Yesterday at the CFDA’s offices in Nolita, seventeen CFDA jewelry designers gathered for the first time to show their new works collectively to buyers, editors, and industry influencers. “Jewelry is such a distinct category in fashion—it stands alone—and it’s a growing category in our membership,” explained CFDA CEO Steven Kolb. “So the idea was to really celebrate that specialness and the members who are jewelry designers.”
Among the featured designers were Mimi So, who used natural, unrefined sapphires to create Portofino-inspired, deep-aquamarine-colored wares (above, top left); Lisa Salzer of Lulu Frost (above, top right), who told us, “Our S/S collection is inspired by the Sofia Coppola-[directed] Marie Antoinette movie. The collection is so girly, but it also has a little bit of punk with a neon twist.”; and Mish Tworkowski of Mish (above, bottom right). “These are really wonderful, rare special stones—and baroque pearls and gold cuffs in yellow gold with brown diamonds,” said the latter of his new pieces.
Simon Alcantara (above, bottom left), a CFDA jewelry member, teamed up with jewelry consultant Talya Cousins to spearhead the initiative. “These are people I’ve known for years,” said Alcantara of his fellow presenting members. “We help and support each other. I feel like together we’re a strong team. And the jewelry membership—I just recently realized—is like 25 percent of the CFDA and growing. So it’s the right time.”
