The SAG Nominations Kick-Start Awards Season

-------

This morning, the nominees for the 18th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced, marking the beginning of the 2012 Oscar race (and, more importantly, the red-carpet best-dressed competition). This year’s SAG Awards was ripe with newcomers and bright prints (cue: Hailee Steinfeld in the striped Prada dress that proved to be a game-changer for the teen star) and the awards show pros like Nicole Kidman, January Jones, and a pregnant Natalie Portman (who, of course, went on to win the Oscar for her Black Swan performance). What’s to come next year? We don’t have the answer just yet, but here are some pretty good hints (below). Topping the list is The Help, which leads with four nominations, and The Artist, with two nominations.

There weren’t too many surprises among the nominations, though there were a few notable shut-outs, like Julianne Moore in The Kids Are All Right and Mila Kunis in Black Swan, both of who got Globe nods. And of note for the fashion set is the Best Costume Design nomination for the Milan-based melodrama I Am Love (above), with costumes by Antonella Cannarozzi, that counts Silvia Venturini Fendi among its producers. So, You’re Going To Host The Oscars…

-------

The rumors are true: This year’s Oscar co-hosts are Bright Young Things™ Anne Hathaway and James Franco. (Both, incidentally, looking good in the early running for major awards.) Franco could do worse than the Tom Ford tuxes last year’s co-hosts, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin, donned for the occasion. (He’d do well to bring both his arms, however.) But Hathaway? She’s got a few more options. Over the last two years, Hathaway has emerged as a style star in her own right. The houses of Valentino and Armani are both eager to claim her for their own, though she’s also been known to pal around with Marc Jacobs and, at least in the past, has had a soft spot for Marchesa. So who’ll she wear come March? We’ve rounded up a few of her past hits above, both formal and cocktail; let us know which you like, and who she should pick for the big show.

Bottom row, left to right: In Valentino Haute Couture at the premiere of Love and Other Drugs, 2010; in Marc Jacobs at the Met Costume Institute Gala in 2009.
