Mert and Marcus Talk Playboy, Lady Gaga, And Why They’re Better Together

Lady Gaga for the latest Versace campaign, but they were also responsible for Givenchy’s Spring ’14 ads-seen-round-the-world featuring Erykah Badu. What’s really got everyone buzzing, though, is the London-based pair’s unconventional Playboy cover and editorial. The spread appears in the iconic girly mag’s sixtieth anniversary issue (on newsstands now), and stars none other than the sharpshooters’ good pal Kate Moss. Below, Style.com speaks to the enduring image-makers about nudity in fashion, late-night chats with Donatella Versace, the philosophy behind their Playboy snaps, and why they’d never go solo like Beyoncé. And because our bandwidth wouldn’t possibly permit us to ramble on about all the unforgettable photos Mert and Marcus have produced for Pop, French Vogue, the Pirelli Calendar, Interview, and more, we asked the duo to send us some of their favorite work. You two are good friends with Kate Moss, and have been working with her for years. How was the Playboy shoot different from your previous collaborations with her? Did you have any hesitations?
Mert Alas: Oh, my God, it was a no-brainer. When Kate asked us to shoot her for Playboy‘s sixtieth anniversary issue, you know, we had to do it.

Marcus Piggott: We didn’t have any hesitations. We were all in from the start. We’ve done a lot of things with Kate—a lot of role-playing, a lot of fashion pictures, a lot of personal pictures—and when we started this project, we asked ourselves what not to do. We wanted it to be really Kate. It wasn’t about the hair or the makeup, it wasn’t about styling or fashion. It wasn’t about all the frivolous tools of our industry. It was about her—her lips, her charisma, her body, her skin, her eyes…

What makes this shoot stand out from a typical Playboy spread?
MP: She’s dressed more than the girls in most Playboy editorials. It was a bit of a striptease. We wanted to leave a little bit to the imagination, and we wanted the reader to get excited imagining what’s underneath. But there are a lot of crazy pictures that you haven’t seen…

Oh, really? What kind of pictures?
MA: They were just fun pictures—a bit ruder and crazier than what’s in the magazine. Someday they’ll come out! Marcus and Kate and I were laughing, and we told her that we’ll get them out there when she’s 60.

You mentioned that you didn’t want this to be like a fashion shoot, but you can find naked women in pretty much any high-end fashion magazine. Do you think there’s too much nudity in fashion? We are selling clothes, after all.
MA: First of all, we must appreciate what a fashion magazine is. I don’t like calling them fashion magazines. I just call them magazines. In the old days, you’d see a great article, a great fashion picture, and a great nude all under one hat. So, no, I don’t mind seeing a naked girl in a fashion magazine as long as the photograph represents something beyond meat, flesh, and sex. If it’s about an object, or creating a beautiful print, or there’s a message in it, or it inspires you, or makes you happy or angry, then it has substance. 20. Rihanna and River Island Take London Fashion Week
Rihanna stirred up some anarchy in the U.K. when she and Adam Selman debuted their risqué River Island collection at London fashion week in February. Style.com had a front-row-seat to the star’s design debut.

19. Maison Kitsuné’s Retro Pop Experience
Gildas Loaëc and Masaya Kuroki, the talents behind cult fashion brand-cum-record label Maison Kitsuné, were Pitti W’s Fall ’13 guest designers. And in keeping with their quirky, multidisciplinary roots, the pair put on a riotous musical fashion presentation. Style.com was on the scene to document their sixties-themed extravaganza.

Last July, for the second time in history, Dior staged a show in Moscow’s Red Square. As you can imagine, the festivities, which were hosted inside a purpose-built mirrored pavilion, were brimming with glitz and glamour—albeit of Dior’s sleek and tasteful variety. Surprise! Kate Moss to Bare All for Playboy

Kate Moss in Vanity FairJune’s widespread rumors are true—Kate Moss will cover the 60th anniversary issue of Playboy, and word on the street is that Mert & Marcus have already shot the feature. “It’s natural for us,” Hugh Hefner told the Los Angeles Times. “She’s a worldwide celebrity and iconic and crosses the boundaries from sexual imagery to upscale modeling.” Indeed, after seeing Moss’ sultry Spring Versace ads, that pinup-worthy spread in last November’s Vanity Fair (left,) and that saucy Spring Love cover of her swooning in a bathtub, we don’t think Playboy is too big of a stretch.

Playboy‘s Artist Pals Are Rethinking Sexy—But Is It Porn Or Art?

Aaron Young for PlayboyThe famous old dodge—”I read Playboy for the articles”—is getting a contemporary update. Thanks to a revamp and a prominent new hire, you can now look at Playboy for the art.

The magazine recently signed curator Neville Wakefield as its special projects director, and he’s been working on some highbrow—albeit playful—extensions. His first official venture involved commissioning three artists (Aaron Young—left, Malerie Marder, and Alex Israel) to create work presenting the 2013 Playmate of the Year, Raquel Pomplun, within the context of art. “I think it’s a reimagining of what Playboy can be,” said Wakefield, who’s working on another art-centric supplement for November.

The effort got us wondering: When is a picture art, and when is it erotica? “I think it has a lot to do with context,” offered Wakefield. “Porn has an efficacy when it comes to arousal, but [these works] are meditations on a person and a condition, so in that respect, they are art.” We put the question to the artists themselves; their original works debut exclusively here.

Playmates are “always working with their bodies,” said Aaron Young, so he covered a nude Pomplun neck-to-toe in paint and had her press her body (in one case, dragging her) across canvas for a series inspired by Yves Klein’s press paintings. “This definitely has rich and deep connections to art history,” he said. “I mean, there have been so many different kinds of nudes, why not work with the most popular nude in America?

The bottom line: Is it erotica? “If somebody has a good enough imagination, I’m sure it probably could be. But I think that expressing an idea through any medium can be sexy. Meet the New iPlayboys, Alexander Wang Gets Gritty, And More…

André Balazs, Waris Ahluwalia, Jeremy Scott, and Simon Doonan are now working for Playboy. The guys have been asked to pick out their favorite moment from the archives, going all the way back to the magazine’s launch in 1953, for the new iPlayboy app. Of his X-rated pick—the May 1959 cover, Ahluwalia says, “I believe in cleanliness… in groups.” [Nowness]

Last week, Style.com debuted Alexander Wang’s new T campaign, starring Santigold and Spank Rock. Tonight, Wang will light up Manhattan as he unveils his Fall ready-to-wear promotional video, featuring Raquel Zimmermann and sounds by SebastiAn and M.I.A., projected from trucks onto the sides of buildings from the Upper West Side to the Meatpacking District. The screening of the “gritty and raw” clip will continue Thursday and Friday. [WWD]

Watch out, Leslie Fremar and Fruit of the Loom. Hanes—a name synonymous with underwear and white cotton T-shirts— is getting into the fashion game, too. The company is set to launch a line of graphic tees in a wide range of styles and colors. [WSJ]
