Novis Fall 2013

Label: Novis, designed by Jordana Warmflash

Need to Know: Yesterday marked Jordana Warmflash’s first-ever New York fashion week presentation. Her Fall ’13 collection was inspired by photographs Richard Avedon took in Paris in the fifties and sixties. The collection had a certain Mad Men quality to it—with gold brocade pleated coats, black flouncy skirts, leopard cigarette pants, and blue velvet party dresses—but sleek structured accents and tailoring gave the retro aesthetic a playful update. When asked about the Novis woman, Warmflash said she’s someone who likes to get dressed up, doesn’t take herself too seriously, and appreciates well-made clothing.

She Says: “These girls all have a classic, playful quality. The collection is about clean lines and tailored looks, but it’s still whimsical at the same time,” said Warmflash. “Construction is also very important to me, and all the dresses are probably more beautiful on the inside than they are on the outside. I choose a different color binding each season. For Fall, we did a pretty light blue-gray.”

Novis Spring 2013

Label: Novis by designer Jordana Warmflash

Need to know: Jordana Warmflash had a springtime wedding to attend, and after searching high and low for a dress that was just right for the occasion, she gave up and decided to make her own instead. But that wasn’t the first time Warmflash found herself hunched over a sewing machine with measuring tape hanging around her neck. The native New Yorker previously worked with Zac Posen and Alice + Olivia, and decided to launch her own label when that bespoke wedding number triggered a wave of compliments and custom requests. Novis (a tribute to Warmflash’s grandmother’s maiden name) debuted with a Fall lineup full of classic yet quirky cocktail frocks and evening gowns featuring vintage-inspired silhouettes done up in luxurious brocades, laces, and tweeds. For her Spring collection, premiering on Style.com, Warmflash introduced separates to the mix (“something I thought wasn’t my strength before,” she told Style.com), like a structured blazer with a tentlike back pleat in a mod floral print, which was paired with matching slim trousers. Other highlights here included a long-sleeved dress with a flattering circle skirt and tiny butterflies dancing on each layer of lightweight chiffon, as well as a tea-length “petal” dress with a built-in bustier.

She says: “I love to reinterpret vintage prints by tweaking the colors, playing around with scale, and altering the line quality to make it modern,” Warmflash told Style.com. “But I am just as inspired by textile trade shows as I am by my racks of vintage finds.”
