Azria are the latest celebrity and designer couple to tie the knot, and they’ll be consummating their relationship at Wal-Mart. The co-designed junior line will be available in August; we can only hope bandage dresses for tweens are not part of the deal. [WWD]

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, who’s making nude-photo headlines again as more au naturel shots of her hit the auction block, has trounced the Queen in this year’s highly anticipated “best hat wearer” contest. This woman is admirably versatile. [The Telegraph]

Max Azria: Dance, Drape, Dinner

Instead of throwing a big, loud party where nobody can hear anybody else over the tracks some celebrity DJ is blasting, designer Max Azria and his wife/creative designer, Lubov, held a post collections sit-down dinner at Mr. Chow. At the head table sat Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin, Gossip Girl star Michelle Trachtenberg, and lovely Zoe Saldana, who is to play the character of Commander Uhura in next year’s Star Trek movie. “I’ve been working nonstop for the last two years with James Cameron and J.J. Abrams and they finally gave me a break so my agent could bring me here to fashion week and I could lend support to fellow artists in a different field other than Hollywood,” she said. Lubov Azria said she’d also been struck by some pan-artistic inspiration for this season’s Max Azria collection: Martha Graham. “I used to dance ballet with the Kirov,” she reminded us. “So dance has always been a part of my life and the movement of clothes.” She said her design team started by watching footage of the company in motion before moving on to a color palette and yards of fabric. “And then we started draping like mad!”
