This Thursday, on the evening of its Fall ’14 show, Prada will fete the latest installment of its Iconoclasts series—a project, launched in 2009, that has seen the likes of Katie Grand, Alex White, Olivier Rizzo, and Carine Roitfeld reimagine Prada boutiques in the fashion capitals. This time around, the house has tapped W magazine’s Edward Enninful to share his vision, and he’s chosen to style the brand’s Via Montenapoleone men’s and women’s boutiques in the image of the Harlem Renaissance. At the women’s shop, Enninful will install a series of black and white mannequins, clad in Spring ’14 and archival Prada looks, and pose them as if they were guests at a swanky Jazz Age era club. (The ambience will be topped off with a glitzy Art Deco bar.) Meanwhile, the men’s store will feature game tables and a blues trio. “The event is meant as a celebration of Miuccia Prada’s incredible work. Hopefully people will leave the event with a smile on their face,” Enninful told Style.com. “It is a very joyful moment, and I hope that people will be inspired by the men’s and women’s collections, the installations in each store, and the culturally inclusive direction of this moment in the Iconoclasts series.” To give us a better sense of what to expect, the editor sent us an inspiration image: Palmer Hayden’s painting We Four in Paris, above.
For AnOther Magazine‘s twenty-fifth issue, Jefferson Hack, the founder of Dazed Publishing Group, has tapped renowned Belgian stylist Olivier Rizzo as the guest editor of the British culture and fashion biannual. Centering on the ideas of travel and transformation, Rizzo brought a rich texture, wit, and sense of performance to his three shoots with photographers Willy Vanderperre (whose images are pictured here) and Alasdair McLellan. “Guest-editing the well of AnOther Magazine was fantastic,” Rizzo told Style.com. “Jefferson, [creative director] David James, and I have a long-standing, close relationship in the magazine, where the mutual respect and support leads to total creative freedom.” For the cover, he styled actress Cate Blanchett in the midst of a decadent night garden, channeling the theatricality of new-wave Berlin. Hailing from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, Rizzo has some pretty serious styling cred: He’s done Prada’s shows since 2006, as well as the runways of Jil Sander and Louis Vuitton, and the campaigns for Raf Simons and Dior. Furthermore, he’s known for working with photographers such as Paolo Roversi, Steven Meisel, Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, Craig McDean, and Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin for publications such as Vogue Italia, W, i-D, Fantastic Man, Love, and Vogue Hommes International. Don’t expect a run-of-the-mill fashion film from Raf Simons, especially when he teams up with longtime collaborators, photographer Willy Vanderperre and stylist Olivier Rizzo. The trio turned out a new video befitting Simons’ pensive Fall ’13 menswear offering, the looks in which recalled the designer’s 1999 Kinetic Youth show. “With this collection, Raf went back to his roots and revised it for the now generation,” offered Vanderperre. “Equally, for the stills and the film, we—Raf, Olivier Rizzo, and myself—went back to our roots together, and shot in Stadspark, in Antwerp, our hometown, where some early work that we did together took place.”
The short features a model posing in the wilderness while donning Simons’ Fall wares. Created with a vintage tint, the film’s frames are broken up with bursts of static—a technique that Vanderperre told us taps into the concept of old versus new technology. “Raf always has a sense of nostalgia for the future,” added the photographer. Theyskens’ Theory’s Spring ads hit the Web today, created by an all-star lineup: photog Willy Vanderperre (Raf Simons’ go-to guy), stylist Olivier Rizzo (who works his magic for Prada and just about everyone else), Theyskens himself (who contributed his own photo of a Belgian seascape), and model of the moment Wylie Hays. And why Wylie? “She is the quintessential Theyskens’ Theory girl,” the designer told us. “I find her an extremely modern beauty and youth.” Expect plenty of other designers to feel the same this Fall ’13 season.
The Man About Town is about to be Man About Galaxy. The new edition of Philip Utz’s menswear biannual Man About Town is The Space Issue, dedicated to the high life in all of its iterations—from the burgeoning space tourism market to French pastry master Pierre Hermé’s recipe for space cake. (Include cannabis at your discretion.)
For the new issue, Utz and creative directors Mathias Augustyniak and Michael Amzalag of M/M (Paris) pitted the homemade against the futuristic, starting with the hand-crafted font M/M (Paris) worked up for use throughout the issue, one that was hand-formed in salt dough, then photographed. “The space theme was chosen because I wanted to break with the retro aesthetic that Man About Town had been championing prior to the Hedi Slimane issue, but also because I felt that it would take the writers, photographers, and stylists out of their comfort zone to produce something less self-referential and more thought-provoking than what most other men’s books have to offer,” Utz says. “It was certainly very rewarding to see everything come together, with such unlikely bedfellows as astrobiologists and stylists, computer programmers and fashion photographers.” The full list of contributors includes fashion world heavies such as Alasdair McLellan, Joe McKenna, Olivier Rizzo, David Sims, and Willy Vanderperre, but also Google vice president Vint Cerf, astronomer Sir Patrick Moore, and Virgin Galactic head of astronaut relations Dave Clark. (“Our approach to Man About Town was very free-spirited,” Augustyniak and Amzalag say of the roster. “We wanted to have fun and placed calls for everyone to join the party.”)
The issue hit stands this past Friday. It comes with a packet of six postcards featuring art from the pages of the magazine, like the David Sims shot, styled by McKenna, at left. “Postcards from the edge,” Utz calls them. Space: Wish you were here!
