Golden Girls: Stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris Take Us Inside the Glamorous Globes

-------

Olivia, Amy, and Zooey

As we’re sure you’re aware, last night, Hollywood’s elite walked the red carpet for the Golden Globes. But it wasn’t just a big evening for the actors and directors who took home gilded statuettes—it’s an important affair for fashion folk, too. Mega stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris were not just on the scene, but also behind the scenes dressing co-host Amy Poehler (who looked svelte in Stella McCartney), Elisabeth Moss (who took home a best actress award while wearing J. Mendel), Olivia Wilde (who was radiant in Gucci Première), Zooey Deschanel (who opted for an elegant Oscar de la Renta gown), Robin Wright (who shimmered in Reem Acra while accepting her best actress honor), Hailee Steinfeld (who partied in Andrew Gn), and more. Here, Welch shares the pair’s Golden Globes diary and gives Style.com a firsthand account of what it’s like to dress leading ladies for one of Hollywood’s most glam-packed events.

Zooey Deschanel's Oscar de la Renta look

Here’s a behind-the-scenes peek at Zooey Deschanel’s Oscar de la Renta look for the Globes.

For Amy’s opening look, we went for Neil Lane vintage gold. Our mantra was, “What would Carol Burnett do?” Sometimes, more is more and it’s always better to have fun! Continue Reading “Golden Girls: Stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris Take Us Inside the Glamorous Globes” »

Runway to Red Carpet: Stars Swathed in Spring, and a Flurry of Dior

-------

Carey MulliganWith the last days of fashion month still fresh in our minds (has it really been over two weeks since we left Paris?), we’re already seeing some of the season’s buzzed-about collections on red-carpet A-listers. The New York Film Festival closed this weekend with a screening of Her, and all three of the flick’s screen sirens stepped out in looks fresh off the Spring ’14 runways. Leading lady Amy Adams wore a figure-hugging Spring ’14 Prabal Gurung lavender sheath with a wide, plunging neckline. Olivia Wilde chose a white blouse and khaki palazzo pants from Michael Kors’ Spring ’14 runway, and Rooney Mara opted for a textured leather top and a black and cream pleated skirt bonded with black and silver foil from Proenza Schouler’s Spring ’14 offering. Last but certainly not least, red-carpet newcomer Lupita Nyong’o impressed in a fresh Spring ’14 Miu Miu frock with a kitschy parrot print at the L.A. premiere of her new film, 12 Years a Slave, on Monday evening.

Dior also made a strong showing on the celebrity circuit this week. Allison Williams, Kate Bosworth, and Carey Mulligan all chose frocks from the Parisian house; the latter donned a sunny yellow cocktail dress with a structured bodice. It was refreshing to see the (currently) brunette bombshell, who has been working with neutral tones in her wardrobe and makeup lately, play it up in a vibrant hue and striking red lip.

Here, more of this week’s red-carpet highlights.

Olivia Wilde Serves One Up

-------

Joe Swanberg and Olivia WildeSometimes you just need to skip the big Manhattan red-carpet to-do and premiere your movie on your own terms. For director Joe Swanberg, that meant debuting his new flick, Drinking Buddies, at the Nitehawk in Williamsburg, Brooklyn—which is, fittingly, a cinema-cum-bar. The movie explores the romantic blunders of the employees of a Chicago craft brewery, who are played by Olivia Wilde, Jake Johnson, Anna Kendrick, and Ron Livingston.

“This film is a love letter to beer, the same way I think Sideways is a love letter to wine,” said Wilde, even though her own relationship with beer hasn’t always been so smooth. During a three-day beer boot camp orchestrated by Swanberg, pre-production, she was splashed in the eye by some boiling hops. Wanting to play it cool, however, Wilde went about three weeks without telling anyone how badly she was hurt: “I was in horrible, horrible pain!”

Beer under the bridge at this point, because working on this film has turned Wilde into a Grade-A craft-beer aficionada. She currently swears by Zombie Dust ale from Three Floyds Brewing Co. And that was all part of the plan, explained Swanberg, who answered questions with a can of Revolution Brewing Oktoberfest lager in hand (from the actual brewery used in the film). Between sips, the director offered, “If this movie encourages anyone to drink better beer, it will be a massive success.”

Ferragamo Rushes In

Ron Howard’s new film Rush—a flick starring Daniel Brühl (above), Alexandra Maria Lara, Olivia Wilde, Joséphine de la Baume, and Chris Hemsworth, about two rival Formula 1 drivers in the seventies—hits theaters on September 13. And Salvatore Ferragamo’s Massimiliano Giornetti reportedly dressed the movie’s leading couple, Brühl and Lara, who play racer Niki Lauda and his wife, Marlene Lauda, respectively. “I created Niki Lauda’s character’s wardrobe for the film with his most distinctive traits in mind: an extremely determined sportsman obsessed with perfection, never leaving anything to chance, whether it be a strategic move or a stylistic detail,” Giornetti said of the costumes. Sounds a bit like the house’s sporty Spring ’14 menswear collection, no?

Big Party, Small World

-------

Invite-only social-networking site ASMALLWORLD is basically Facebook for well-connected frequent fliers. So for the platform’s party celebrating its relaunch as a travel and lifestyle club last weekend, the site and its CEO Sabine Heller flew a slew of jet-setters—such as Dianna Agron, Mamie Gummer, and Olivia Wilde—to party in Marrakech. New York deejay Chelsea Leyland was among the guests, and here she chronicles the Moroccan getaway via personal snaps with pals such as Lily Kwong, Theophilus London, Waris Ahluwalia, Ben Pundole, a couple of camels, and more.

I snapped this upon my arrival. Believe it or not, this was my bed for the weekend. INCREDIBLE!

Waris Ahluwalia and my boy Ben Pundole having what looks like a very important conversation in the swimming pool at the Taj Palace in Marrakech, which is probably one of the most amazing pools I’ve ever seen.

Theophilus London and myself having a little hug. Theo bought this outfit that morning and was pretty proud of it. I think his exact words were, “Doesn’t this look like it could be some Rick Owens shit?” Continue Reading “Big Party, Small World” »
