The DVF Wrap Dress, Now In Mini Sizes

-------

After a busy New York fashion week schedule, Diane von Furstenberg chose Los Angeles for the worldwide launch of her new GapKids + DVF collection for girls. “Isn’t this fun?” the designer enthused, surveying the crowd of hot Hollywood moms, their tots, and the requisite fashion fanfare that gathered to toast her collaboration with the retailer, which launches stateside March 15 (worldwide March 28). Paring down her iconic wrap dresses into pint sizes and drawing upon her signature vivid prints and bold palette, the capsule collection seems a natural extension of the DVF brand. “I wanted it to have the essence of DVF, and I wanted every design to be comfortable and optimistic,” the designer explained. Pitch-perfect for spring, the line boasts functionality and wearability where it matters most. “It’s fun, but at the same time it can all work together. I wanted something that the mothers would like, but more importantly, really practical that the kids would really feel comfortable in.” And judging by the likes of Molly Sims, Milla Jovovich, and Jessica Capshaw in attendance, she seems to have found that enviable balance.

Shoe designer Stuart Weitzman was treated to a surprise 70th birthday bash in New York Tuesday night at the Empire Hotel lobby bar. Of course, his cake was in the shape of a shoe box. We can only hope the center didn’t taste like leather, or stiletto. [Page Six]

Ed Westwick Hits Fashion Shows But Doesn’t Care What A Girl Spends On Clothes

-------

Fashionistas of the future converged in Chelsea on Thursday night. To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Express invited a mostly teenage audience to a runway show and party hosted by Chanel Iman, Caroline Trentini, Elettra Wiedemann, and Ed Westwick, in conjunction with Vogue magazine. “They’re not messing around,” Molly Sims noted as she took a seat near 90210‘s AnnaLynne McCord. “A fashion show and a live concert? They didn’t do that when I was a teenager.”

Yes, the world’s young women seem much more fashion savvy than they once were (we can thank the Internet for that), but things haven’t changed all that much—two of the runway models were doing their social studies homework backstage. After the show and VV Brown’s performance, we caught up with Westwick to talk style. “I don’t think it matters how much a girl spends on her clothes,” he said. “It’s about the way she carries herself.”

Gwyneth Paltrow: The Next Celebrity Designer?

-------

Valentino Garavani’s “farewell tour” has been as epic as anything Barbra Streisand could dream up, and judging by last night’s DVD signing of Valentino: The Last Emperor, the retired designer is still pulling in the crowds. Daphne Guinness, Molly Sims, Michelle Trachtenberg, Zac Posen, and Anja Rubik all turned out to see Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti at a party hosted by Gwyneth Paltrow and accessories designer Bruce Hoeksema at the latter’s posh VBH digs on Madison Avenue.

In a immaculate pinstripe suit, Valentino seemed to enjoy catching up with the fashion set, but now that he’s had a taste of film, could a director’s move be on the horizon? The tanned fashion icon waved off the idea of going behind the camera. “I just enjoy my life now. I love walking my dogs. I took a walk with them today. For every step I take, they take two!” As for Matt Tyrnauer’s documentary, Paltrow and Hoeksema agreed that it was spot-on. “It really shows the love, the complication and fire, and also creativity,” the actress said. The evening raised $4,270 from sales of the autographed DVDs for the Robin Hood Foundation, where she is a board member. Paltrow is fresh off a collaboration with Zoe Tee’s for another charitable cause, so perhaps it’ll be she who takes up a new career and tries the designer reins? “Maybe,” the actress said. “I never say never.”

Marc And Lorenzo Nuptials Update, Dolce On The Cheap, And More…

-------

Of all the cute couples at the CFDAs last night (Jason Wu and Diane Kruger, Kirsten Dunst and the Mulleavys, Molly Sims and Marilyn Monroe), Lorenzo Martone and Marc Jacobs were probably the cutest. Could they be in their honeymoon phase? Not yet. Despite rumors to the contrary, the two have yet to tie the knot, so your invite actually could still be in the mail. [WWD]

Dolce & Gabbana are cutting prices, which means their clothes are slightly less bank-breaking than they were before. For spring, jeans go for $450 a pair, while a silk tulle party dress will cost you $3,589. Sweet gesture, guys. [WWD]

The chaos at Interview continues: The magazine is suing former co-editorial director Glenn O’Brien, who either quit or was fired, depending on who you ask. [WWD]
