In The Bag With Proenza Schouler

“A million different colors, suede, leather, rubberized python, crocodile special-order,” rattled off Proenza Schouler’s Jack McCollough Thursday night at Il Buco, where he and partner Lazaro Hernandez hosted a dinner to celebrate their new handbag line. It was inevitable really, McCollough noted. “Whenever we’re doing our drawings for collections, the girls always have bags on their hands, shoes on their feet, sunglasses on their faces,” he explained. “It kind of completes the look.” Nearby, Simon Doonan (Barneys played co-host) indulged in some horn-tooting before dinner was served. “It’s utterly luscious and utterly exquisite,” he cooed, stroking a white python clutch from the PS1 line. “That whole thing of those girls on Gossip Girl carrying gigunda purses, that’s very déjà,” Doonan sniffed, barely noticing Proenza-ites Chloë Sevigny and Mary-Kate Olsen filtering past. “All that hellish rummaging, and there are, like, terrorists living in them.”

More About Last Night: Jack McCollough Thrilled About Shout-Out To The Gays

Despite the outdoor block party on Petrosino Square being closed down by the cops, election-night celebrations raged on south of Houston. Café Select was a veritable buzz, as was The Box, which hosted an after-party. “There was only going to be an after-party if it went our way,” said Box co-owner Simon Hammerstein. Proenza Schouler’s Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough were there, raising a glass. “I’m very, very, very excited,” said McCollough. “A shout-out to the gays?” he added. “I mean, never, ever, ever in an election or an acceptance speech has a President-elect said something like that. To hear that, for me personally, is so fantastic. Barack Obama is exceptional. Exceptional!” Revelers jammed the balcony area. “Tonight changed history,” said performance artist Paul D. Miller, a.k.a. DJ Spooky. “We now have a multicultural narrative that is about the rebuilding of a shattered dream.”

blasblog: proenza schouler’s water works

Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez had a lot to celebrate last night at the Beatrice Inn, where they hosted their own official after-party (Kirsten Dunst and Kelly Klein were among their well-wishers). Not only did they just put on another much talked-about collection, but as Hernandez revealed, they were also congratulating themselves on surviving their own Chinatown flood just days before. The Proenza Schouler studio occupies the entire sixth floor of an old building on Walker Street. The seventh is the top floor and gets lots of natural light, so when the occupants moved out, the duo decided to move up there to work on the Spring collection. “While we were fitting Natasha Poly two days ago, I felt a little drop of something wet hit my face,” Hernandez remembers. “And then, Wham! Just like that, the skylight fell in with 1,000 gallons of water or something.” The building’s floors are warped, so the water pooled in a corner, and since nearly everything was on racks at the time, it wasn’t like the entire collection was severely damaged. But the designers had to reschedule the rest of the day’s fittings to the day before the show, move everything, sedate themselves, and devise a new alterations system. “I knew we wouldn’t be sleeping in for weeks,” McCollough said. “But that whole water tower thing didn’t help.”
