Awards season is officially upon us. The Golden Globes are set for Sunday, January 13 (check back for our coverage), and today the nominees for the BAFTAs were announced. Lincoln, Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, and Les Misérables racked up the most nods, and red-carpet favorites like Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Marion Cotillard, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Helen Mirren (who just received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame), as well as Javier Bardem, Ben Affleck, Hugh Jackman, and Daniel Day-Lewis, are all up for honors. We’ll have to wait until the ceremony, which will be held at London’s Royal Opera House on February 10, to see who wins and, of course, what everyone wears. It’s been a slow month party-wise in New York City. Maybe that’s why a few members of the social set pulled out floor-grazing frocks for the Cinema Society’s Inglourious Basterds screening and Standard Hotel after-party last night (click here for a slideshow). We say it’s never a good idea to outshine the guests of honor, and even at the film’s L.A. premiere last week, Diane Kruger and Angelina Jolie went cocktail length or shorter. Which is why we think Agyness Deyn‘s tee and high-waisted black leather skirt combo strikes just the right note. The fact that it’s a Rocky Horror Picture Show T-shirt and the movie in question was Quentin Tarantino’s exceedingly bloody revenge tale proves the platinum-blonde pixie has style and a sense of humor. What do you think?
Diane Kruger has been working the red carpet for a solid three months in support of Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. Angelina Jolie, whose husband, Brad Pitt, plays the lead, shows up for only the big-ticket events—Cannes in May and L.A. yesterday at the film’s West Coast premiere. Their choices last night were another interesting study in contrasts. Kruger’s spangled Atelier Versace, with its bold shoulders and plunging keyhole back, was the dress of a fashion adventuress; you don’t have to study her press junket pics to see that she obviously loves clothes. Jolie’s strapless black leather Michael Kors number, on the other hand, was decidedly more minimalist. Not in the least understated, but the choice of a woman who’s always depended more on her pillow lips and other pneumatic gifts than on fashion for red-carpet impact. Whose dress do you like better?
