Fuzzy Fire: Prince Charles to Set His Sweaters Aflame

The Prince Of Wales And The Duchess Of Cornwall Visit Canada - Day 3Prince Charles wants you to buy more wool—and he’s lighting a fire to get that point across. The Daily Mail reports that the royal wool enthusiast will set flame to piles of wool clothing, rugs, and duvets to demonstrate that the material is a natural flame retardant. Apparently, he hopes that this will somehow revive interest in the British wool industry, which is in sharp decline. Charles attests that synthetic materials are not only cheap and harmful to the environment, but they burn quickly and are very dangerous in house fires. Wool, on the other hand, smolders and promptly burns out. The Fire Brigade will be on hand, but they’re apparently not concerned by the stunt. Charles’ sweaters, on the other hand, are unraveling.

A New History: Jason Basmajian Talks Gieves & Hawkes

Gieves & Hawkes—the centuries-old British tailor that holds three royal warrants and owns a prestigious “corner office” at No. 1 Savile Row—is getting a facelift. In January, the brand hired Boston-born Jason Basmajian to take the creative helm. Basmajian’s new role will require him to carry on the tradition of dressing Prince Charles and his kin (baby George can’t be too far away from his first suit, can he?), as well as military, political, and regal grandees, which, over the years, have included Winston Churchill, J.P. Morgan, David Niven, and Laurence Olivier. Basmajian’s mission? To dust off the formidable patina of the brand and turn it into gold dust—English-style. Here, Basmajian talks to Style.com about preserving Gieves & Hawkes’ storied past (so storied, in fact, that the brand employs a full-time archivist to this day), while pushing it into the twenty-first century.

You are American-born and developed your design chops in New York, Paris, and Milan with Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Brioni, and so on. What can you bring to such a traditional British brand?
Funnily enough, that is why I think I was chosen—because I brought an international style perspective to the table. Gieves & Hawkes comes out of a military/equestrian background, which is the anchor of Savile Row. But we also have a loyal clientele in Asia and America where that military and formal tradition isn’t as richly stepped. It weighs heavily on a brand, how to carry that tradition through, but I think my role is to celebrate the brand and move it forward to what today’s man wants, which is a lot of personality and not just body cover. Sarah Burton, OBE

Keeping the Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding gown hidden from London’s notoriously crafty paparazzi is deserving of accolades in and of itself. But today at Buckingham Palace, Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton was awarded an OBE for her contributions to British fashion. The honor, which stands for Order of the British Empire, has, in the past, been bestowed upon such fashion forces as Professor Louise Wilson of Central Saint Martins (who actually taught Burton) and Stephen Jones, among others.

After Prince Charles presented Burton with her award, The Telegraph asked the designer—who is currently pregnant with twins herself—if she would be making maternity clothes for Kate Middleton. Burton reportedly laughed and said, “I hope I will be.” To be honest, though, we’re more excited to see what she’ll show for McQueen’s upcoming pre-fall collection.

More Details Emerge On London’s Menswear Week

After cramming a city’s worth of menswear offerings into a single MAN Day for the last few seasons, London is planning to give its standout men’s offerings a bit more room to breathe. The first men’s-only London fashion collections (technically three days, rather than a few weeks) will take place June 15 to 17, with opening programs including a launch event hosted by Prince Charles. In addition to the young London designers who have been showing on MAN DAY—like J.W. Anderson, James Long, Topman, Lou Dalton, and Christopher Shannon—the new opportunity has lured several U.K. brands back to their home turf, including Pringle of Scotland and Nicole Farhi, who have been showing in Milan, and Dunhill. E. Tautz, Hardy Amies, and Richard James will show ready-to-wear collections on Savile Row, and Richard Nicoll (pictured) will debut a menswear collection. London Fashion Week Is Off To A Royal Start

Nothing like a royal benediction to kick off fashion week, and last night, that’s exactly what London got. At the lawn of Clarence House (Prince Charles’ London pad), Mayor Boris Johnson, Livia Firth (the eco-minded Mrs. Colin), Laura Bailey and a smattering of ladies, lords and baronets attended an eco-sustainable fashion show, presented as part of the Prince’s START festival. (For those not in the know, the old guy is rather a hippie where the environment is concerned.) Appropriate pieces from Stella McCartney, Vivienne Westwood and Emma Watson’s collection for People Tree hit the catwalk, with Erin O’Connor leading the way. The garments were made of recycled fabrics, buttons, and military-issue shirts. (Scratch that, the Prince’s people are calling it “upcycled” rather than “recycled”—upcycled is “the more fashionable cousin.”) The whole thing charmingly embodied England’s old post-war credo of “make do and mend.”

Speaking of making do, who couldn’t make do with a vending machine that sells couture instead of M&M’s?  LOVE‘s Katie Grand and Selfridges got together to create such a vending machine, which will be housed for the duration of LFW in the lobby of the swankiest hotel in London, St Martin’s Lane. (Appropriate, considering it’s the temporary home to tons of visiting editors, models, photogs, buyers, and fashion clients.) Grand ran riot through Selfridges and cherry-picked her favorite items for the 32-slot LOVE Machine (below). It dispenses a Stella McCartney Falabella bag (left), an Alexander Wang leather and sequin dress, a one-off pair of Rick Owens trainers customized by Chrome Hearts, exclusive Dior nail polishes, Diptyque Mimosa candles exclusive to Selfridges in their signature yellow, and for the gents, Falke’s new “secret socks” for men. A word to the wise, though: Know your size. It’s tough to return an item to a vending machine.
