Considering the winner receives a cool 250,000 euros and a two-season mentorship from Italian fashion tycoon Renzo Rosso, the ANDAM Fashion Award is one of the most coveted in the biz. And today, the group announced the seven finalists being considered for the 2013 prize. This year, AMI designer Alexandre Mattiussi, the ever-quirky Olympia Le-Tan (left), Yang Li, Pedro Lourenço, Maison Rabih Kayrouz, Masha Ma, and conceptual couturier Iris van Herpen will be competing for the honor. The winner, whose spoils will also include his or her Spring ’14 collection being sold in Canadian department store Hudson’s Bay Company, 10,000 euros worth of Swarovski Crystals to use on his or her Spring ’14 collection, and support from Fashion GPS over the next two years, will be chosen by a panel of industry insiders—including Colette’s Sarah Andelman, Humberto Leon, Paris Vogue‘s Emmanuelle Alt, and Style.com‘s executive editor Nicole Phelps—in Paris on July 4. Previous winners include Anthony Vaccarello, Giles Deacon, Richard Nicoll, and Gareth Pugh.
Pedro Lourenço’s pre-fall collection was inspired by the Patagonian desert, but I took one look at this printed shift ($515, www.brownsfashion.com) and saw a different landscape. To show off his Resort collection and new collaboration with Melissa shoes, designer Pedro Lourenço enlisted model Maria Bradley and director Philip Andelman to create a short film. Here, watch Bradley float around weightlessly in Lourenço’s urban, sporty looks and the Melissa No. 1 shoe he designed for the Brazilian shoe label. In terms of collaborations, Brazilian shoe company Melissa has roped in some of the industry’s finest, from Vivienne Westwood to Gareth Pugh. Now, add one more name to the list: fellow Brazilian designer Pedro Lourenço. Of the design behind the two styles he created, Lourenço tells Style.com, “I like women in heels, but I like it when they feel light and seductive without being aggressive.” He adds, “I wanted to see a fusion of skin and plastic—I like the juicy look of plastic in combination with nude skin.” Here, Style.com has an exclusive first look at the shoes, the Melissa No. 1 + Pedro Lourenço heel ($175, in stores in November) and the Melissa Divine + Pedro Lourenço ballet flat ($90, in stores in July), which is available in several different colors including red, black, and blue. “I went to Atacama and Patagonia and fell in love with the atmosphere that the scenario and silence bring,” designer Pedro Lourenço tells Style.com of the locales that inspired the eye-catching prints in his recent pre-fall collection. “The colors, textures, and emptiness are amazing.”
Lourenço artfully transferred the natural beauty of Patagonia into something more urban, using the digital prints on sleeveless shells and dresses. “I wanted to create windows on the woman’s body so that the landscape could be seen through them,” he says of the process.
When we first laid eyes on Lourenço’s tropical Resort prints by artist Lelli de Orleans e Bragança back in June, we fell in love, as have his clients—the collection is selling quite well at Barneys. It’s safe to assume this round will be no different when it hits stores. As for what’s ahead, he revealed, “The prints for the Fall collection will be done in collaboration with a contemporary artist based in New York. They will be less figurative, more abstract.” Until then, stay tuned.
