Blasblog: Life’s A Beach At Bergdorf’s

-------

The ocean was on people’s minds last night at the Bergdorf Goodman men’s store on Fifth Avenue. And not just because a week’s worth of rain finally let up, or because Michael Bastian’s collection of beach-y summer clothing was on the mannequins and the images from Matt Albiani’s new book Lifeguard on Duty were on display. No, people were thinking swimsuits because the third-floor party was as hot as July. “This is like a fifties swimsuit under here,” Bastian’s publicist Eugenia Gonzalez Ruiz-Olloqui explained, tugging on a floral strap that was exposed under her mini muumuu (I have never wanted to do drag in my life, but I would’ve killed someone for a cotton caftan at that moment). As the designer’s sweaty posse fanned out into other parts of the store, Bastian explained that the event came together by accident: Lifeguards were a major reference point for his Spring line, but he had no idea that Albiani had spent three years putting together a book chronicling the looks of CPR-trained beach hunks. A friend introduced them recently, and they thought it was mutually beneficial to team up. Turns out it was quite a happy coincidence: “This has been my best-selling collection ever,” said Bastian, who will hit L.A. with Albiani later this month. “So I’m either going to have to do lifeguards again next season, or follow Matt around and see what book he’s doing next.”

HOT! HOT! HOT!

-------

There’s nothing like a sodden week in spring to make a city dweller dream of the beach. The sun. The surf. The salt air. The lifeguards. The appeal of those bronzed, zinc-nosed gods of the shoreline is one photographer Matt Albiani and designer Michael Bastian understand implicitly. Albiani has spent the past four years shooting lifeguards all across America, from Oahu to Nantucket, photos that are now collected in his new book Lifeguard on Duty. Coincidentally, Albiani was wrapping up work on the book just as Bastian was seizing a lifeguard inspiration for his Spring ’09 menswear collection. Great minds think alike, apparently—and now Bastian and Albiani have joined forces, launching Lifeguard on Duty with an event at Bergdorf Goodman’s men’s shop this evening. (Later this month, the duo will be toasting the tome at the Los Angeles boutique Confederacy.) Here, Bastian and Albiani talk to Style.com about Baywatch, California dreams, and beauty and the beach.

Most people hear the word “lifeguard” and immediately think: Baywatch. Suffice it to say, that’s not the vibe either of you are conjuring.

Michael Bastian: Well, we all grew up watching Baywatch, it’s true. But my whole lifeguard fixation started with the seventies movie Lifeguard, with Parker Stevenson. It’s about a college kid who works as a lifeguard over the summer…Matt, that was kind of your experience, right?

fashion forward, on your screen now

-------

Bastian and Nolan and Varvatos, oh my! An impressive roster of designers will be showing off their creations during the second annual Fashion Forward party at Skylight Studios on November 10th. A salute to the industry’s ongoing commitment to fighting HIV/AIDS, the night will not only feature a Bryant Park-worthy fashion show, but also a live and silent auction hosted by Tim “Make It Work” Gunn. To whip up a little pre-event buzz, host GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis) produced a 30-second commercial featuring beautiful people (read: models) wearing stylish duds and shimmying to vaguely Latin techno beats. Starting this week, the spot will air on WNBC. But you can check it out here first.
