Our Favorite Dresses From Spring ’15 Bridal Week

Vera WangSomething old, something new, something Bali, something blue. That was our takeaway from the Spring ’15 bridal collections presented in New York over the last few days. Despite the influx of new labels and big retailers (such as J.Crew and Anthropologie) entering the market in recent years, most women still want a traditional look for their big day, and so there was no shortage of white lace, tulle, beading, and couture-like embellishment on the runways. What has changed is the broader scope of nuptial ceremonies that designers are addressing.

“There are so many different kinds of weddings and so many different types of brides now,” said Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman backstage before her show. “You’ve got classic church weddings, town hall weddings, and destination weddings, but ultimately, the dress should still be beautiful. It should be romantic. It should be ethereal. It should make a bride feel like a princess or a queen for the day.” And so, Marchesa sent out a modern selection of cocktail and tea-length styles in addition to its more familiar confections. Oscar de la Renta also addressed the changing nature of weddings by featuring relatively casual looks, including a cotton eyelet bikini and matching pareo (accessorized with a floral head wreath and lei) that would be ideal for saying “I do” on a beach.

Vera Wang, meanwhile, went unconventional in a different way, debuting her new collection via a short film. No need to be a store buyer or a magazine editor to score a front-row seat. “The opportunity to create a visual and expressive experience of the clothes, as interpreted by my fashion vision, is a whole new way for me to communicate with not only brides, but women everywhere,” Wang said in a statement.

As we’re sure you’re aware, last night, Hollywood’s elite walked the red carpet for the Golden Globes. But it wasn’t just a big evening for the actors and directors who took home gilded statuettes—it’s an important affair for fashion folk, too. Mega stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris were not just on the scene, but also behind the scenes dressing co-host Amy Poehler (who looked svelte in Stella McCartney), Elisabeth Moss (who took home a best actress award while wearing J. Mendel), Olivia Wilde (who was radiant in Gucci Première), Zooey Deschanel (who opted for an elegant Oscar de la Renta gown), Robin Wright (who shimmered in Reem Acra while accepting her best actress honor), Hailee Steinfeld (who partied in Andrew Gn), and more. Galliano Takes the Stage

John GallianoHe’s back! Kind of. After months of rumors, WWD reports that John Galliano is slated to design the costumes for Stephen Fry’s forthcoming London production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Given his flare for theatrics, and the fact that he created onstage wares for the same play back in 1982, we’d say the designer is more than qualified for the job. Galliano is also apparently still in talks with Oscar de la Renta about assuming a more permanent role at the company. “I love John. He is a great talent,” de la Renta said.

Big Changes and a Smaller Fashion Week

Change is a comin’ for Fall ’14. Today IMG announced its plans to revamp the frenetic circus that is New York fashion week via redesigned Lincoln Center venues with smaller audience capacities and bigger backstage spaces. The hope? That the update will reduce the presence of crowds, celebrity stalkers, miscellaneous non-fashion-related showgoers, aspiring street-style stars hoping to get papped, and general riffraff that often turns the delight that is NYFW into a bit of a hassle (to put it lightly) for buyers, journalists, stylists, and other industry professionals. Yesterday The Wall Street Journal reported that it’s going to be decidedly harder to get tickets this season. An IMG representative told the paper that media guests will be cut by 20 percent in an effort to focus on attendees who are “of value to the designer.” (Oscar de la Renta deserves a shout-out here—the designer lead the way by significantly reducing the number of guests at his Spring ’14 outing.) Less “valuable” fashion fans will be able to watch shows online, as IMG plans to live-stream as many runways as possible.

Also part of the revamp is the Hudson Hub—a space geared toward emerging designers. In comparison to the bigger Lincoln Center venues, which will cost about $45,000 a pop, the Hub will be priced at $15,000 per show. That’s a $3K price decrease from The Box, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week’s previous new-talent-focused venue, for which the fee was $18,000. The price dip is hardly competition for Made at Milk Studios, where the show space for lucky rising stars is free, but we guess it’s a start.
