As we’re sure you’re aware, last night, Hollywood’s elite walked the red carpet for the Golden Globes. But it wasn’t just a big evening for the actors and directors who took home gilded statuettes—it’s an important affair for fashion folk, too. Mega stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris were not just on the scene, but also behind the scenes dressing co-host Amy Poehler (who looked svelte in Stella McCartney), Elisabeth Moss (who took home a best actress award while wearing J. Mendel), Olivia Wilde (who was radiant in Gucci Première), Zooey Deschanel (who opted for an elegant Oscar de la Renta gown), Robin Wright (who shimmered in Reem Acra while accepting her best actress honor), Hailee Steinfeld (who partied in Andrew Gn), and more. Here, Welch shares the pair’s Golden Globes diary and gives Style.com a firsthand account of what it’s like to dress leading ladies for one of Hollywood’s most glam-packed events.
Here’s a behind-the-scenes peek at Zooey Deschanel’s Oscar de la Renta look for the Globes.

The beginning! Sketches and swatches from the Stella team.
For Amy’s opening look, we went for Neil Lane vintage gold. Our mantra was, “What would Carol Burnett do?” Sometimes, more is more and it’s always better to have fun! Continue Reading “Golden Girls: Stylists Karla Welch and Kemal Harris Take Us Inside the Glamorous Globes” »
He’s back! Kind of. After months of rumors, WWD reports that John Galliano is slated to design the costumes for Stephen Fry’s forthcoming London production of The Importance of Being Earnest. Given his flare for theatrics, and the fact that he created onstage wares for the same play back in 1982, we’d say the designer is more than qualified for the job. Galliano is also apparently still in talks with Oscar de la Renta about assuming a more permanent role at the company. “I love John. He is a great talent,” de la Renta said.
Footwear designer Sarah Flint may very well be the only 25-year old who can offer this sort of reveal: “at our factory in Vigevano, Italy, they produce Manolo Blahnik, Oscar de la Renta, and Sarah Flint…” Then, she takes a deep breath.
Flint–who launched her eponymous line for Fall ’13 following an education at FIT, an internship at Proenza Schouler, and a technical program at Milan’s Ars Sutoria–is no doubt in good (albeit understandably daunting) company. She wrangled the factory connection through an ex-teacher who once worked as a patternmaker for Blahnik. The old masters certainly rub off on the youngster, too; her shoes are decidedly grown-up and, for the most part, gimmick-free, informed by “the idea of returning to where a design’s basis is the integrity and shape of its materials, rather than the big buckle or the all-over studs.” That focus on form and material is most evident in her charming origami-inspired styles, which feature leather fold-overs along the tips of slippers and peep-toes alike.
Flint also has another big name in her orbit: Heidi Klum. After the designer gifted Klum a pair of booties, the model came back and ordered two more–one in a color not yet in production. “Of course, we made them,” says Flint.
Starting at $545, Sarah Flint is available online at www.sarahflint.com, and at Edon Manor in New York City.
All roads lead to prints for Spring ’14, but the fall season is all about luxury. Our tip for a rich yet modern update? Take a cue from seventeenth-century Europe, where crushed velvet, gold beadwork, shimmering brocades, and moody hues reigned. Wear head-to-toe embellishments for a regal approach à la Marie Antoinette, or go the modern route and pair a luxe jeweled top with your favorite jeans.
