Runway to Red Carpet: Bright Hues With an All-Black Streak

-------

RihannaWhile we’ve been seeing a recent surge in color thanks to the warmer weather, a handful of stars chose classic all-black ensembles for their red-carpet appearances this week. On Saturday, Anne Hathaway attended A Night Under the Stars at Nickelodeon Animation Studio in L.A. in a black vintage Chanel blouse printed with “No Smoking” in several languages over a black maxi skirt. The same night, Leslie Mann took to the red carpet in Saint Laurent’s Spring ’14 tuxedo-inspired jumpsuit at the American Comedy Awards in New York. On Thursday, Rihanna layered a Givenchy leather biker jacket over a sheer black lace gown from the Fall ’08 Haute Couture runway for the iHeartRadio Music Awards, where she picked up the trophy for Artist of the Year.

Despite the black streak, there was still plenty of color. Kiernan Shipka donned a bold blue Prabal Gurung Pre-Fall ’14 frock adorned with beads and feathers on the skirt for the premiere of God’s Pocket at LACMA on Thursday in L.A. In Houston, Naomi Watts chose an equally vivid hue, stepping out in a sunny yellow Preen Pre-Fall ’14 floral dévoré dress for a gala to celebrate the BVLGARI: 130 Years of Masterpieces exhibition launch.

Runway to Red Carpet: Pre-Oscar Fetes and a Well-Heeled Actress-Turned-Entrepreneur

-------

LupitaAs the Oscar countdown draws to a close, the celebrity set kept busy this week with a multitude of parties, premieres, and the final award show leading up to the season’s main event. For Saturday’s NAACP Image Awards in Hollywood, Lupita Nyong’o chose a plunging earth-toned Givenchy dress, a red-carpet first for her, from the Pre-Fall ’14 lineup. Nyong’o added another trophy to her growing collection that evening, taking home the statue for Outstanding Supporting Actress. A radiant Kerry Washington accepted several awards, including Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for her role on Scandal, in a custom navy and peach silk Thakoon gown.

On Tuesday, Naomi Watts hosted Bulgari’s pre-Oscar fete that brought out stars such as Kate Hudson, Olivia Munn, and Dianna Agron to celebrate “Decades of Glamour” in Hollywood. Watts chose a look fresh off the Fall ’14 runway: Altuzarra’s black column with magenta and orange accents.

The famously well-heeled Sarah Jessica Parker turned her love of footwear into more than a hobby when she launched her namesake SJP Collection this week. On Wednesday, the actress feted the opening of her Nordstrom pop-up shop in New York, stepping out in a pale pink Valentino frock hemmed with black lace, paired with green sandals from her own collection, which launches today.

Runway to Red Carpet: Awards Season Fever

-------

Lupita Nyong'oAwards Season is officially in full swing. Lupita, Amy, Emma, and Cate stole the show at Sunday’s Golden Globes, but plenty of other A-listers had their time in the spotlight on the busy party circuit. On Saturday, Sandra Bullock broke red-carpet convention by pairing a white T-shirt etched with iconic edifices with an emerald pencil skirt from Burberry’s fresh Pre-Fall ’14 offering for the BAFTA Los Angeles 2014 Awards Season Tea Party in Beverly Hills. The same day, Naomi Watts took a turn on the red carpet for the G’Day USA Black Tie Gala in an icy blue silk satin Spring ’14 Marchesa gown.

After the Globes, many stars slipped out of their red-carpet wares and into equally glamorous party frocks for some post-ceremony revelry. InStyle and Warner Bros. cohosted a bash that saw notables like Hailee Steinfeld, Emma Watson, and Miranda Kerr slink down the red carpet in their sartorial best. Diane Kruger, who was absent on the Globe’s red carpet, turned up in a black Pre-Fall ’14 Antonio Berardi gown sprinkled with gold crystals.

Silver-screen newcomers Lupita Nyong’o and Adèle Exarchopoulos each took home trophies at Thursday night’s Critics’ Choice Movie Awards. And they impressed on the red carpet, too. Nyong’o, who has topped countless Best Dressed lists the last few months, donned a statuesque, custom ivory silk crepe bandeau dress from Calvin Klein Collection (she also wore a printed Mary Katrantzou number to the DuJour magazine party this week, left). Exarchopoulos, meanwhile, chose a sheer Spring ’14 Louis Vuitton stunner spangled with beads and feathers. Tune in Saturday evening as the red-carpet excitement continues with the 20th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Runway to Red Carpet: Glittering Lips and the Couture Treatment

-------

Diane Kruger, in ChanelWhile the red-carpet circuit began with a slow start over the weekend, the premieres and parties kicked into overdrive as the week continued. Thor: The Dark World‘s leading lady, Natalie Portman, was a vision in white at the film’s Berlin premiere on Sunday, walking the red carpet in a strapless Christian Dior haute couture gown with a full skirt accented with a black ribbon around the waist. On Tuesday evening, Diane Kruger also opted for a haute couture number, choosing a black sequined cocktail dress embroidered with florals from Chanel’s Haute Couture Spring ’13 runway at the brand’s Little Black Jacket event in Brazil.

As the premiere circuit continued into the week, Hailee Steinfeld donned a Saint Laurent ensemble straight from the Spring ’14 runway, pairing a white one-shoulder top covered in sequined red lips with tailored black pants at the Hollywood premiere of her film, Ender’s Game. The same evening, Kate Bosworth chose a black Christopher Kane gown accented with crystal flowers at the neckline and waist from the Spring ’14 collection for the New York premiere of her flick Big Sur. And Naomi Watts took to the red carpet at the New York premiere of Diana, in which she plays the title role, in a blue-and-white floor-grazing dress that was ruched at the waist below a keyhole cutout from Michael Kors’ Spring ’14 runway.

Runway to Red Carpet: A Pop Art Ka-Pow! and an Erdem Hat Trick

-------

Tom Hanks and Rita WilsonOne designer won the hearts of red-carpet walkers this week, and that was Erdem Moralioglu. First up was Hailee Steinfeld, who arrived at a photo call for her new film, Ender’s Game, in Berlin on Sunday afternoon in a playful Erdem Resort ’14 frock layered with black lace and white floral appliqués. On Monday, Clémence Poésy donned a black Erdem dress adorned with floral appliqués and ostrich feathers, from his Fall ’13 runway, to the MIPCOM 2013 party in Cannes. And the following evening, Naomi Watts chose a fitted floral number from Erdem for the 2013 Take Home a Nude Benefit Art Auction in New York.

But other designers had a chance to shine in front of the step-and-repeats, too. On Wednesday night, Rita Wilson joined her husband, Tom Hanks, at the London premiere of his new film, Captain Phillips, in a black Fall ’13 Tom Ford dress with a Pop art ka-pow! motif. Nicole Kidman showed some skin in a black Prada halter gown at the Huading Image Awards in Macao, China, on Monday, where she was awarded the statue for Best Global Actress in Motion Pictures. The supersexy dress featured a keyhole cutout on the bodice, and spangly orange flowers that spilled out of the skirt’s side slit. In case anyone was wondering: She’s still got it.
